Russians dolls are known as matreshka or matryoshka. They have a strong association with Russia, but are a surprisingly recent invention. More words videos at www.wordsoftheworld.co.uk/

My grandma went to Russia a few years ago, and when she came back she brought my sister and me each a doll.

In Finnish we call them "maatuska". xD It's not really very close even... But my brother and me used to have our own "maatuskas" as kids. I remember that mine was dressed in black, red and green and his in blue, white and red. Mine always reminded me of our mother because she liked to dress in black and red. I think it survives because it's just so brilliant! It's such a fun idea.

I love when people who speak a gender-marking language do mark the gender in a non-gender-marking language, as she did at the end, referring to Russia as "her".

It is computer code for a computer language called Lisp. Usually, computer programs are simply one instruction after another, next, next, next, next. But Lisp is interesting because it has a nested structure. You can put elements inside of lists, and lists inside of lists. So it reminds me of the dolls inside of dolls. :-)

Yes, that's what I said. She marked gender while speaking English, probably influenced by Russian....

I wonder if you've heard its use in science fiction as well? Matryoshka brains in particular, not sure of the origins of its use in this way, but it is a neat concept!
