    This is great content. It really puts finances in perspective to time. I never really knew about being financially savvy until the past few years. I just thought If you worked and put in your hours, save some money, paid off debts that life would just happen. I’m thirty, have student loans and a mortgage. But I’m Happy to say that my investment portfolio has doubled what I’ve put in so far and I also have some savings for immediate cushion. Life is beautiful!

    Owning profitable businesses, income producing real estate, stocks, bonds, dividends is one of the safest ways to grow your nest egg! Trust me, we’re well into the “messy middle” and our portfolio is touching, if not slightly in excess of $2 million. 😊 It all just sorta happened. We made common sense decisions financially all along the way, and now we’re here, and still a few years away from being 40. We both began our working careers in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis and seeing what could happen made us want to prepare ourselves to be able to weather another financial storm should it ever arise. To me, that’s a big contributor to the decisions we made back then, that got us where we are today.

    You bring up a great issue. With all the weird stuff going on with education right now, I've been having a lot of discussions with my highschool aged son. He has expressed frustration that they are learning some really fringe stuff, but have covered nothing about what or how to manage the money they will make after graduation. I think this should be a part of the core curriculum and personally hate that I'm trying to learn what I can now (in my 40s) when I could have done so much earlier (almost passively) and with very little effort. We go to school to gain employment, work to make money, than have no idea what to do with the end product.

    I would say military is great if you are smart and pick a good job. My husband picked military and I picked college. I do envy his job experience but the military life is certainly not for the faint of heart. I think more people need to talk about affordable colleges that can actually be paid off with a part time job. They exist I went to one and got a job with the same salary as people who were in debt up to thier eye balls. Love how media keeps putting out that everyone is in debt to normalize it so future generations don't think twice about the price. Sorry education isn't priceless. Also good job picking a practical career with a good return on investment.

On the flip side, I think cheaper parts of the country (Kansas City, Tulsa, etc) will get a bit of a boost. Reason being, the lockdowns from the pandemic made people (and companies) realize that many of their employees can indeed work remotely without much issue. Therefore, people in less expensive parts of the country are snatching up remote work from companies in Seattle and LA, therefore swiping up some of that higher salary. When I hear net worth I think all assets minus liabilities. When you say 5 to 6 times your salary saved up are you talking about liquid cash saved up or just your total net worth. Having invested in my property at 19 buying a foreclosed home and fixing it up Im doing very well for 31. I am in the trades and took on no additional debt like a worthless college degree. Between an IRA, 401K, Savings, property and other assets along with other investments I feel comfortable where I am at. Id argue to say the vast majority of people would do better learning a trade while in high school and moving right into the workforce than a 4 year college program. Although that takes actual work, which no one wants to do anymore.

    A college degree is for many a waste. A degree provides "opportunity" for more income in many cases, but does not "guarantee" it. The "likelihood" to increase earning potential comes from other things, such as effort, professional connections, what your degree is in, what other skills you have, your ability to articulate thoughts and speak to others, show kindness, be sincere, have empathy and a host of other intangibles. Hard work above all else.

    One item not taken in consideration based on amount needed for retirement is the average inflation of the US Dollar being ~1.41% annually. When saying you need $1mm at retirement, as an example in comparison to what you make now, at the age of 30 and if retiring at 65 you truly need ~$1.6mm for it to be the equivalent of $1mm in today's standards...that is if inflation doesn't surpass the current annual average.

    Net worth is your assets minus what you owe. For example, whatever equity you have in your house would be in the asset column and whatever is left that you owe on that house would be subtracted from that number. Do this but include all savings and assets and all debts and this will give you your net worth. Hopefully the statistics that are used in this video are aligned with this because sometimes I see incorrect information out there with regard to net worth and I think that’s why it is often confusing for people.

  • @Kcducttaper1

    @Kcducttaper1

    Net worth is defined as "assets minus liabilities". So, for net worth, you would add up everything you own of value such as: - home equity - cars - property value - retirement account - anything of value (etc) ...and then subtract what you owe from: - student loans - credit card debt - current mortgage value (etc) The resulting number is your net worth. The net worth number he used in the video, I believe, is the current average net worth by age of a normal American. It's not what you should be at (you should be a LOOOOT higher), but it's just a data point on what the average is.
