carolyn mmitchell I don’t think gravity will change the smaller you are. 10KG will still be 10 KG regardless of your size. Humans are weak because we don’t rely on our strength all the time to survive(not anymore), we have technology and machines to do the heavy lifting. The fact is that insects has different anatomy than us mammals. They’re designed or evolved that way for a reason. Rhino Beetles are strong because they burrow(takes a lot of strength to dig the ground) in the ground during the day since most of them are nocturnal and to be safe from predators. Dung beetles are strong because they have to roll a huge dung to eat and breed in it, their lifestyle involves a lot of strength to move heavy dung a lot. They have exoskeleton as well which helps their strength. Imagine if they had skin like us? They would be in pain all the time from digging and their skin will get a lot of scratches from fighting another male and might bleed to death.

Chase Samuel even Egyptians worship the dung beetles. Even more interesting is that, the mummies are a copy from the dung beetle’s Metamorphosis. In the 3 stages of the beetle’s Metamorphosis there is the pupa stage where it waits to turn into a beetle. I believe finding a decent sized cockroach where he's located won't be easy. I wanna see what kind of power the wood roaches have down here in Texas. They're huge. The smaller ones, they can spread disease easily. If they're infected with something. They're surprisingly clean bugs. But their systems are what cause them to be hosts for nasty things. Cockroaches themselves aren't innately gross and get a bad rap. They're just a pest similar to ants or silverfish. It's the fear of disease that gets people.

Exoskeleton-having insects usually use hydraulics. They pump their blood around like a piston, where our muscles contract and pull instead. That's why they are able to exert so much force for their size. If we had our skeleton on the outside we could have evolved with this type of muscles as well, but this has the downside, that if we get injured, we're kinda screwed unless we can moult. You don't want a hole in your high-pressure blood piston.

Hey @The Action Lab- the beetle you have there is a carabid (ground beetle), of the family Carabidae. They are primarily carnivorous, especially as adults. The genus and species is a little tougher to determine- if you're living in the US, it could be Harpalus, otherwise it may be another species within the subfamily Harpalinae just based on how the head meets the pronotum along with the antennal movement and distinct relative length.

I think that's a darkling beetle. Cellar beetle probably?
