How NOT To Hike!! Hiking During A HEATWAVE With A Heavy Pack!

South Downs Way - Day 1
Starting out with optimism and overconfidence, it’s not long before the weight of my pack begins to hinder my performance. The miles go on, the pain progresses. We eventually reach camp and revise the situation.

I applaud the fact that you posted this. I talked myself and my family into going down into a canyon that had two miles of stairs to a bridge over the river near the bottom.Tallulla gorge in north Ga here in the states. Trip down wasn’t that bad. Trip back up was a sadomasochistic nightmare. I was literally crawling hands and knees back up the last part up. Worse my fourteen year old niece had to carry my son while my ex berated my intelligence and manhood. Couldn’t move for two days. It’s easy to over estimate our abilities. In survival situations we believe we will rise to the occasion. When what happens is we revert to the last level of training we attained too. A few points, when you stop, stretch. Especially your legs and lower back. Take a lot of zinc and magnesium, helps with the craps, and on a long trek over open trail like that use a game cart of some. It gets the weight off your body and feet. We learn more from our mistakes than our success. Be safe bro.

I laugh about it now myself. I have been thinking about going back for round two now that I’m divorced for some redemption. Without the kids tho. That way when the EMT’s come get me it’s just me. My old sensi had a sign over the door of his dojo. Beware of the ego, all who enter here. Needed that sign at the head of those stairs at Tallullah Gorge

Good on you for posting this up. Seems like you’ve taken a lot from the experience. That is quite an achievement to date, 30kg is a heavy bag, especially with no preparation for the walk, so you did great to complete where you’ve got to so far. You make great content, it’s authentic and honest, and that’s what I love about it.

Myself and my kids enjoyed this video. Don't feel disappointed, feel proud. The long distance you walked with that heavy pack is an achievement in its own right especially for your 1st attempt. We often learn more from setbacks than success so the invaluable lessons learnt this day will make you stronger & better in the long run. With the general positive attitude displayed in your videos, you will doubtless nail this challenge 100%. Thanks for sharing and always keeping it real.

I've done all of Scotland's great trails and Wainwright's coast to coast. That first day on your first trail is an absolute killer. You quickly realise you've brought way more shite than you'll ever need. Takes a day or so to get used to the pack on your back then you'll be grand. Get yourself some kendal mint cake and keep it handy for if your flagging. The sugar will do you good. Keep it up man better to extend it a couple days than give up 👍

Good going bud, you were walking right through my neighbourhood , I've stealth camped at Winchester hill many times over the year's, and the south downs is brilliant this time of year. Water can be problem mind you. When you stop, have a proper break, get ya boots off and pamper your feet for a bit, 30 mins in the morning, an hour for lunch and 30 in in the afternoon, yep two hours over the day and it makes all the difference bud. Pasta , good carbs for the next day mate. 30 Kg is quite heavy for that stomp, and good to hear that you knew that you had bitten off more that you could chew. Nothing wrong with knowing your limits, and hay the path will be there waiting for you next time. Lessons to take form this one ! Weight of pack, rest, perpetration!. I'm sure your get it sorted, and bite size legs may be the way you need to get your long distance legs trained up. Good Video mate Love the honesty and the openness. Big Thumbs up Bud.,👍 Regards Moose

That's some great stuff! Looks like brutal heat and all that weight - what a struggle. I'm glad you posted it because there are so many vlogs out there where the walkers just aced it and that doesn't sound like real life to me. I'm doubting that I could do it but I have my kit - about 9kg - and the route is so well connected that if it all goes south, there's plenty of places to bail out. Fair play for giving it a good go and a few lessons learnt and you'll do better next time or at least you will have stuck a few memories in the banks to look back upon.

I had the opportunity to do this trail 3 years ago. Like you’ve I’ve never done long distance hikes. I turned the opportunity down as I knew I couldn’t walk 20,25 miles a day with a pack on my back. I admire you for giving it a shot. I’m local to the area & those hills are no mean feat! If you were to try it again I think you gotta get your pack weight right down to under half what you carried. I’m no expert but it looked a lot to me & weather being hot didn’t help. Best of luck if you attempt it again

Fair play for giving it a go and I 100% applaud your honesty in making and uploading this video but believe me mate you didn't fail in any way at all! I'm about 1/3rd around the 630 mile SW Coast Path right now and the best advice I can give is to reduce your pack weight by a lot! My pack weight including food and water for 2 days is around 12kg but its usually lighter than that. Even if you got your kit down to 15kg your body will thank you for it. As for fitness you'll find that yes you'll be sore at the end of the day but because of the reduced weight it won't be that bad and you'll be able to walk again the next day. I really hope you come back to this and give the South Downs Way another crack. 🙂

Great video. First one of you I have watched…exciting to be out there again…since this is just like how I felt when I did it a couple of years ago, only I am a lot older and shorter and less experienced than you! Since it was my very first long distance walk EVER with a backpack on! I only planned to walk for a couple of days and that’s it. I started really early in Winchester at the crack of dawn with a 65 litre rucksack around 15kg (I think). I walked 19 miles to the Sustainably Centre campsite arriving 8pm. That climb up Old Winchester hill (where you filmed the fort) was knackering but inspiring. When I arrived I had no food, I had missed lunch at the pub because they forgot my order (and stupidly I pressed on!), and everything was closed. So I had no food all day and most of the next day. I think I only got refreshments at the farm shop at Cocks Hill north of Chichester the next day. Which was thankfully open. And from there I got a bus into town, then train back home. So I left the trail as planned after 2 days. Exhausted but totally inspired by the challenge. So much so, that I took time off work the next week after to complete the trail to Eastbourne in another 3 days. Staying at campsites or camping at the two YHAs along the way which provide meals as long as you arrive by 8pm. Which I did both times by virtually running the last few miles. The challenge was immense. Over 26 miles one day. But the hardest thing to overcome where the four major blisters on my feet which I only got through thanks to painkillers for my previous back problem which I had left over a few pills left! I can’t tell you the emotion I felt completing my first trail ever. Ok it wasn’t in one go, but it felt like I had achieved something special, walking into the unknown, for a very long time since I was a young man going backpacking 30 years previously. I cannot believe you were carrying 30kg...double the weight of my bag! I am not surprised you suffered so much and couldn’t recover for the next day. Your great video reminds me how I felt so much, only you have double the pain. Which you express brilliantly to camera, full respect to you. Good luck for when you continue like I did. Don’t want to tell you what to do, since you will adapt your strategy and come back stronger. Really look forward to your next video…

Hey Lone Ranger 22! That first day you completed without any food and for much of the following day must have been brutal! Especially with terrain like the hill up to Old Winchester Hill! That one got me…I had to sit down halfway up the hill…then when I got to the fort I had to sit down again 😂. Over 26 miles in one day also! That is epic! I hear you about the blisters, I have a big lump on my heel at the moment, was hoping it would settle down but may have to pop it before hitting the trail for the rest of it this coming week in which it’s forecast rain rain rain so that will make things interesting also! I imagine once you completed it, throughout the aches and pains it must have felt awesome! Definitely something to be proud of! Thanks for sharing your trip my friend! It’s absolutely inspired me to continue! Very much appreciated and I hope you’re having a great weekend!

You said before you started this adventure that you have never done something like this before; you planned the best way you could. You expressed concern for letting your viewers down; don't be. You cannot please everyone, so don't try. Always remember that your acceptance and validation in this life is not connected to what you do, but in who you are. Im so sorry you had to go through that, I've had similar experiences when I started did basically the same so I feel sorry for what you went through. I guess you will figure a lot of things out from this experience but if you are taking just a bivvy your pack could/should be able to get down to around 6kg without food and water pretty easily. there are a lot of shops on the south downs way if you are prepared to make a few minor detours such as at exton, harting, cocking, graffham, amberley and so on, its much easier to make those detours than carry everything, you can get away with carrying not much food at all. Also your shoes, id go for trail runners not boots if you want the extra cushioning look at hoka one one speedgoats for example. You are easily fit enough for this trail its your backpack and boots that caused this issue, mainly your backpack, I hope to see you try again. subscribed.

Good effort mate. We walked the trail about a month back and like you I really burn in the sun. There are some really exposed sections of the SDW and there is no escaping the heat. Definitely work on pack weight and try to find out what isn't a necessity. Have you ever looked into freeze dried meals? I find these the best option when on the trail. We were carrying about 12kg with water so hats off to you for carrying 30kg!! Keep it up and hope to see you back on the trail. 👍

Good watch. I started on Sunday 22nd May and finished on Thursday wild camping 4 nights. The first day was difficult but I could never have done it with 30KG on my back. Lose some weight and go lightweight as you can. I recon I was carrying 15kg with food and 2.5 litres of water. Water stops are plentiful at the start so could have run with 1 litre in places and had the other bottles empty. They'll definitely be needed between QE Country Park and Cocking though where there are zero water stops. Feel good you gave it your best shot and go again with less weight

Wow, carrying that weight that far is an amazing effort. I know exactly where you stayed, I’ve walked the SDW a couple of times. A lot of write ups put this walk as easy, it’s not. I only carry 4.5kg of gear (not including food and water), my knees just can’t cope otherwise. I think you’ll find the difference night and day when you get your weight down a bit. Brother, I packed up my hiking backpack last week. I was the one that had all my stuff stolen out of the truck and years of stuff I had collected, gone forever. But I didn't let it defeat me. I bought this really nice hiking backpack that has an external frame and the bag is a 70l. bag that can actually detach from the frame (not easily though). I loaded it up with my smaller person tent, my sleeping bag, hammock, air mattress, tarps, wool blanket, propane and small collapsible cooking burner, my machete, a medical pouch, a mosquito net, a couple cans of soup and several other items in the bag. I went out to one of our hiking trails here in South Central Texas and strapped my bag to my back. I started out walking and within a mile my lower back and shoulders was already killing me. And then about another mile or two went by and my legs were already turning into flamming jello, lol. I realized I was going to have to do a little more training before I could do anything with that backpack. So I took about half the weight and put it in my military style rucksack and have been going on walks with half the weight. And that is pretty painful after about 3 or 4 MI. So I realized I am definitely not in shape as I thought I was and I will need some solid training. Don't let it discourage you my friend, you are a true adventurer! You my good sir, embody the spirit that the men of yesteryear had!

@@TreeDeepOutdoors good to hear from you bud! I just went and did a 5 mi hike with a rucksack that was about a little more than half the weight of my hiking backpack. My rucksack basically is just my SHTF bag. It has survival and shelter/fire building equipment in it as well as ammo and other self-defense paraphernalia. I usually walk with my chest rig pack. I carry several tools, knives, earplugs, a flashlight strapped to the outside of it and my .380 inside the chest rig. If I'm walking deeper into the Texas country, I'll either bring my 12 ga. shotgun with me or my Beretta ARX 160 22 LR rifle. The 22LR is much lighter to carry, lol.

The best part about Texas is no matter what type of environment you would like to camp in we have it all. From desert, to grasslands, to mountainous areas, the Gulf Coast and even marshlands. And if you want snow we get it in the north part of Texas. Hell we got snow last year here in San antonio. It was the snowpocalypse of 2021! It was funny cuz everybody was freaking out and no power for heat and no way for them to cook. Me and my son are sitting here in the house with a fireplace going. He had a little flashlight hanging above the stove and was cooking dinner because we have a gas stove. The only time it was rough for us was when the heat would start to dissipate during the night when we were asleep and then having to get up from under the covers in the morning to go restart the fire was a little bit rough because it was freaking cold LOL!

@@TreeDeepOutdoors you know what? I was watching that guy I think his name is John Lovell from warrior poet society. And he says everybody wants to make a bug out bag. But where are you going to go? And most people think of a bug out bag for themselves. But what if you have a wife or kids? And I really like how he put it. He said instead of making a bug out bag, make a bug in bag. Instead of running from the place where you have all your stuff, fortify your household to make it your base station. Now granted I'm sure he lives out in the country where he can more easily do such things. When you live in the city and in a neighborhood where all the houses are next to each other, it's a little different. But I still think he's correct. There's no point in running from your house. Unless there is an adequate reason to leave the house. Such as a fire or hostile occupation. Definitely made me rethink my strategy.

Hang in there buddy !!! I'll be cheering ya on from sunny California !!! Your boots are probably not the best for long distance , look into trail runners shoes. The people in the states that do the APT and PCT wear them.

@@TreeDeepOutdoors Sadly no! Not once! I'm actually heading down to the south downs way next week for a few days. The wind is sure to switch east while I'm away! Living in the northwest nearly all our weather comes over the Atlantic, but rest assured, I'm ready. Campimg is the easy bit Can I ask what software or interface you use to put videos together?

As you come South, I go north! Just checked out the 10 day forecast, looks like you're going to have some good weather for it! From where I am anyway..not sure about the whole stretch. Are you intending on doing the whole trail? I'm not very technologically sound, I used to use iMovie, now I use Capcut, hasn't let me down thus far!

@@TreeDeepOutdoors Ha! Wave as we pass each other! Where are you headed? I have no firm plan, will see what I feel like. I know a lot of awesome spots up this way if you ever head to the north west (or north east for that matter! including how to evade the patrol and get away with a camp on Lindisfarne if you wanted to do that!). Safe travels, may they be drama free!

You never know! Know when someone waves and you wave back but they are actually like waving to the person behind you? It happens 😂. I'm headed to Scotland for a few days so I won't be in stealth mode so much. I do plan travelling a lot more so if I ever end up in the North West (or North East for that matter!) I'll surely give you a shout! Had no idea what Lindisfarne was until you said it and then I googled it, a Holy Island! That's super cool! I love how you get real tactical with it concerning patrols and whatnot! It sounds like I could learn a thing or two from you! Don't know whether you use it or not but I sent you a request on IG INFJ 8w9

Yes that pack was way too heavy. You might need to cut back on how much water you carry and dump any backups to things. You will be passing towns so you might even cut down your food load. Have fun traveling and stay safe.

first night you may get leg cramps and very hard to start walking the next day but it will get easier after day 5-6 or 7 (Different for everyone) but your body will self adjust and cope always good to take some deep heat lotion to massage into your legs

30kg over 15 miles is way too much for another of peopl(except hardened walkers/soldiers etc). Don't be down about it, just learn that that kind of distance, with that kind of weight is bound to hurt. You did well to get that far fella, I'd have stopped well before that.
