in my opinion the coins are virtually priceless. considering the john wick universe these coins are mainly representative. they are more of a symbol. if you are part of this underworld and are presented one of these you MUST honor it. you never know when you might need to cash one in, so you wouldn't melt it down. they might as well be made of lead. they would still be as valuable.

@@EroticOnion23 When made of gold it's harder to fake, as it's more expensive. Also someone caught faking them is likely to get killed. Sometimes the coins are redeemed for above their monetary value, sometimes beneath, and given that you only purchase services from people involved with the underground it would be very dangerous to try to counterfeit them. Now if they are made of gold it would however be worth it, and if anyone ever came across them it would be the best thing to do, to melt them down for their gold value. This would make them untraceable. So if you happen to kill one of John Wick's colleagues and loot a big stash of gold coins, the best thing to do would be to melt them down and then quietly sell the gold to a pawn shop or somesuch. One thing the Continental could do to increase security here would be to include some platinum in the mix, even 1%. This would allow them to through agents working certain pawn shops or other businesses, to determine when someone had melted down coins by detecting that quantity of platinum in with the gold after an exchange. Of course any metal combination could be used but "cheapening" the coin with baser metals has symbolic implications so I think if anything they would go for platinum as it is even rarer and more expensive than gold.

The only small pet peeve I had about the first John Wick movie was that I thought he should have had a lot more gold in his buried case than shown @ 0:47 . He had 24 cylinders of gold. I believe each cylinder can hold twenty 1oz gold coins. So, 480 gold coins. The spec price of gold today is $1,886.70 so that would be a total of $905,616 which does not seem like a lot for the greatest assassin out there, I would have expected to see his case filled to the brim with gold coins like a pirate's chest. That image alone would shown the audience how effective John was at his profession. A quick montage of him scooping all that gold out of his case in order to gain access to his weapons and ammo below would have been the cherry on the top.

When your the top dog you don’t get a lot of frequent low level targets. As viggo said, John would be given impossible tasks. The biggest targets worldwide. That’s why John is feared, respected and honored. Clearly he’s not above the rules but when you’ve garnered the reputation he has it’s because of the big name contracts he’s pulled. If you wanted to kill the boogeyman you wouldn’t send Marcus, or Perkins. You’d send the most feared killer of killers to do the task

Honestly? I think the gold coins count as 'favors'. Instead of keeping track of who owes who how many favors, it's been monetized. Some guy does you a favor, you give him a gold coin. He then doesn't necessarily owe it back to you, a gold coin buys you a favor from anyone, and you owe a favor to anyone who has a gold coin.

The embossed inscriptions on these coins are very interesting! Obverse: "ex unitae vires" (from the union of the forces). And there is presented the woman with shield and olive branch surround by two other olive branches. Ancient Greeks gave the wreath of olive branches to winner of the Olympics games. Today, the olive branch symbolizes peace and reconciliation. Two surround the world on the UN flag. On the reverse: "Ens cause sui" (To be a/the reason) and mistery MMI. But usually in old coins there its nombers of value. So, probably it is the value. BUT! In latin letter "M" is the one thousend, and "I" - one. So, the value can be 2001. From other hand it can be the date. It means - this coin has been stamped in year 2001. And there is a lot of simbols: A shield with the sun and proud lion in front of. Lions represent the highest power and authorithy. Shields - the defences. But sun is the simbol of God. So, authority wchih is represented by lion have got the mandat of God. Someone designed them pretty expertly!

This also adds a ton of depth to Wicks character. Think of how much time it took to earn all those coins. How many people he killed before he left the life.

I think the value of 1 gold coin is simply 1 act of service. I also don't think new assassins are refused or requested of more gold coins because that would result in disorder. Probably better to have assassins do a good and clean job with the services available than to cause the whole society to be made known to public due to poorly removed bodies, dead assassins and whatnot. Relevant services necessary for their jobs are probably "forced" to be rendered with each gold coin. While most of the vendors are willing, I think the idea of the gold coins is to facilitate those that are good at the job with easier and unrestricted access to the services needed for them to do their jobs. They probably get some gold coins along with actual money for each contract and the gold coins are most likely not allowed to be transacted or melted down. This would also make John Wick's collection of gold coins all the more impressive as that would show how many difficult contracts he has done. It would also make assassin's who slack off due to the large amounts of money have to continue their job simply because they need the services to survive in the event they become a target and the only way to get more gold coins is to do contracts. So, the moment someone gets excommunicado, they maybe just no longer have the ability to "force" any acts of service with the gold coins anymore and any vendors found to willingly provide their services are killed. So, only those who are forced by physical means or threat of life will be given a pardon.

Yes, the varied ways we consider "value" is expressed in the simple ending to the Tom Hanks role's obsession, in the film Terminal, with his father's project of gaining all the written signatures of 40 Jazz legends from a photograph in one small container. Your signature or my signature have only as much value as people accord it. Julia Roberts signs something special and you can trade it for something else. Your video would have been made that much more powerful had you been explaining the value of "Subscribers" to KZread, and "Likes" and "Views" etc in terms of monetary value. We all have blind spots. @@fahadsaeedx the high table is the Illuminati of the criminal world if you will. in this world, every criminal, and assassin are part of this organization, or club or whatever. the organization is probably worth billions of dollars, so everything is already paid for, and the coins are just your ticket to access certain goods and services offered by the high table. its not one coin for a drink, its one coin to use the bar, per person, if anything(hence why two coins were used). guns and suits? again, its the service you are giving a coin for since everything is already paid for. 1 coin per dead body means 12 coins for 12 dead bodies. so this means, as others have said, one coin for one service. you earn coins by providing a service, and you spend coins for a service, all within the table. that can make a coin worth much more than the monetary value of what you are spending it on. the crime syndicates pay for being part of the table, in return the table provides a currency for prepaid goods and services, and stability and honor among criminals. thats the best way i can put it.

Funny how my paper money, my bank card, buys all my food, pays all my bills & is never refused anywhere. Bitcoin however, is completely made up money that isn't accepted everywhere, if anywhere as legal currency. I hardly ever carry cash. Just no need. It's a penny that costs more to make than it's worth, by the way.

It doesn't make sense that one bitcoin, currently is worth around $8k and 1 oz of gold is worth$1.3k, so you can purchase something as rare and valuable as gold with worthless digital coins now. About 5 ozs of gold for some invisible digits that cost a penny back in 2009. That's ridiculous!

No such thing as "must be honored"...want to buy a something on the cheap, the seller will just say "we're closed for the day come back tomorrow", and if you come back he'll just say "it had been sold earlier" but hides the product. Same shlt happens when government dictate price controls, sellers just hide their inventory and there will be "shortages"...

Getting rid of the body isn't that hard, but I can't give out any information. I used to work for this Company and had to sign a confidentiality agreement when I went to another job. And this is the only thing I did in this line of work. Also, after the coins they work on commision. He is corrrect about half of it of it. And he is right about the person holding it and it's exclusitivity. And as a badge of personification towards this world. Again, I can't get any more specific about them without Breach Of Contract. But I can tell you this. The vending machines are not included. They take regular coins and that is one of the reasons why they have pockets.

In my and my dads headcannon, we treat the coin as a symbol of itself, and anything and everything can be done with a singular coin. As per some scenes of the film, it has some viability; and it also fits with the mysticism of the lore behind the Continental and the whole elitist hitman world of John Wick.

  • @Soyyoseguro

Your argument is invalid. The first coin John Wick gave at the Continental is a TIP because the guy from the hotel gave him information.

I honestly think that each gold coin represents an instance of service. That service can range anywhere from a simple drink to going into an area to buy guns, the minimum of each service needing a single coin and going up from there. Each gun that was purchased by John Wick constituted a single coin. If you really stop and think about it, it’s a much cleaner economic structure than the one most countries, including the United States utilize.

I suspect that the hotel makes no money at all from these coins. They are part of the overall organization. Accepting the coins is just a way of taking them out of circulation. Their funding no doubt comes from a commission on the contracts the organization oversees. Granted, if the organization seen significantly more coins coming out of a particular hotel then that hotel probably would get better funding.
