How much have we spent? Building a 50 Ft Sailboat - Ep. 339 RAN Sailing

Join the RAN Sailing crew ~ for livestreams, exclusive content & more
/ ransailing
We took a break from boat building and went up to the Swedish mountains to ski. It was so nice with the fresh, crisp cold air and so much fun to teach Vera how to ski. After 5 days we came back to Sun Hill Farm and continued the boat build.
In this video we also talk about how much money we spent on building the strongback and the temporary hull frames. And we also give you an update on the latest changes in the boat layout!
We are a Swedish family who have sailed the world since 2016 while sharing the adventures here on KZread. While we are still sailing our main focus now a days is building RAN III, a 50 ft sailboat that we are building from scratch. We post a new episode every Friday so make sure to subscribe and hit the bell to be the first to know when there is a new episode!

It's very encouraging to see the level-headedness with which you approach everything you do, how you speak about costs without sensationalism or excuse, but just stating facts. Also, it was heart warming to see the "Inspector" so bushed she crashed in the sled. I feel blessed (and a little bit envious) to be able to share your journey. Please keep up your excellent work and look after eachother. Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪.

For an ocean going boat I think the rudder and prop should be protected by a substantial skeg with the prop in an aperture in the skeg. Any small loss of maneuverability will be more than justified by greater safety.

Just a note on screws, those with non-destructive head types (not slot or Philips, but, say Torx or similar box-type head), although a little more expensive, for any large construction project, well worth the extra in terms of saving for not destroying the head during insertion (so you can later take apart better) and just for accuracy of insertion too. What a great episode, and glad you all got some skiing time in.

You should definitely keep all the wood and parts of the framework for the build, they could be made into really cool Ran memorabilia, I bet you a local wood craftsman would partner with you to make such items for sale. Something like a Ran compass clock or boat wheel clock, wall plates, knife handles, ... lots of creative items that could be practical at the same time... Really like the new layout inside and on the windows, perhaps the portholes could pick up the same angle, or somehow you could make it a motif on the boat... So happy you got a skiing trip in, now on to making sawdust!!!

Recently you published an episode in which you discussed your rollers and how you clean them and keep them conditioned for continued use. The part of the presentation where you discussed the acetone raised my caution level. Please be careful with the flammable fumes from the acetone. A KZread couple who owned a new catamaran recently posted details on how their boat accidentally burned. It involved acetone use in a restricted area, I'm hoping I don't sound too critical. I've been watching your hull lamination process with great interest because I'd like to build a boat at some point in my sailing life. For other boat builders or sailing families who may read these comments, I have the same thoughts regarding the careful use of MEK, Denatured alcohol, and maybe certain adhesive removers, as well as any buildup of airborne flammable dust. One thing I have noted in my own work with fiberglass hulls in my dry Colorado climate is that I often generate quite a static charge in wiping the fiberglass surfaces. Keep up the good work.

I understand specific information would, and should be confidential but if you could provide a general budget of what those services would cost on the open market, that would be cool to know. I've never built a boat but in my construction career I've built houses for over 25 years... roughly 60 homes so far. I don't find saving money on the expensive items as the large savings it is saving money on the items that is numerous in your projects that makes the difference. $100 off an appliance is nice and shows up quickly but buying fasteners by the pound instead of by the box will save more than double that per fastener type. Not as fancy or flashy on a report but money is money.

From a Feng Shui standpoint, you never want to have a bathroom or head opening into any food prep area. - or even a living area - hallways are best. As you can imagine the smells from the bathroom are not welcome or "good luck" if they are mixed in with food being prepared. Try to have the head entrance and exit AWAY from the galley.
