@@akane742My guess: Porsche wanted to sell an ‘entry level’ car to a wider market without cannibalising the 911 market. The shared platform was a necessity as Porsche was in a bit of a financial pickle when the new 911 and Boxter were first developed. There simply wasn’t the money for different platforms. Please note that the ‘S’ variant Boxter is compared with the Carrera 911. The less expensive base Boxter has no 911 equivalent and the models above the Carrera don’t have Boxter equivalents. Porsche must have thought that they would get away with it and they did! 😁

​@@akane742 i would assume part of it is to get people onto the Porsche ownership bandwagon. That would also explain why they try to hide how good the cheaper cars are; the owners get to experience it and fall in love with the brand while those with a 911 can feel superior.

First of all, if you have the ability and resource to take apart a car why the hell are you acting like you just discovered fire when you found out that manufacturers nowadays share platforms, chassis, engine, tuning, or any parts. The 718 and 911 even share the same production line, back in the 996 and 986 era they even look the fucking same) In your philosophy, any Audi, Lexus, or BMW buyers other than the 3 series are idiots since they’re essentially based on platform from cheaper cars. (Mbq, tnga, klar…) Also if you ever drove those cars on the limit, you’ll soon realize that the 911 is a much more capable car than the 718 (base vs base, s vs s, gts vs gts). Not even getting into the options, don’t know if you’re aware that the base 718 doesn’t even come with an LSD. Of course, you can argue that we don’t drive a spec sheet. But most people just jump to the conclusion that the 718 drives better due to its smaller footprint, not even pushing. Even you do find it better to drive, there are still benefits of the rear engine layout. In terms of driving, the RR layout exaggerates your flaws. Any bad inputs can result in severe oversteer or understeer. Modern 911 can be a better teaching tool as oppose mid engine cars. Also, due to the rear biased weight distribution, you can load the brakes extra hard and trail brake deeper into a corner. And when you jump on the throttle the weight distribution gives you added traction(that’s also why the 992 turbo beats so much cars in quarter mile with “only” 650hp and 4wd). Not even mentioning the practicality, name a sports car platform that is capable of sub 7 nordschleife laptime and has usable rear seats. Nonetheless , the 911 has a much richer lineage and better image as oppose to the 718. Last, unlike other lineups (ferrari roma vs 812, mclaren 570 vs 720 .etc) To me there’s no clear hierarchy between the 718 and 911. It’s really just a matter of preference and taste (the fact that you can essentially option a 718 to the price of a 911.) Just think about it, if the 718 doesn’t have something superior to the 911 (might be it’s size or mid engine characteristics), what is the point of it existing when the world have the more capable and practical 911. Porsche surely can just make a cheaper 911. Ultimately, those are road cars, value to money or driving experience isn’t everything, even less when it comes to “premiums” like 911 and 718. Our choice of road cars is a combination of taste, value, driving experience, practicality .etc. Otherwise, we’ll all be driving around in caterhams, mx5s or RAV4 towing our radicals to the track. When your nit picking on a 911 or “luxury” product, you might as well just buy a Yaris.

@@991.2gt3 You are making the wrong comparisons. The Boxter S should be compared with the Carrera. They are almost identical which is much more than just sharing a platform. It’s like the VW Up!, Seat Mii and Skoda Citigo. They are also almost identical but their prices are also nearly the same. Similarly you could compare the Toyota Aygo, Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108. Almost identical cars at almost the same prices. The Carrera however is much more expensive than the Boxter S and that’s remarkable.

I bought a 718 Cayman S new as my first Porsche and as a "stepping stone" to a 992 911 Carrera T, but I quickly changed my tune after the first 1000 miles. I'm keeping my Cayman, flat 4 turbo and all because I love the damn thing. Perfect size. It's legitimately fast. Handling is perfection. And it sounds great even as a 4 cylinder. The fact that I specced it out to be exactly what I wanted means that I formed some sort of emotional connection to it. There's just something about buying your first Porsche and speccing it exactly the way you want it to be.

Funny, I did the same thing. I have a 2018 Cayman GTS (4cyl). I bought it CPO and was planning to get into a 992 within the next few years. My girlfriend actually has a 992 911s, and I’ve driven it handfuls of times. Never once do I get out of the 911 and think “damn, my cayman just is no match for it”. Other than a slightly better exhaust note, there really isn’t much I feel like I am missing to add to the price increase of nearly double. It surely isn’t double the car ….

You are so right - I bought my first Porsche- a 944 in 1984 - the same way. Ordered it in May and it showed up in January. Her name was Tricia and I kept the car until 2000. I’ve had a Macan, Cayenne and 2 911s since then - but none are as special as Trixie.

Lucky you, I can only afford the base Boxster, it struggles to drive up to a steep ramp but other than that I am very happy with it. Even if I had the money for a 911 I would still want a Boxster cause I hate the useless rear seats on the 911 and the lack of a trunk 😅

@@ozTomSawyer There's nothing base about a base Boxster. They're still true sportscars. The 'base' models set the already incredibly high standards and higher trims just add a bit more to it.

I was 981 exterior designer - we had to style the shared hood to suit both this and the 991. Some of the underbody and mechanical components are shared too. I fought to get specific door outer skins for it (whilst sharing the inner structure), as the 986/987 shared those with nthe 996/997along with the hood and initially the front fenders and headlamps. Having different outer doors allowed changing their section and getting the indentation leading to the side intakes. Also the more geometric front and rear fender sections. The financial trade-off (we worked to very strict budgets!) was losing the separate roof cover, which meant more of a hole around the roof well when open, but also allowed adoption of Audi TT components giving us a faster folding action and saving weight. 981 windscreens and A Pillars are different than the 991s too, being shorter. The whole idea was to get away from the "cheaper 911" image and give the mid engined cars their own proud identity - hence the "platteau" fender tops and vertical headlamps which reference the 906/7/8, etc. sports racers of the '60s. The height of the Boxster rear deck and luggage bay floor of the Cayman was increased by about 30mm during the program to accomodate an Audi TT in line 4 cylinder motor - of course the 4 cylinder eventually ended up being a boxer. Incidentally, the 981 exterior theme was chosen at end of 2007 and production versions signed off by early 2009. The 918 program started in September 2009 to preview the new fender themes on a halo car and as a limited production program was completed and appeared before the 981s were introduced. The GT4 was originally never meant to happen, but, after the events of 2009, Piech, now in control, departed from the previous dictum of not allowing the 911 to be rivalled in performance or dynamics and said "let them fight". That one got the GT3 cooling package and front end, hence the vent in front of the hood....

Hugh, thanks for the input, much appreciated. There's some great info in your comments. I was unaware of the 90x history behind the 981 design. It makes me look at my car in a very different way now. I'm very happy you fought for the different door design. It makes such a difference, and I've always thought the 'hourglass' shape that is pretty much seen from any angle, side, top, front, or rear, makes the car flow so well.

@@hughrobinson9978 New owner of 981 here. You described an amazing journey styling the 981! Everything you pushed for made this into a future classic. All the panels flow together and the continuous tapering of the panels into the side intakes makes a world of difference compared to prior generations. When you combine the tight packaging with the freedom to have a design line follow through from front to end you get the best Porsche design of all time in my view. Sure the Carrera GT and 918 look just as sharp, but they do so with more real estate. It's hard to get the presence of those cars without the wider footprint. 305 section tires fit under the 981 body while having a very narrow body so that we can enjoy them on narrow canyon roads and zip around town. I have the GTS, and the only area of improvement would be to have a 9,000 rpm 4.0 under the soft top. I don't want anything else from the 911, which in soft top form looks a bit like a bathtub by comparison.

You can even program certain control modules in the 981 as 991. I changed the programming of the electronic power steering module in my 981 to the GT3 calibration using PIWIS and I am really enjoying the steering feel. It's heavier at low speed but I feel like it gives me more feedback especially when cornering at higher speed.

There are substantial engineering differences between the cars though, the 911 is still the higher performance car, the engine sits lower for example. Its a minor mystery as to why the boxster/cayman didn't simply have its motor lowered an inch and a half, but largely its split between Porsche protecting the 911s status and the other car being engineered for a less sporting purpose. The cayman is more of a normal daily driver car with raw performance being less of a priority. Which is weird because not only is the 911 the smart man's sports car with a back seat and decent storage, a car that can actually be driven in the real world, but the cayman sacrifices that practicality for a traditional sportscars mid engine layout..... I know that dating all the way back to the first Porsche the engineers wanted a mid engine chassis, but other concerns pushed them to adapt VWs rear engine economy car layout. Then after decades of building a dedicated fan base, every attempt to move towards a fundamentally better layout caused a major backlash. The original Boxster wasn't an exception there. Imo, if they had the conviction, they could easily build a Cayman/boxster that cleanly beats the 911 in all metrics, and challenge the 911 elites to choose between tradition and winning.

I have a 991.2 and I always thought they shared 80% of the parts. Porsche is the king of profit but damn they make great cars.

I own both 911 and a cayman and both are exquisite machines, thank you Porsche for keeping the high standards for all products. Another great video Jeff. As a Base 981 Cayman owner, who does all my own maintenance, I must agree on the build quality of Porsche, it's very good. Most panel what need to be removed for access come off and go on easily. The structure is also well made. The only disappointment I have had with my Cayman is my Headlining dropped. Removal, recover and replacement completed for less than 10% of the Porsche quote. This is the first maintenance task I have done without your guidance. All other tasked done after watching and following your guidance videos, many thanks. As for the performance of my 2.7 Cayman, it puts a smile on my face each and every time I drive it and can't see that a 911 could do anything more. With 2 stowage compartments we can pack safely for a week away with an esky, coffee machine and pillow and of course clothes!

I own neither, yet.I do however own a low mileage 50 year old 914 with modifications and have been blown away by the handling due to the weight distribution of the mid engine.This video has helped me with my hesitation with the boxster.I appreciate the time and effort you put into this video.

I’ve been variously tinkering with my 987.2 Boxster, 997.2 Carrera S and now 981 Boxster GTS over the years, and always been amused by the commonality of parts. Porsche really does know how to engineer a platform. 😃 (Loving your 981 tear down guides, BTW; they’ve helped me on more than one occasion.)

Great video! I have a base 718 cayman and have taken a lot of it apart for modifications. I too noticed the many shared parts between models and years. I love because it is easier to source parts and to upgrade from salvaged cars.

Fascinating video, Jeff! I drove a 992 Carrera S more than 800 kms down the coast and up the High Country. I loved it, but couldn’t see the value, so I bought a 981 Boxster, and thrashed it along the same 800 km route, and in almost every way, it was as good as or better than the 992. It’s simply a brilliant machine. Your video goes a long way to explaining why.

Brilliant, the world needs more people like you. I suspected this when I took my 911 Turbo for service & the local Porsche dealer loaned me a Boxster & I remember thinking why did I spend so much money for basically the same car. Good job 👍

I had a deposit on a 911 at the Porsche dealer and asked for a test drive in a Boxster S they had on the lot. I bought the Boxster. I’ve been out to two Porsche track days and the Boxster is more fun, many 911 owners were surprised as well. The Boxster is easier for me to push to the limits, it’s basically a go kart. The Boxster S 6 cyl. 3.4 is a de tuned 911 engine and PDK transmission.

Thanks for the informative video and research. I love my 2006 Boxster S is a wonderful driving machine. I purchased it in 2018 with around 43,000 miles on it and now have nearly 90,000. It is a very nice weekend and day trip car. With the “frunk” and trunk it’s is quite useful. I will most likely upgrade to a newer version but probably not a 911. Although, Porsches are amazingly well built vehicles.

Great video! I own both a Boxster S (986) and a 911 (997). I've owned the Boxster for 24 years. I remember reading that even a 996 TURBO (Mezger engine and all) only cost Porsche about $4000 more to build than a 2.5L Boxster - yet they charged triple the price!

Awesome video Jeff, you are a true credit to the community and you helped me with a recent interior project. It's not entirely surprising, the 981 punches way above its weight, your next challenge is to work out how to flash the 991 dme data onto the 981 3.4 😊. Also worth noting that some parts have unique part numbers but end up being the same part, the glovebox for example has both sets printed on the back.

I’ve been waiting for a video like this forever! I’ve been telling 911 owners this for some time and since I’ve recently began “refreshing” my 12’ Cayman S (987.2) and I really began to notice the same exact thing. My hunch started with the basics and just using my eyes. Everything just looked the same such as splash guards, fasteners, underbody linings, interior switch gear, coatings such as stone guard, brakes, suspension components etc. But it wasn’t until I started ordering factory parts that I also went down this rabbit hole and discovered the same thing! I guess while the underpinnings are terribly similar and the quality of parts and build are the same, the 911 will likely still outpace the Cayman in value overtime because of the marketing machine that is Porsche, keeping that model on its pedestal and 911 buyers who desperately need to feel as though their cars are “better” because they paid more. And while it’s not by a long shot, they’ll likely never allow themselves to see it that way. I love 911’s but I also love almost everything Porsche has ever made. I only point this out because I can’t tell you how many times 911 owners I’ve spoken to who say, “yeah, drive this for a while and then step up to a 911” or “a Cayman is a great first Porsche” or “do some track days with this and get a 911”. In every case I’ve said “what for?” My 987.2 is a forever car … if I’m blessed enough, I’ll get a 911 in addition to and daily drive it, at best.

I bought my 2000 Boxster S new 24 years ago and still own it today. Last year I added a 911 (997). I love both cars. I will say that the Boxster is to me the more pure/focused sports car, the midengined layout handles better, and I prefer having a rear trunk over useless rear seats. My 3.2L 986 S has the same brakes & transmission as the 3.4L 996 of that era. I'm glad to see more people waking up to the benefits of the Boxster/Cayman these days.

Incredible stuff!

Quite an eye opener! I had originally planned to buy a 986 911, but got priced out of the market. My current car, and first Porsche, is a 987 Cayman S. I had already realised the Cayman shares many parts with its 911 big brother. It was only when I downloaded the parts list from Porsche and examined the part numbers that I realised how many parts are shared by with the 997. For me the Cayman is the perfect package. It is a versatile load carrier as well as being really fun to drive, and predictable when pushed hard.

So cool to have this breakdown. We need some awesome videos on the cayenne! I have a ‘10 Cayenne GTS. Thanks for your hard work.

What great content. A long time ago, I had a long discussion with an experienced watchmaker. He showed me his workshop and all of his amazing gadgets, including an acoustic oscilloscope to diagnose by sound. He informed me that the Bulova brand was of exact same quality under the hood as a rolex. I had my heart set on a rolex, so i pushed him. Reliability? Robustness? Materials? Water resistance? He then went on to list parameters i hadn't thought of and then showed me. I was young and naive and was astounded but this a is normal industrial marketing fact. Badge premium is a thing.

I like your style. I can't part with the old girl as it holds a dear place in my heart. Both convertibles but completely different cars. I enjoy both of them.

Fantastic job of doing a forensic autopsy on the Boxster/Cayman and the 911. I looked at a 2015 Carrera base and a 2015 base Cayman and I noticed the many similarities as you outlined. . I ended up buying a fairly loaded low mileage CPO base Cayman for almost exactly half the cost of the non CPO Carrera. Easy decision. My Cayman gets mistaken for a 911 by most non car enthusiasts and it has been absolutey wonderful...the best quality car I've ever owned.

When i started working on my 987.2 that was the first thing i noticed was how much parts shared with the 997 even the base carrera has the exact same brake setup. I think that if you cn afford the maintenance of a boxster/cayman you could afford a 911 if the initial outlay wasnt as high. Great content and 100% agree.

Having intentionally purchased a 981 CGTS in 2016 over the 911 purely for the driving attributes, wrenching on the car has led me to your same conclusion. Thanks for the deep dive. Have driven both a 981 Boxter GTS (driving holiday in Europe) and a 991 C2S (my car). Both PDK, both great driving cars and both more capable on the road than the I am on the controls! (a feature I don't mind admitting to). I found the Boxster so perfectly balanced and very much "point it where you want to go and it goes there" type experience. Whereas the 911 has, not surprisingly, a more pitch forward/squat backward dynamic on the road. My wife much prefers the Boxster characteristics and I enjoy the 911's character. Those looking into a Porsche sports car should definitely try out both options to find what they like. Then go out and drive them every chance they get :)
