How Nesting Dolls Are Made - Full Version

Where do matryoshka nesting dolls come from? I mean, really come from?
Roman and Walton of Golden Cockerel timed our visit to Polkhovski Maidan to really find out. In the spring of each year, when the sap is rising, Maidan villagers venture out
into the forest to harvest the linden trees that will become matryoshkas in the years to
come. In the spring of 2000, this annual event took place as usual, with one exception: a
couple of crazy foreigners (one from America, one from St. Petersburg, which is far
enough removed from Maidan to be considered foreign) tagged along to document the
occasion.
Myth that all pieces are carved from one piece of wood.
Carver approaches a larger lot, say 100 at a time.
Tools: lathe w/ balance bar, four types of chisels(pipe, spoon, knife, hook-each
approximately 2 feet long and heavy!), set of handmade wooden calipers particular to a
size of doll (a drawing or photo w/ arrows & explanation).
Tools are homemade by village blacksmith, etc, from car axles, available resources.
Wooden calipers also home made by carver and one-of-a-kind.

Just reminds me that things that are made by hand, by real people, are so special! Loved seeing the people behind the work.
As a beginner woodturner I am in awe at the mastery of the tools used. As an artist the painting and consistency throughout the dolls is breathtaking!
From the cutting of the trees - to the finished painting of these dolls - I never knew there were so many hands in making them. Beautiful.
Thank you for the careful work to teach us how these beautiful dolls are created. Well done!
Such a great look into how the nesting dolls are made. Thank you. I have always wanted a pair but cannot find them anywhere near me. Will have to order online one day.

I've had a little 3-piece matryoshka since I was little, and my parents don't remember where they got it from. It has long been a staple of my and my sister's childhood, sitting on the shelf or being played with. I always loved how painterly they look, and my dad has gotten into woodworking lately, so I've been considering getting into it, too.
Absolutely wonderful video!!!Loved it!

I have a Matryoshka Nesting doll (from Russia) & I think they are rather beautiful. This video gave me a perspective idea of how they were made. I am also very much interested in everything Russian.

How's the music track called?
Are the linden trees in a managed forest? An earlier video said that linden was the only species used for nesting dolls but accounted for a small percentage of trees. This is really interesting - thanks!

Linden trees are very widespread in the that area. For decades, the carvers harvested the linden trees by picking up individual trees that best fit their needs making the wild forest less dense. They could visit the same place next year to select another grown up tree. In the recent years when the forest management became more enforced, they pay for a forest plot to harvest and cut every tree that grows there. I assume it's up to the management what to plant then on that plot.
He sure works fast

I wish I was this talented with carving, but the closest I think I'll ever come to is papercraft...

It's not difficult. if you never tried looks difficult. This is an easy wood turning. There are more complex and complicating woodworking
