I live in a senior housing complex in Reno, my 535 sqft studio is $541, I pay for electric, about $30 monthly, WiFi internet is $35. Everything else is included in the rent. It is owned by the Reno Housing Authority. My rent is based off my monthly income which is about $2200. As a senior I am allowed to have assets as in my retirement account, savings and checking. I am allowed to earn $78,000 a year to qualify for the apt. I have $0 debt so I'm living good in my olden years.

Hi Jaymie, I'm sorry to hear about your health issues, but type II diabetes can be easily managed. I too, have type II diabetes and I take metformin, 2 tabs twice a day. I've never been on insulin. You should be able to get your diabetes under control and not have to take insulin. The trick with this disease is it's 50% activity level and 50% what you eat. With people like us, carbohydrates will raise our blood sugar, far more than sugar. If you haven't met with a nutritionist , ask your doctor to set up an appointment for you. They will explain things like carb choices and how many you should have per meal. Read your food labels and you will be focusing on the carbs, no need to worry about the other values. Once you do this for awhile, you will get to know what foods are good for you and what are not. With metformin, people typically lose between 5 to 10lbs and that is very helpful. I became healthier after my diabetes type II diagnosis and it can be the same for you and anyone else who have this diagnosis. I just want to empathize it just takes a little more awareness in food and activity level.

Hi Steve and Jim. Yes, Palm Springs can be very affordable. I have seen very little difference in prices here, except for electricity and gas. I know gas has always been higher in CA due to taxes. Electricity is about 3 to 4 times higher than Minneapolis/St Paul. I pay my electric to the association here as they read the meters and charge us for what we used. This is a co-op and they also pay for the water. My monthly space charge is $155 per month, which is very reasonable and fair. As far as gas goes, I' don't pay much more here. I usually put in $50 in my tank every 2 weeks and I am driving more here as stores and shops are farther away for me, I have to drive into Palm Springs or the other communities as Desert Hot Springs does not offer too much. For groceries, I've been shopping Von's in DHS and the prices are usually about the same with a few things higher and even a few things lower, so it all balances out. Any ways, I am very happy here and have a better quality of life here due to the weather and so many affordable activities here. If I was back in Minnesota, right now, I'd be sitting on the couch, every single day as I no longer find it fun to fight the elements, therefor, I'm much more active here.

The cost of mobile homes/park models have pretty much doubled here in Arizona but they're still fairly reasonable. I live on a beautiful street lined with palm trees. Monthly rents are about half of what you'd pay for an apartment. Older units that are single wides are the best deal because many have a covered roof deck on one side and a car port on the other. They run around $35K to $45. On an older street they might be less. One cost here is air conditioning during those hotter months.

Hi Steve, We have found, so far, that expenses seem to "cancel" each other out between here and Florida. Gas is horrendous here as are utilities when comparing to Florida. Taxes are more here as well as car registration and car insurance. However, the cost of homeowners insurance in Florida has gotten so expensive;. Not to mention, many insurance companies are cancelling policies so it's also hard to get. All in all it's about the same to live here as it was in Florida. Since my family is still there, we are kept apprised of current costs.

Hi Steve and Jim! I think I’ll stay in Colorado! I live in a controlled apartment complex where they go by your income. My rent is roughly about $600/a month. Groceries are ridiculous and gas prices are around $2.85/a gallon. It’s a little cheaper, but with people from other states moving here it starting to drive housing prices up and wages lower, because people sell their houses for a large profit and by the housing here for a steal. Because people have bought and paid cash for their homes, they can afford to take a lower paying job. It’s a never ending cycle! Thanks for letting me vent!😊 Thank You for sharing this video with us. Hello Steve and Jim! This is a really great topic! Yes....in many cases, affordability comes from the perspective of location and/or that persons economic status. So yes, there are some components of Palm Springs that are definitely more expensive than other parts of the country. But....if one were to look carefully, they could make it happen in Palm Springs. Our condo in Palm Springs was more expensive than my Colorado home in a resort mountain town and the previous house in North Carolina combined. But, those both had been purchased pre-pandemic/crazy house price skyrocket times. So, it is kind of relative. In the 35 days to close though, there were somewhat like condos (admittedly, slight bigger, but the same bedroom/bath count) that were being listed for 17% more than ours (and there is no other condo in that complex that has the view as ours). So, ultimately, we are getting instant equity. I've only been coming to SoCal for the last 5 years; which started in my current job. As a business traveler/pleasure traveler to SoCal, I haven't felt my hotel and restaurant life there to be significantly more expense. And when I template those costs over the weather and beauty and number of things to do in SoCal, the price per smile can be cheaper in SoCal. And yes...I have felt Palm Springs to be more affordable than the western side of the mountains of SoCal such as over in the L.A. basin. Great video !! I loved the examples of utilities and such that you shared. Have a great day. PS. I live in Ouray, Colorado. If I were to use a mobile home for comparison; which truth in lending, that is what we originally planned to get in Palm Springs, there is not a mobile home in Ouray that is cheaper than $300k. I felt we could get a mid 100k-ish mobile home in Palm Springs that would have been completely remodeled and furnished. I consider these stats when advising my daughter, who is a music teacher in Ouray; and they really really struggle to make ends meet due to housing and such.

@@steveinpalmspringsca Hi there! Something I thought of while eating dinner tonight was that it probably wasn't fair to make the comment about the Palm Springs condo being more expensive than my current Colorado mountain resort house and previous NC house combined when a mobile home in my CO mountain resort town now is almost as expensive as my house in the same town a few years ago. $300k + for a mobile home is insane! And that does not include the lot rent.

Space rent was 600 the first year but now with trash and water costs is pretty close to a thousand. Hard on a fixed income. @@steveinpalmspringsca Yes, we’re thinking either Palm Springs area (maybe as far as Indio; I’ve got a cousin that retired there, and she and her husband love it), Southern Arizona, or maybe the Sacramento area. Southern Arizona has a bit of an advantage in that it’s a little cheaper + I’d still have the ability to practice law after I retire (without having to take the California bar exam.) Good morning Steve and Jim That shopping week comes around every week faster it seems. Hahaha. I was watching a program the other day and an economist said it should start reversing (cost of living) before the end of this year he said there is a cap on it. Apparently it can only go up so much. I hope he's right. I'm not much of an egg eater, but I'm seeing $8.00 dozen on some brands @ Walmart, but I did find a dozen for $5.34 free range and organic. The thing that's high I noticed are your meat products. So I make a lot of pots of soups with beans, rice. I love orzo. I make various kinds of pasta dishes. Hot and cold. You can still add lots of veggies to them. You have to watch Walmart they do price gouging on lots of things. I think they take advantage of it especially on food items. As Jim stated on the grapes 🍇 I bought 2 lbs and when the delivery came . I went to put the away the bag was ripped and 90% of the grapes(which were the purple grapes) were rotten . No kidding looked like someone took them out of the garbage. I immediately called them and got a credit. They don't check their dates on items also I've gotten so many expired dates. The bakery items are fairly priced and decent. I get their sliced Italian bakery bread, but I noticed it gets moldy quick. So I started to keep it in refrigerator,it stays a bit longer. Once again yes watch your expiration dates on things. Butter is high I was using Walmart brand, but I don't use it a lot it's now $8.58 got a twin pack I started to get land o lakes with olive oil and low sea salt it's actually very good and I make a tomato sandwich with regular olive oil and garlic I rub on my Italian bread and add sliced beefsteak tomatoes on it. Yum 😋 it's so good. If you get the chiabotta bread, toast it rub garlic and olive oil you can add sliced peppers green red or yellow. The green ones are the cheapest .83 cents each. Sautee them and put them on the bread really good 👍🏻😊. You say you don't drive a lot,but what about on your road 🛣️ trips you still do the grave sights. Do you just budget, cost of meals, food, hotel expenses. Have a wonderful day you two:-)

For example, as I live in a colder country, I am not interested in a pool that will be unused for 3/4 of the year. You have a great pool by the way and I am sure it is a must have in Palm Spring!

Hi Steve, great info in this video. We’re also planning on retiring in the desert but I’m told a pool is a must. Can you ask Jim how much it costs to run the pool pump and also to heat the pool/jacuzzi? Have you guys had any unexpected costs with the pool that a potential new pool owner like myself should know about? Thanks!

  • @steveinpalmspringsca

    @steveinpalmspringsca

    Жыл бұрын

Hi Marc, I wouldn't live in the desert without a pool. We don't heat the pool because it's exhorbitantly expensive. The spa only takes a half hour to heat up and we usually aren't in for more than an hour or two, so the cost of gas to heat it isn't really that much. It really depends on how often you use it. Until recently, gas has been super cheap, but for whatever reason, the gas company has started to price gauge like everyone else. You might be able to check for info about heating the pool, online. It's windy here and the wind sucks the heat right out of the pool. For a few years we put a solar panel over the pool. It lays flat on the water and really works well to heat the pool, but it's a real hassle to put on and take off. And once it's off, if it's windy the wind wind will cool the pool down from 90 degrees to 70 degrees in just a few hours. If you live in South Palm Springs where there is very little wind your pool will get so warm in the summer that you can't use it. In the summer our pool usually stays at around 80 degrees, even when it's 120 degrees out. Again, the wind. Springs and summer, is our windy season. Pool pumps are very efficient now and don't increase the cost of electricity much. Ours runs around 8 hoiurs a day on low and our electric bill is around $200 in the winter and $400-500 in the summer, but most of that is from the AC. If you go with a plaster pool, like ours, it needs to be replastered every 10 years or so. Prices vary. Probably $5k-10k for ours. And pool pumps need to be replaced every 5-10 years for a few thousand dollars. Hope that helps. There are so many variable that's it's difficult to give general pool price info. Like everything else, you go find affordable ways to install and maintain your pool or you can go luxury and spend endless amounts of money. There's something for almost every budget. Good luck!

@@steveinpalmspringsca OMG thank you so much for the detailed info. I had absolutely no idea about the wind cooling off the pool. I also didn’t know about South PS (pools) getting so warm in summer. This was really interesting info. I already checked about the variable speed pumps, etc. so it helps to know that the cost of gas isn’t a huge issue for pools out there. Our gas bill this month is over $160 (that’s super high for us) and we don’t even have a pool or fireplace. So I was starting to get a little nervous thinking about having to heat a pool plus heating the house and possibly even running a fireplace. Thanks again so much.

I have vegetable and flower gardens , I find it ridiculous to water grass 😆 we do save a lot on groceries when the garden is in full swing, I do catch rain water to water gardens. Water is around $65 a month, electricity/gas averages $130 mo dips around $100 in Spring and Summer. The governor is trying to eliminate state income tax in the next 3 years, that will be a plus when that happens. She is eliminating tax on retirement income currently. Hope that's the case still when we retire.

The provincial government just have people of low income like myself an extra $234.00 towards groceries that's just a one time thing. (WHICH SHOULD BE ALL THE TIME.) I live in a tent geared to income apartment my rent is very cheap $135.00 a month but others pay full market value for their apartment at just about $1000.00 a month. Other buildings they pay much, much more across the street the rent there is $2500.00 a month. Many other people pay near $5000.00. But then you have to take a look at if there is anything added on like heat and hydro. The building I love in everything is included. Other buildings they have to pay extras. I live in a disability benefits and would never be able to pay for rent in palm springs its beautiful there. I'd like to because of the weather. The rent is to expensive for me. Even though I'm Canadian I hate the snow ❄ too cold. I would like to see some of the grocery stores you have there in California come here. We do have Wal-Mart, Amazon and Costco. Oh wow, Palm Springs rentals are way more reasonable than I thought. I live in Portland Maine, which I don't think people think of as a super expensive city, but the average price of a 1br apartment is about $1800, and if your budget is under $2.5k you're probably going to be fighting with 100 other people for each apartment you apply for. I've talked to a lot of people trying to move here for jobs they've been offered but they can't find a place to live so they have to turn the job down. I'm lucky that rent control is saving my butt and I'm only paying $1200 for the tiny apartment I've lived in for 8 years. @@steveinpalmspringsca After 12yrs in the military, from a military family, I'm real clear there is no other place I'd rather live. I even lived in San Diego for a couple of years, spent some time at El Toro, and I just needed seasonal changes, and more green trees. Sure it's cheaper to live other places, but really we don't have to spend much time here inside to escape the cold or the heat. I was stationed at NAS Fallon NV, my first duty station, for a couple of years and the heat was horrible. The winters were very cold, and I got frostbite my first week there. I came from Florida (an armpit of a place to live, imo) to the desert and didn't have time to get winter gear together, and in just my light summer jacket walking to the control tower where I was working at the time, not a long walk from the barracks, but I was lucky I didn't lose parts of my ears and nose (they had started turning black)! The desert can be very misleading, I didn't realize how freaking cold it can get! SoCal has always been cheaper to live than NorCal. When I lived there I was always able to rent a house that I shared with a shipmate because it was so affordable, at least to me. If you love where you live, it's always worth the $ (or $$$$ if you will). Even though we're in two different parts of California, we're a pretty spoiled group. Although I'm not sure I could handle the heat where you are, you can only take off so many clothes before you're either arrested or burnt to a crisp.

LOL, that's how I feel about California. I guess most of us get very attached to where we live. From my experience, there's something good about almost every city in the world. They're all just different, which is awesome. On my road trip around the country last year I visited at least 100 cities that I fell in love with, including some in Texas. :-)

This past year was the first time we got up to $500 a month during the summer. Before that it was always three to $400 a month. It’s about $150 a month in the winter.

My wife and I are almost to our mid 70's [ I'll be 75 and she'll be 73 ] I didn't here any mention of this from either you or Jim Steve but we HAVE had to go on equal monthly payments for our utilities, etc. because prices vary so much during the year. Send me an email address and I can break it down to show difference.

Hi Ted, our electricity is very high in summer, but low in winter and the opposite for natural gas. We just pay whatever it happens to be each month. My mom used to do the equal monthly payments. That worked better for her. We are ok the other way. I don't use email on my KZread channels. I just communicate here in the comments section. It just gets to be too much doing both. Thanks for sharing Ted!
