How My New Glider is Manufactured at Alexander-Schleicher - AS33 Me Ep. 2

Ғылым және технология

This is a how my new high performance glider is manufactured in Germany at Alexander-Schleicher. It was a big surprise to see my own AS33 Me fuselage for the first time.

  • @SteFly

    Hi David, I don´t know the exact numbers. We will display my AS33 Me at the AERO exhibition in Friedrichshafen, which is in one month. AS offered me their reserved slot for a factory glider, so that I can participate at WGC in the USA. The AS33 Me which I tested in one of my videos, is also a privately owned glider.

    I don't know much about helicopters, but wouldn't it be best to build everything as light as possible, since the fuel is pretty expensive and you can fly for longer distances? Or would the heli be too unstable due to the low weight, especially in windy conditions?

    Interesting. It's thought provoking what can be done with composites but I'm concerned by the 2000 man-hours. I think it has to be possible to manufacture it in a way much less labor intensive. For instance the typical 2 sided approach where you glue two parts together, why not lay up the complete form on the inside of a closed mold? It might require a specialized motorized rig with a camera on but it must be worth it for the strength and skipped steps. Both for fuselage and wings. Fiberglass hot tubs are complex composite shapes sold for 3000$ retail. I know this is more ambitious but still. When something could possibly be put together with ease then a 2000 man-hour process should be questioned. The cloth and resin can be quite inexpensive so it would be a major revolution to build it faster. Is it a fiberglass plane or carbon? why not carbon. Carbon is more expensive but insignificant to the advantages that pay for themselves.

  • @SteFly

    @SteFly

    4 ай бұрын

    You need all the mechanics for the controls inside the wing and fuselage. Everything needs to be aligned perfectly and inspected, so that it´s safe to fly with this glider. I´m sure Alexander-Schleicher put a lot of thoughts into the manufacturing process and they know what they are doing. Most of the parts are made of carbon fiber and some crash resistant parts of the fuselage in Aramid. And also the raw materials must be certified for use in aviation.

  • @DanFrederiksen

    @DanFrederiksen

    4 ай бұрын

    @@SteFly the wing looked quite translucent and many of the insides looked like fiberglass, not carbon. It looks like quality work but I don't think you can assume the process is optimal. Elixir makes their planes as single piece wings and fuselage. Car manufacture seems to be below 100 man-hours including all parts suppliers. I wonder if for instance it could be made with big steel molds that are polished so it has optical finish when it comes out of the mold. They would be difficult to make but it would be a one time thing. 2500 hours is an enormous amount of labor.

    Sehr interessant und wirklich tolle und qualitativ hochwertige Flugzeuge. Leider machen die Preise unseren "Sport" immer elitärer, was sehr schade ist. Das ist aber bei allen Herstellern das gleiche Problem. Nicht zuletzt als Folge einer desaströsen Politik in unserem Land und der EU... Einziger Trost - die Gebrauchtflugzeuge bleiben schön preisstabil oder gewinnen sogar an Wert ;-)

  • @StudentGoose

    @StudentGoose

    I don't know if it making the sport really more expensive. Compared to the last 30 years, yes. But before that there were much less private owned gliders, and most pilots only flew the club gliders. These days it seems like 75% of the glider pilots with a license have their own private glider
