I got my horse from an auction almost 4 years ago. I payed under $500 and I really got and amazing horse. They told me she was 8 and she was about 3 so she didn’t have much training on her at all. Most of the time when you get a horse that cheap you have lots of extra expenses but she didn’t need much.

My horses were pretty expensive as they were already well trained jumpers, but my aunt got one of her horses for under 5$ from a rescue and he is literally the sweetest horse I have ever met and is better behaved then most of my horses. He is great with kids and can jump 4 feet no problem. This truly proving horses can be cheap and still amazing

Found out long ago horse pricing is nothing to do with how 'sweet' a horse is, it's more about their breeding and their training. Basically all their monetary worth is the human labour behind the horse.

I got my horse off a lady who posted an ad on FB. He wasn’t a rescue but he did have issues that essentially cost me a lot over the years, blood, sweat & tears too! however he’s 22 now and still going strong! I only paid £400 for him as a project and it was the best thing I’ve ever done! He is my soul horse and isn’t my whole world but the reason my world is whole ❤

When my sisters got a quarter horse, a painted pony came with the deal (mid 70's) with western tac. His name was Apache and because I was into my Indian heritage because my grandfather was half Micmac, I loved that pony. I was 12 and he preferred a blanket to a saddle. I would ride him all over with just a crude bridal and reins. Although he was a trikster, I loved that pony!

I had a big financial shock when I bought my first gelding, Johnny. For him I only paid £750 but after owning him a month I started noticing 'coltish' behaviour from him.. I got my vet out to examine him and found out he wasn't actually gelded at all! Both previous owners told me he was gelded AND his passport stated he was too! So I now had to pay for vets examinations, transport to and from veterinary clinic and the procedure itself (one testical was still retained). Total cost (£1600) in the first month! Huge shock and luckily I had money saved aside for emergency 😅. He's an angel now lol 🐴

Very interesting stuff. I live in Australia and have 3 ponies and 2 regular horses. We have to / choose to vaccinate against Hendra virus. We don’t have rabies here but you should be glad you don’t have Hendra. It’s passed from bats to horses to humans. Humans who get it usually die no questions asked. If a horse gets it they are put down along with many nearby horses. It’s not very common due to these extreme measures. We choose to vaccinate every year but it isn’t cheap. Along with dental work and vacation we probably spend $1500 AU every year. I think the dental work is the best thing we can do for our horses and never miss a visit. They all like the drugs the vet uses 🤠

P.S I'm still purchasing my Quarterhorse he's expensive but he's well trained and I can ride him on trails and I've been training him on barrels and pole bending he's getting better and better

My one horse is costing me 690-725 a month board, not including vet and farrier. I've seriously been considering bringing her home but we have like, maybe 2 acres. Would need to put on fencing and a run-in, plus i don't have a buddy for her so I'd either have to find a friend interested in bringing their horse to a no arena or trails land, or invest in another horse or mule, which brings in its own monthly cost. Plus, unfortunately i don't have a horse trailer which would make me pretty anxious to have her home without one... 😫😫 and i can't manage to save for all this cause shes costing at least 700 a month rn!

My $800 one was completely unbroke. He is coming along and I realized today that in another year or two he will be worth his weight in gold and I could probably sell him for more than $5,000, but I'll still be loosing money on him, lol. I completely understand. I have a mare that is stunning but she had no respect for me. She is over 16h so I became more and more intimidated of her. Not to mention I have another horse horse(gelding) who is my heart horse. I really stopped riding the mare because I wasn't connected to her. Her behavior got to the point that I considered selling her. She was getting dangerous and I have lots of children around. I finally decided to start working her in the round pen and doing ground work with her. I started watching Carson James videos and he gave me the confidence I needed to work with this mare. I have consistently worked her everyday for two weeks and the difference is night and day. Im more confident and she has become submissive to me. Actually seeking my approval. Giving respect. It has transferred to the saddle as well and now I am enjoying riding her again.

Also watch Clinton Anderson's videos. You should never let a horse boss you around as it will lead to dangerous situations..make their feet move and you will gain their respect. Begin at basics and chase them around the round yard over and over if you have to, you need a good foundation. My horse knows not to even show me her hind end and will always turn to face me (sometimes it's not ideal if I'm trying to brush her rump and she scoots her butt away, but at least she's safe).

I think there’s a pretty wide range in America. There are a lot of options for getting horses cheap through rescues, off the track, FB groups. But for this reason, I also think there’s a lot of people buying horses who really don’t have the finances to maintain them long term. Then we get a lot of cases of neglect. A well trained riding horse is usually in the low 5-figures here.

I'm always surprised to hear the vet costs quoted in horse videos. I pay $100-$200 to take my *dog* TO the vet. I could get one to come out and treat a horse for the same $?!

I’m of Mexico and your more expensive horse in here cost like 12,000$ and in Mexico at least an untrained horse in here costs 20,000$ and my horse cost 170,000 but we could buy it for 150,000$. Now you know people always buy horses in other countries
