How Much PROTEIN Do You Need? (Fix Your Diet) | Dr. Steven Gundry

Ойын-сауық

“You need to eat meat to build muscle”
It’s something I hear ALL the time.
But the truth of it is, animal protein is NOT all it's cracked up to be.
And in fact, when it comes to protein consumption in general, there are quite a few misconceptions surrounding this critical nutrient.
So on this episode I let you in on the TRUTH about protein consumption. I’ll reveal the one protein you should always avoid, and explain why a vegetarian diet may be the healthiest diet out there - EVEN if you want to build big muscles.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- How much protein your body really needs every day (the answer will surprise you)
- Why the creator of the Atkins diet gained so much weight and why the Atkins diet may have the same effect on YOU
- The real reason the “meat-only” carnivore diet works (hint: It’s NOT protein)
- A surprising “hidden danger” in red meat that could actually harm your health
- Why the world’s “superolds” all share this 1 thing in common (and it’s not their diet)
- The 1 weird thing that happens when older people stop eating so much protein
- The truth about “grass-fed” beef (prepare to be SHOCKED)
- How to get the benefits of cutting calories WITHOUT cutting calories every day
- What my “cheat day” actually looks like
- My favorite “on-the-go” protein snack
- My favorite source of protein and how it can “turn on” your longevity genes (it even contains lectins!)
- The “salad solution” for meeting all your body’s protein needs
- The “buggy” benefits of intermittent fasting (plus: The dangers of fasting too long)

Health studies are so very subjective. For every study the he says shows that red meat causes heart disease and cancer can be debunked by other studies that say that is complete BS because it depends on the quality. I consume grass fed, low fat red meat so I believe there is a difference between what "type" of meat and not necessarily a specific protein you are consuming. BTW... not upset here but just stating a fact that every doctor is biased to whatever study they WANT to believe is true. I've also read several studies that said vegetarian diets are not healthy so there ya go. Everyone, including doctors, will believe a specific study that is more aligned to what they believe. Not angry, just stating a fact.

When I first started Keto 12 years ago i was doing a strict 87% fat/8% protein/5% carbs which worked out at about 50g of protein a day. I wasted away so badly people thought I was sick. Diet these days is Keto Carnivore (75% + non-starchy veg) with 1g of protein per pound of body weight (180lbs). I'm 15% body fat and have enough muscle naturally that people think I hangout in a gym, which I don't. My body thrives on protein and hates carbs, but it took me 50 years to realise that. Should point out that people think I'm about 10 years younger than I actually am. Your mileage may vary.

Are you Northern European heritage? I have a theory…that’s completely overlooked. If our heritage, DNA, determines our appearance then obviously it determine all the other parts and functions of our body as well. If you come from the north, your ancestors were geared to paleo. Way too cold to farm much. More protein and no grains. This low protein is so wrong for so many of us. To me it’s more than obvious. There is no diet for all. And what kind of meat is studied in these studies? What are the animals fed? What are they injected with? It’s unclear. Comparing apples and oranges. You can prove anything you want with a “study”. So eat what makes you feel best. Every body has different needs. He’s talking about elderly so it doesn’t really apply to all either.

Interesting video, thanks. You said that the study suggested that no more than 30g of the 90g protein per MEAL was synthesised into muscle. Well, that doesn't mean that you don't need more than 30g a DAY, since you can have several meals a day. Also, it doesn't mean that the rest of the protein wasn't used or beneficial in other parts of the body, since protein isn't just used for muscle synthesis. Plus obviously, larger sized people and say body builders, and strength athletes are likely to use much more than 30g of protein a day.

Interesting that the '20% protein" mentioned at the beginning of the video is also the recommended amount of carbs daily. My husband has liver disease and his liver doctor advised us to reduce his red meat because excess amounts are the equivalent of extra carbs. Something to do with the body processing a certain amount of protein, then dropping the rest into the carb/glucose cycle.

Very interesting stuff. Another good reason to reduce intake of Red Meat is re balancing MTOR/AMPK as we get older. When we are young and Growing MTOR is great and eating meat is fine but as we age we get STUCK into MTOR and are no longer sensitive to it (Kind of like Insulin sensitivity) So a paradox may be that as we age it may be better to reduce our GROWTH (Mtor) pathway that built muscle when we were young but no longer does so as we age. So eating LESS protien may restore our sensitivity to MTOR and Improve muscle growth?

He talks about our bodies digesting mucus and gut cells which he claims is a protein source. If this theory was true we could literally live for ever on a very little to no protein diet. Biology and physical science works on similar principles and one principle that is not questioned is perpetual motion. The body living off itself is more or less claiming the body is in perpetual motion which is a physical impossibility. These digested cells are damaged and are no longer complete protein sources. 20 to 30 grams of protein per day may support life but the real question should be does it promote optimal health and vitality.

As they try and train for strength, they simply cannot build muscular strength without the building blocks. Gluconeogenesis happens when you over consume food. Frail older adults aren’t over eating. My doctor had me take whey protein a few times a day. The whey helped a lot. This problem was an offshoot of some health issues and once those got better I no longer needed a lot of protein. And I only seem to need red meat about once a month so I don't eat a lot of meat. I seem to do well this way. Interesting that if you eat more protein than you need that your body won't use it.

Feels way more intense killing a large mammal that has a similar nervous system and body development to our own and perhaps our instincts are giving us a clue. I assume most people out there would be more comfortable killing a fish (especially shellfish) rather than a cow

Grass fed and finished could mean it ate grass one day, then ate grain up until it was gonna be slaughtered and on the last day given grass again. 100% grass fed is all it needs to say, folks.

grass fed or not grass fed, red meat is red meat; the problem is that cancerous cells use a substace present in red meat to hide themselves from the immune system and therefore avoid to be destroyed. Fish doesn't contain this substance.

The balls of both feet hurt (never had that before) and 2. Bowel movements are like diarrhea, no snake in the toilet, do you have any suggestions? Also, i know you probs have done this, but in the cobb salads, don't eat any foods with lectins; and also know where your meats are coming from and whether or not they are also eating lectin based foods like corn and grains

According to Dr Atkins' wife, he wasn't obese when he died. Here's an extract of her reacting to obesity claims, from an interview on CNN: "I was outraged when I first read that because it's totally not true," Veronica Atkins said from Miami, Florida. "He was not overweight. He did not have heart failure," she added. Atkins slipped and fell on an icy street April 8, suffering a severe head injury, and remained in a coma until life support was withdrawn April 17. He was 72. The Wall Street Journal published a story based on a medical examiner's report saying that Atkins had a history of heart disease and heart attacks, and that at the time of his death, the more than 6-foot-tall doctor weighed 258 pounds -- considered obese by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's body-mass index calculator. Veronica Atkins said her husband gained as much as 60 pounds after entering the hospital after the accident. "The physicians told me it was because of all the liquids they were giving him," she said of the intravenous feedings her husband received. She also denied reports that a heart attack caused her husband's fall. "He did not have a heart attack, he definitely did not have a heart attack. That comes from his cardiologist," she said. Atkins' injuries from the fall were critical, his widow said. "Half of his head was gone, half his brain had to be taken off, practically," Veronica Atkins said. "The cranium certainly was gone. I mean, it was a severe, severe, severe trauma to the head."

Interesting, but I wish you'd give the dose in terms of grams per kg of body weight. Should I assume the relationship is linear and if a 150 lb. person needs 30g of protein per day a 200 lb. person needs 40g per day? You also seem to suggest that protein requirements are pretty constant regardless of the amount of exercise being done. Is it really true that a person lifting weights 3 or 4 hours per week has the same protein requirements as someone who doesn't lift? If I've misunderstood, what's the delta in protein required?

So it depends what goals one has, more muscle mass, or a Longer/Healthier life?

It so much matters what we do, we are not hunter gatherers anymore most of us desk jockey and if we don’t have much outdoors we don’t use that many muscle to be used in first place and so we need to be easy on carb and protein. Balance diet sounds ok the type of work we do. A cowboy on ranch and a frequent flying CEO, to a rice field farmer in far east, to a high performing athlete. It’s all diverse. Asians are smaller in size as they stopped hunting and learn agriculture quickly in comparison to west because adverse weather and terrain hey were in, lack of big families support have had them on their toes all the time. No wonder they are big and mostly lived on meat. In Comparison to Asia where weather is warmer great for agriculture they learns to domesticate animal for milk butter eggs, ate grains pulses and lavish seafood, they lived in communities and worked hard in field to metabolised their carb consumption. Problem arises when they didn’t adjusted their diets in comparison of the physical work they do. They sit in posh offices in air condition room hardly anytime for walks and exercise and remained hooked to their high carb diet Causing diabities. So one has to look exactly what they do.

5-6% protein is the proportion in mother's milk and other mammalian milk - that means, the remaining food are fats and carbohydrates. High quality protein is the key. As dr. Gundry recommends, I eat egg-yolks and feed the whites to the dogs. Also Dr. Layman recommends supplementing the right kind of amino acids - leucine , lysine etc. High protein toxicity could tax the liver.

It is fine to know this opinion but there is much more than only protein intake... If you eat meat for protein... there is not only protein but there is phosporus , vitamins, minerals. So much phosporus to calcium can create serious problems. Again you compare studies where is red meat eaten... how you can trust that people real know what amount of meat they eat. In the studies there is not mentioned ehat they eat with meat. You mentioned that pescatarian diet (carnivore based on fish) is better but you know about danger of Pufa??? I don't think with this. I believe we need more protein but we should cycle it ...one day be low and another increase mainly after workout when you want put on muscles.... You mentioned plant proteins.... interesting because nature will give you pure protein from plants... this is just human invention... Conclusion : you are right in most but you don't know everything. Nobody know and i don't think anyone will know ...
