As a licensed cosmetologist, I will say that no one really teaches these crucial steps in school. I have naturally thin curly hair and have been doing half of the steps you do. With your knowledge in curly hair, I think you should have triple the subscribers. Add that to your channel. This was phenomenal. I seriously can’t wait to do my hair curly again! Thank you so much and I will share your channel. I now have a Dyson that works great but that diffuser looks awesome. I will also add that the reason why we don’t see this is because everyone is using the straightener. So this is definitely a good way to keep it healthy and natural looking. Good job!!

What a compliment! Im flattered :) Thank you and I agree, a lot of what I learned was out on the field working with curls rather than being taught by cosmo school. I will say though, having curly hair myself did help me understand curly/wavy hair in a special way. Also, I have a Dyson now and let me tell you... never going back! lol

I agree. School does nothing to teach the correct techniques and proper cuts for waves to coil hair types. I have natural med to tight spiral curls and was everyone’s Guinea pig model in school. We’d have guest teachers come in and they always wanted a go at me. No way, they still have this concept that they need to “tame” the curls and their only solution to that is to layer and thin the crap out of it and total go against the curl pattern and remove so much weight they wind up leaving it a thin, wispy mess, that they then try to cover up the poor cut by blowing it out straight. I’ve tried everything under the sun and now in my 50’s I’ve finally conquered the perfect routine with air drying and minimal heat applied. I get compliments daily and it’s the first thing people recognize about and remember me by (it’s like a living logo lol) Also if y’all are using anything other than a microfiber towel or old t-shirt y’all are creating breakage and frizz. Just like this stylist recommends.

Went in for a cut and color and made sure to tell her my hair was wavy/curly, but I was coming in on third day hair. She painfully raked her fingers through all my knots and said "Hmm, I don't think so. I think it's just knotted and you aren't using any heat tools." When she gave me a blowout and it came out straight, she was quick to tell me that my hair was actually straight and I just needed to take better care of it. Smh.

@@litleangelbrook So painful to read 🫠 My experience is that every hairdresser told me that my hair is super dry and damaged when the frizzy poofy look was actually only because I used to always brush and blow dry it when I didn’t know that my hair was very wavy and I needed to style it differently. One time a hair dresser even said it needs to be cut a lot (and I believed him 🥲) because he thought it looked like that due to extreme damage. I’m still a tiny bit mad because he has curly hair himself and didn’t realize my waves at all in 10 years of going to him. My mom and I had to tell him that our hair is and always has been wavy after finding out everything thanks to the internet.

Last time I got my hair cut, I asked the stylist to style my hair curly. The stylist looked at me like I was from another planet and said, "In the salon, we blow dry for volume, not waves." I'm SO glad this popped up on my feed! This is exactly how my hair looks pre-wash and post-styling. I've ALWAYS thought that I had straight hair. Being Asian, without any access to biological family members, it's never been something that I thought of until this year. I remember I've always hated brushing my hair because it went poofy and I wasn't sure what was wrong since it wasn't obviously curly. Even after I discovered I had wavy hair, I kept doubting myself, even when I saw other Wavies on socials since theirs always seemed to be more obviously wavy without any product. Whereas mine could look pretty straight. But seeing the before and after pictures on this really helped me realize that I really DO have wavy hair. Thank you so much!!

This was great. I’ve had straight hair my entire life and have worn it short for 25 years. When Covid hit I decided to grow it out and to my shock it was wavy (almost exactly like the girl in this video). I think it was probably hormone change when I started menopause (1st cousins have wavy hair too). I’ve been at a complete loss. From finding out my curl number to shampoo and conditioner (I’ve never had to use conditioner before), then what product do I put in my hair at what stage and how to refresh it the next day. I’m such a newbie at this. I think I’ll have to find a new salon that has staff that specialize in curly hair. All these straight hair girls around me, no one can help. I’m going to try your method tomorrow and pray for success. Update: Yes! It worked. I used products I have currently and first added the foam then curl cream while I was still standing in the tub. Squeezed it in like you shown, used my microfiber turban to squeeze out the excess and then wrapped my hair up in it. Took it off about 30 minutes later and had those wonderful curl clumps. Then let air dry. Thank you! You’ve got yourself a new subscriber. 😁

Haidresser here since the mid 80's Been doing similar method since the early 90's. I find it works and looks better if you don't spend so much time perfecting the underneath layers with head upside down. Leave that area damp and flip head back right side up. If you want volume on top just tilt head from side to side or lean back on chair. This way you can see exactly how the outer layers are behaving and you can gently adjust and perfect each tendril.

  • @kyrieeleison2793

    @kyrieeleison2793

Yes, this is what I learned from styling my hair as well. Upside down drying make my curls/waves in the front messy, whereas with the side-to-side and leaning-back methods I can pay closer attention to the top layer of curls all around (which are also the most damaged/frizzy from being exposed to the sun all day). That's IF I'm drying it with heat. Honestly, my hair always looks better when I just let it air dry, then give the roots a bit of a lift with my fingers, but my hair is much thicker and more plentiful than this person's hair, so that probably makes it easier to get volume.

I'm just starting my curly hair journey, I've been brushing and blow drying my hair straight for as long as I can remember, so it never even occured to me that my hair might be curly or wavy. My hair is down to my butt, and relatively fine, so the longer layers are weighed down, and its been a bit of a fight, but hopefully I can give my my hair the love and care it needs to see some of my natural texture!

I have been trying the CGM for two and a half years as a 2a-2c. Your video really helped remind me of what I quit doing and to go back and try it again. I totally respect the whole Black hair care industry and all the products and techniques that have been developed over the years and thank all of you for the wisdom you so freely share with us Caucasian wavys and curlies who never knew what to do to enhance our textures. I was adding some “ethnic” products to my routine only semi-successfully before finding the CGM. I still struggle to get a look on wash day that I would want to wear in public and end up looking best on day 2 when my curls turn more to waves and the frizz is brushed into my waves. Yes, I do brush! My hair does not tangle. It has never been straightened, permed, dyed, teased, or anything and is silky smooth even in its frizzy waves and spirals. Your tips today reminded me of things I can do to combat frizz and I can’t wait to try and see if I can make it work. Thank you so much for this wavy video!

i think you'll get conflicting information by many hair stylists. it depends on who you ask. if you close the cuticle it will seal everything in there. which is why i think Olaplex #3 does the grunt of the work versus all the aftercare products. Bc you want to open the cuticle, use it, and seal it. then use low heat tools to style so you don't damage it, fade your color, etc. which is what mine advises me. But I do like everything else aside from that mentioned in this

I am a natural redhead in my 40s, and since I was a toddler I had one wavy section in the back of my hair while the rest was straight. When I hit my 20s that section became a tight wave/coil, then in my mid 30s to now the wave started slowly moving towards the front of my hair. I was gettin a relaxer in the back, since the front section wouldn’t even hold any curl. I decided to forgo the relaxer after 20 years and attempt to get the wave to hold in the front while keeping the back from being a frizzy mess. This feels like a good combo of techniques I’ve seen previously for my “complicated” hair and I can’t wait to try it!

I need another curly stylist in my life. I stopped straightening my hair during COVID and the stylist I used before doesn’t do curly well. When she gets ahold of my hair I turn out really poofy with not much definition. She uses a diffuser but I think she’s used to doing it for people with less full hair. Part of my issue is I have so many different curl patterns I have some full ringlets about the size of a finger and some waves. My underneath hair on my neck gets pinky sized ringlets. Sometimes it seems like it depends on the day what they want to do. Makes me remember why I started flat ironing in the first place.

I know it’s time consuming, but your layers on top might just need more time with curly friendly products, sleeping in a silk bonnet, using a cotton t-shirt after your shower, etc…..and finger coiling before diffusing. Just a thought……it’s all such a journey!!

I’ve begun trying to get my hair healthy and to love it in its natural state, and my goal is to have long healthy hair. My hair is curly and has I think 3 different patterns to it. My crown area is a more wavy, my mid and underside is more curly loose 1inch curls , and I have a cross section in the back from one ear to the nape of my neck that’s tighter and more like half inch ringlet curls. I don’t claim to know too much on curl, and it’s been very difficult for me to know exactly how to care for it. My hair is pretty fine, but I have a LOT of it. Like 1/4 of my head is still a 1” ponytail. Your videos have helped me so much in learning how to keep my hair healthy and my curls to be defined and less frizzy and I’m so so thankful I came across your channel. My mom has had pretty straight hair so I’ve not had anyone really to teach me how to work with my curls, and most stylists I’ve come across in salons just don’t seem to know how to work with it either lol. Thank you so much

I've been on and off with the curly girl routine for about a year and a half now. One product line does seem a lot simpler. I tried products not for curly/waves, just had a really good protein, and that was just the shampoo. I found my conditioner wasn't hydrating enough, so I switched to f.o.b. products. I loved the results, but was still frizzy. What blows my mind about your video is how much water I need cause fine hair is apparently supposed to stray from too much water, and others say stay away from wet brush, it straightens you out. I find that wet brush is the only thing that gets rid of my tangles with no frustration, both dry and wet. So thank you for clearing the wet brush myth up because it only gets rid of tangles, and it obviously isn't hard to style your waves after. The other thing is thanks for the wella brand drop cause I'm going to try them after f.o.b. leaves target. No guessing with their products, and that is what I need. Simple. Thank you.

I’ve learned so much and I’m so excited for my curly hair journey

30 some years ago I styled my hair like this, my cousins told me "you don't have naturally curly hair, it's how you styled it to make it wavy!" Also, my hair only stays like this for the day, and the minute I sleep on it, it's frizzy. I sleep with a sulk pillow and even wear my hair up some nights

I like to say that my hair has an identity problem. It is very curly in the back, curly with some wavy peices on the sides then slick straight up front. I have tried everything. Curly girl method, creams, hair spray, even a curling iron then twisting and pinning. I have tried special shampoos and scrunching serums, nothing has worked. Is there anything I could do to make the front part of my hair look like the rest of my head? I will say that as a child I had big chunky curls and my mom wanted me to have spiral curls so in the early 90's I had perms (against my wishes). My hair has been frizzy and wavy for years now at the age of 38 my hair is ....well, as I described earlier.

I have the same issue - one thing that's helped is getting it layered, as the shorter my hair is, the curlier it gets. Back in high school my hair was long enough that you could only really tell it could be curly were the wispy bits around my forehead that never grow out. Layers have also stopped my ponytail looking a disaster (curling at the under part while almost straight on the top!)

Such a helpful and informative video! I have similar texture to your model. One question: how do you transition from styling upside down to upright? When I’ve tried upside down styling all the hair sticks to the back of my head and doesn’t fall nicely at all.

I think you need to grow it out. In the mean time, maybe you can section your hair when you style instead so that you can style the hair in the back properly?

@@humanhoodie1554 my hair is already very long. But sectioning is a good thought!

Beautiful results! I'm a naturally curly girl, and I will definitely try your method! I have straightened my hair a lot with a straigtening iron, and when I want to wear it curly, it seems that it has lost its curl pattern memory. So I've been doing robe curls and love the way it works. However, the curls don't look nearly as hydrated and juicy as what you have demonstrated in your video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

I would love to have you wash my hair! I learned so much from your video. I had straight hair when I was young, but now with gray hair, I have a hot mess of frizz no matter what. I always air dry my hair, sometimes use hot rollers, doesn't matter. What works best for wavy gray hair?

What I find best with wavy gray hair is lots of moisture and diffusing. Also if you want to be a little fancy I'd invest in a hooded dryer, that helps dry your waves quickly without frizz.
