    Think it would be good for you to get a nice set of pry bars for checking suspension bushes and stuff. Also don’t for get to give each wheel a good wobble to check for play in ball joints, bushes and bearings. Garage look amazing 👍

    If it were mine, I'd drop the engine and gearbox, do the IMS bearing and replace the rear seal. It's possibly worth going for one of the retrofit systems that allow the IMS to get better lubrication as well.

    A few friendly tips: Lovely to see a Boxster back! But I wouldn't worry about the IMS bearing too much but as you say if you're taking the gearbox out at some point it's worth replacing (but check previous records if it has already been changed) The audio/echo levels when you talk inside your garage are really horrible, any way of improving the sound with absorbing panels or simply talk to the camera elsewhere? I can't believe someone would track a car without first being underneath it to have a look or am I just being overly safe!?

    I misunderstood the title and i thought it said the guy in the thumbnail was 17 and had a Porsche boxster. I thought you were going to be diagnosing and troubleshooting your neighbours angsty teenage sons car and expected it to be a bit of a wreck, then you introduced Paul and i was confused for a moment then it finally made sense. Paul isnt 17, but the Porsche is.

    Must admit I looked at buying a boxster from this era a wile back and had planned a gentle drive directly to a specialist to get the risky intermediate shaft bearing (and clutch and main seal) changed straight away. Having said that, if a standard bearing has lasted >60k miles, I see little point paying out for some of the exotic replacement bearing options.

  • @mrradman2986

    @mrradman2986

    I think the opposite. I recently had the IMS bearing changed for the EPS needle roller bearing upgrade on my 2004 3.2S. The car is low miles and I hadn't spent much on it anyway. The last thing you want to be thinking about when driving the car as intended is whether any slight noises as you get near the limiter are the bearing about to disintegrate on you. Having had mine done it is great just to enjoy driving the car without thinking about it.

    If it is anything like other Porsches, diff will not be 90K, it will be 90K OR e.g. 12 years. So if this has not been done in 17 years, it is high time. Even then it is awful long and that dates back to a time when manufacturers tried to get away with the "lifetime" gearbox etc fillings, so either way, that juice needs to get out. I don't know much about the Tiptronic, but at least with the PDK, it has two circuits, one for the actual gearbox section and one for the rest of the shifting hardware, for which the interval is half that of the gearbox. Many people are not aware of that, this may be true for the Tiptronic as well.

But this has happened... it's not widespread yet, and I don't think BMW dealers are checking for it unless they have a reason to fuck you over. The examples I've seen so far have been to do with the dealer trying to get out of a warranty repair and using the fact that the car has had coding as an excuse, then charging the owner several hundred pounds for a system software "reset" to keep the warranty. To be fair the G series BMW's seem to have a lot more options now than the F's, so less reason to do coding, but it's worth point it out regardless. It is, after all, in their small print that such modifications void the electronics warranty. (not the mechanical warranty)
