I’ve always wonted to be a archaeologist

Another great topic! So interesting to hear what archaeologists are making in different areas. I have been working in CRM for a year in the U.S. and for me, the pay has worked out well, but this year I did experience lay-offs which can be difficult to navigate, especially for someone like me who is a mom, owns a house, and is not able to travel all over the place in order to find work. Like in Canada, it can be difficult to find work in the winter. I was fortunate to stay employed working on reports over the winter, but once the contracts were complete at the end of March, I was laid off. They then gave me a month-long gig in California (which I have a couple of videos about), but I have been out of work ever since. I was offered a couple of jobs, but they would have required me to leave my family for several months, or move them to a different state. In terms of pay, it was great while I was working. I have a Master's degree and started at $18.00 per hour plus $4.65 benefit stipend. They didn't supply actual benefits, this extra amount was so that you could pay for your own medical insurance, plus $50 per day per diem when we worked out of town. There was also some overtime pay. If you only have a bachelor's degree you will likely start at about $16.00 per hour. I will likely be starting another job soon, which I am told will pay even better than that.

Yeah so it's about the same as what we get here although we all have our national state health service so we don't get extra for benefits, just subs for food. Good luck with the new job!

Another great place to work for archaeologists is the military, they hire archaeologists for preservation and discovery.

Great video, archaeologist basic pay is just about what a construction worker gets paid. Thanks for great explanation.

I'm shocked at the pay archeologists make. That is just plain crazy! I worked for a traffic control company for 5 years. And we were paid per diem checks, room and board. And you mentioned certain companies you work with. So someone willing to give you over time and over time pay is a huge help. Wow! That's ridiculous! After all the time in school spent.😡 I've always wanted to be one of three things. An archeologist, an astronomer, or even a gardener. I love planting and growing things!❤

It's hard to say as I don't work there and most of my US friends are PhD students, but there should be some website with more info, I used to look at www.archaeologyfieldwork.com/AFW for Canadian jobs and they also post US ones. The US army engineer corps also used ot hire archaeologists but not sure if they do anymore. Good luck and thanks for watching!

hey i’m interested in working as an archaeologist and i live in canada. i’m fine with the wage here, but is there anything to do in the winter time? what can you do if to work even in the winter?

I worked on a project in the dead of winter, which I can't say I reccommend, it was grueling. It was also an exception to the rule most companies halt work while the ground is frozen and use the off season for post-ex and writing up reports. Once you're more experienced or have done a few seasons at a company they will probably try to find you work processing finds or writing up stuff in the office over the winter. But it's not something they do for everyone. My old coworkers used to make ends meet during the winter by working holiday jobs, usually in retail or would have a weekend gig that they could pick up more shifts of when they were available. It's not a great system but if you stick it out you will eventually find more consistent year round work. Good luck and thanks for watching!

Hi! thank you for your videos, they are very helpful! I'm from Canada and I plan on studying archaeology either in the UK, the Netherlands or Poland next year, as I can't seem to find many interesting options for studying in Canada... Is there a place you would really recommend or not recommend? As for future jobs, I was wondering if there's a way to travel a lot but in different parts of the world? For example I'm really interested in working in Asia and the Middle East, but I'm unsure if just a general archaeology undergraduate/ masters degree done in Europe will allow me to work elsewhere. Is there a more internationally based archaeology community that could allow me to find work in different countries? Or would field work only be limited to volunteering? For example, I've seen a few volunteering opportunities managed by UNESCO, but I'm unsure if I could actually get an archaeology job in such an organization. I'm sorry I have so many questions, but any advice is appreciated!!

Hi, sorry for the late reply. There are quite a lot of great universities out there, if you check out my 'Where to study Archaeology' video it should help with some of your questions about where to study. You can travel and dig around the world on volunteer projects but that can quickly become expensive, there isn't really a job where you can travel and be paid to dig all over the world, this is mostly because of visa issues, you need to be able to legally work somewhere in order to make money. The only way around this is to be based at a university somewhere and run or participate in a dig that schools ponsors somewhere else. For example, You could work for a university in America that does digs in the Middle East every year. There will be archaeology jobs at UNESCO but I'd be surprised if any of them are entry-level right out of university. Hope some of this helps, thanks for watching!

Hi, as you are from China you will probably not be able to find a job in the UK in archaeology because they will not be able to sponsor you for a work visa which you need to legally be able to live and work in the UK. If you have a differnt route for being able to stay (get married, ancestry, etc.) you shouldn't have too hard a time finding work. That being said I'm sure China has lots of interesting archaeology for you to work with! Thanks for watching!

At us in Russia a salary of the archaeologist in university 350 dollars a month for the PhD.

I'm not sure what you mean. If you're talking about digging up archaeological material on purpose then yes only archaeologists should be doing that because they should be following a due process of recording and dissminating the information they find out about that material. If you mean just digging in general, I suppose there is being a groundworker here in the UK but that is a construction job and would involve more than just digging. People who dig up archaeological material that aren't archaeologists are probably doing so illegaly to sell it on the black market and make a profit, Daesh is an example of this, they sold looted artefacts on the black market to fund their war in Syria/Iraq. Hi, unfortunately I don't know much about academia in Canada but I would think it's about the same problem as the US/UK where an over saturation of people with PhDs makes it quite competitive to get a job. Thanks for watching!

I know this is somewhat late, but I was wondering. Could I be a archaeologist and a artist? In one video you said that you might not have a permanent job, when starting out. So could I be a part time archaeologist and part artist?

Yes and no. Yes if you're really dedicated and you don't mind working weekends/nights and no if you want to do equal amounts of each job to add up to 40 hrs a week. You will not (to my knowledge) be able to find a COMMERCIAL archaeology job that only lets you work 2-3 days a week (Perhaps you could do this is other parts of archaeology but I don't know for sure). This is because these projects will have been designed/tendered on the expectation of having staff from Mon-Fri. A lot of these jobs are also time sensitive and part time work will only draw things out (even if you are only one person). What I recommend is having a 'back up job' something that is flexible that you can fall back on between contracts. I worked as a waitress at a cafe where I worked Sundays when I had archaeology work during the week and when I didn't there were shifts I could also pick up during the week to help make ends meet. If you want to do art then you would have to be happy doing it during your evenings and weekends which is fine for a while but could be quite draining. It mostly depends on how bad you want to do either and whether you're willing to sacrificce some sleep/sanity/free time to make it so. @@sharmanveraj3281 What I meant was that most of the people getting a degree in archeology or anthropology end up not working in their field because it's not a very marketable skill. If you have rich parents who can support you, then that may be ok, but if you need to pay the bills it's better to get an education with better job opportunities.

Then you get fired and arrested, you'd either go to jail or pay a hefty fine. It's not worth it! 99% of things you find on an archaeological site are of no value to anyone but archaeologists anyway.

A couple reasons.....outside of the US most people don't go into $100K of debt for school, in Canada you're looking at maybe $25K for a 4 year degree and the UK is about £30K if you're doing a 3 year degree. In Scotland if you're Scottish you get free tuition to go to Scottish universities. Beyond that, some people just really love the job, some people come from backgrounds where student debt gets paid off, and some people just work and pay it off. Typically your wages increase as you get older, just because you start at one doesn't mean that will be your wage forever, if you get promoted and work your way up the ladder you could end up on a pretty decent salary same as for many other jobs. In archaeology it just takes longer cause our graduate wages are lower, which sucks. Thanks for watching!

I mean....as far as I'm aware in today's economy a lot of jobs need a second income in the household, the days of a single income providing for the average family are over. Most archaeologists aren't looking for a super comfy lifestyle with lots of vacations and fancy cars, most of them are able to afford houses (barring places like London) it just usually takes a bit longer.

@@Inside_Archaeology you could still have a comfortable retirement if you could manage to save about five to six hundred US dollars a month in a good mutual fund with about a 10% return you'd be a millionaire in about 35 years

In the UK the company that employs you legally has to sign you up for a pension if you're a permanent employee and you can decide how much you want to put into it, which your employer matches up to a certain extent. So once people get a permanent job after a few years they do start saving for retirement.

Hi Rachel! I wish the conditions in Portugal were that good. I understand that the conditions you mention may not be the greatest, but there are places where it's much worse. In Portugal an archaeologist working for a company is usually in an illegal situation, we are paid around 10,000€ per year and about 55% or more goes to taxes. Yearly! We are left with about 5000€/year to survive, especially considering the rent and other bills, not to mention food. Working full time... some times even extra hours... We have no work conditions or minimum wages, so most of us can only survive by living with our parents, we earn way less than the national minimum wage. Some of us choose to go to other countries and some just give up... It's a hostile area to be in, even though I love my job.

@@Inside_Archaeology Hi Rachel! The archaeologists who are lucky enough to work for the State earn more or less 1200€ before taxes. The archaeologists who are lucky enough to be actually hired by a company earn more or less 900€ before taxes. They are paid 14 wages per year (12 months plus Christimas and vacation). The national minimum wage in Portugal is currently 665€, 14 times in a year. The vast majority of archaeologists in Portugal are actually fake freelancers. We work for companies but we are not hired by them, but the working conditions is as if we were employed. So this creates an illegal situation, both for the archaeologist and the company. But there is no oversight of this. As a freelancer, we can't make more than 12500€ per year, in order to stay exempt of two of three taxes. As we have to discount to Social Security (always obligated to discount), IRS and VAT, pretty much 55% to 65% of the yearly income goes to taxes. And of course, we have to work the entire year in order to bring home 12 wages, if we take a month vacation like a regular employee we only bring home 11 wages... There is no regulation to make companies actually hire everyone that are needed to work, so they always compete to give people the lowest fees for the vast responsability an archaeologist actually has, and as they don't have to hire, they don't have to think about the taxes they have to pay, as this is a problem for the "freelancer". I used to bring home about 500€ every month after taxes, which is humiliating. Since then, I have raised my fees! We can only hope the situation will improve!
