How Not To Buy a Porsche Boxster..

Ойын-сауық

Bought sight unseen from out of state is obviously the wrong way to buy a a sports car.. Will this Porsche gamble pay off? Probably not.

Gordon McMillan the damage is done, taking it on a gentle test drive wouldn't hurt it anymore than it is. Of course taking it on a spirited drive on the highway would be bad. But it's best he got an overall feel of the car as far as brakes/suspension/steering

  • @gordonmcmillan883

    @gordonmcmillan883

    7 жыл бұрын

Absolutely the damage is done, but a running engine can be pulled and rebuilt, whereas a grenaded engine not only can't be rebuilt, but isn't worth a core charge. It could have locked up at any time, destroyed the rest of the the transmission, and flung the car across the road into oncoming traffic. Two thousand revs is fast enough to destroy itself and a lot of other stuff too.

Yup, true, but it does happen, and I wouldn't want to be doing the paperwork. Anyway - new engine, and a trip to the bodyshop for right hand side, trunk lid, and doubtless a few other bits 8-)

A little late on this vid, but one thing to keep in mind for a rattling on the 986 is the heat shields over the cats. The fasteners are dinky as hell and the metal around them rusts them loose very easily. The bad news: It rattles with the exhaust and is annoying. The good news: Just removing the shields takes all of 5 minutes and doesn't cause any issues, besides the possibility of the rear trunk being a couple degrees warmer after a bit of driving (not actually hot; I still haul groceries back there).

That being said, my guess is a woman owned this car based upon the perfume found within it.

Yeah my Dad spent $1,000. on a steak bed 3/4 ton dually gmc. It was brought to the house. Driving of the flat bed found it did not have brakes, passenger door was duct taped shut and passenger sheet metal had more holes than a cheese grater. drivers side was all shiny and polished. under neath was worse then any vehicle I'd ever seen. broken sway bar and frame cracked both sides behind the cab. Use to be a salt depot truck. Dad saw the drivers side picture and told it was well taken care of.

Seems to be a common fault ,models can suffer cracked cylinder bores without warning, requiring a costly engine rebuild. Then there is the dreaded “intermediate shaft failure”. This is driven by the crankshaft in order to operate the camshafts, and the problem is so common that in North America, Porsche has agreed to repair Boxsters and 911s with the flat-six engine (subject to certain criteria).

It makes me think of my beater 1999 986, with manual roof, dead O2 sensors (had to disconnect the MAF to make the car run), worned out 3 spoke steering wheel, GoPro mount, average quality repaint, no spoiler, missing TCS button, right dashboard LCD dead, cracked windshield, broken side vents, oil in the cooling tank, and recently leak in the power steering system (too close to the exhaust) so no power steering. The car was already in bad shape when I bought it, but whatever the amount I put in things continued to break one after the other, so I stopped giving a shit. Definitely not my smartest 3k$ purchase, but the most fun indeed. It's really fun for sand riding or going on dust mountain road where people in sedan don't dare going.

@BigLBA1 An engine would cost twice the value of the car. And this car needs an engine. I'd bet money the owner rarely changed the oil so that ruined the motor. And that also ruins the IMS bearing which will let go and grenade the motor. And a new IMS bearing will cost a couple of grand to replace. With no maintenance, it obviously needs a clutch which is recommended at 48,000 miles and also a rear main seal. Without even the rod knock, this car would need 5 grand in maintenance to keep it running. This car is just a parts car at this point. Amazing cars for the dollar. No sports cars are a better value. But they are so cheap, it is cheaper to buy another used one than replace an engine or transmission.

The Jag XK120 coupe I bought in 1959 knocked like that too, after the sawdust the guy put in the oil got pulverized. If the Porsche was sold as a good running car it probably should have gone back, but the buyer probably would have lost all of his money if he opted for that. That is definitely NOT the way to buy any used car. On the other hand, a good running Boxster of that age would cost well over the Euro equivalent of 8k US$ so at 4k he still didn't pay too much. I don't know what an engine will cost, but it sure won't be cheap. I hope you can find out and let us know what the repair is going to cost. The rest of the car doesn't look that bad, aside from the scrapes.

IMS bearings are a problem with these engines up until 2004 when Porsche redesigned the bearing. There have been some grumbling about porous castings on the block halves, but I don't personally know of anyone with either of the above listed problems. The radiators are mounted at the front (air intake at the corners of the front bumper cover) with plumbing routed to the back of the car. I own a 3.2l Boxster S and I can tell you now that you should NEVER buy one of these "sight unseen" unless you only want the shell for a SPEC build (even then, you should have it inspected). Don't get me wrong...they are great cars and I love mine, but the cost to replace an engine is pretty pricey and well worth the cost of a PPI to avoid paying $8k-$10k for a replacement and labor.

Rod bearing tests when not as obvious as this one can be performed. The trick is to hold the rpm to about 3k rpm for 30 seconds and snap the throttle closed and listen for the faint knock of wide clearance in the bearings. If there is an issue you will hear it. Poor maintenance or poor design? That reminds me time to change oil on the old 4.0 ford ranger.

For info, there was never a 3 litre, the Boxster S was in fact 3.2 litre ;-)

I wonder if you be able to do an engine autopsy on this car to show truly what really happened with it.

IMS bearing likely shot, but there are kits that are not too pricey, this was the single type, the earlier had twin ones that were stronger

If the IMS bearing was shot, the engine would be fragged and the magnetic oil plug would look like a Chia pet.

Damn engine noise....i cannot tell but i think it would be a good sound for a near IMS bearing failure!!! This Porsche definitely didn't have the love it deserves!

ive owned boxsters for yrs lovem.. i have 3 but word of advice my friends....only the yrs 97 to 99 are safe less than 2% ims bearing failuer cuz they have the double row ims bering..... from 2000 to 2008 have single row ims and they fail more often 12% failure rate...
