HOW MUCH Did My Van Build COST? | Tiny Camper Van Conversion COST BREAKDOWN

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video, I'll be going through cost breakdown of my recent Nissan NV200 van conversion. Having recently released a start-to-finish time lapse film of the van build, I thought it might be interesting to see how much I’ve spent on the conversion, and this is something that up until this video I didn’t even know, and I was quite surprised by the amount…

---
The aim for the van build was to do it as cheaply as possible, but without sacrificing on quality. In other words, I didn’t want to spend a lot of money, but wanted to have a really nice looking van at the end of it, easy right?! I undertook all of the work myself and was able to spend a lot of time getting it how I wanted it, albeit over the course of about a year. I’ll let you judge whether I achieved the quality I was after, but I feel very pleased with the outcome.
It’s also worth bearing in mind that I don’t live in the van, and use it as a day van - sleeping in it around 30 nights a year, so I’ve tailored the build towards my needs.
I’m putting the figure from each section in the running total so we can see how it adds up as I go along.
I’ve tried really hard to recall everything that went into the build, so I apologise in advance if I’ve missed anything.
The last thing to note is I’ve rounded my numbers to the nearest pound just to make it a bit easier to look at.
The van costing covers all aspects of the van build;
- Insulating the van
- Carpeting the van and doors (I bought 15 metres for all four doors)
- Making van door pockets
- Plywood lining and carpeting the ceiling
- Covering the plywood floor with vinyl
- Building the van bed
- Adding under bed can storage
- Installing a blackout curtain
- Building a wheel arch storage box
- Building a folding table storage side unit
- Building a cupboard behind the driver's seat
- Installing roof bars
- Van electronics (lighting, power, refrigeration)
- Making thermal blackout window covers
Adding essential can accessories: the ceiling net, tarp for the back door, folding step, water bottle, wind deflectors and coat hooks.
If you made it to then end of the video then you'll see I’m really happy with the final figure, and building the van out over the course of a year has definitely helped spread the cost.
Is it cheap, or did I spend too much? I’d love to know what you think, so do leave a comment below.

I love your channel, because you don't overdo things and obviously keep an eye on the costs, which is what most people want when they start with building a camper van. The editing of your videos is also great. Calm and not too boring, but detailed enough. Cheers from Germany, hope to see many more of your videos!

Thanks so much for the breakdown. I'm just at the beginning of my van-built adventure, having purchased a Nissan e-NV200 earlier this month. It's always encouraging to see others who have committed more time and less cash to builds, and I think it really shows in the overall design of the conversion. I have a budget of £2,200 but that includes adding in a sink, electrics and paying someone to install my skylight window (thank you for helping me to decide whether that was a necessary expense 🤣).

Thanks so much for your video. Very good, I didn't see a lot of builds with the plastic rectangular storage buckets but I was thinking before that they are a very simple idea. No need for traditional cabinets in there imho. The bed is very good. However, I'd require water storage, grey water, and solar plus batter, converter, charge controller. Usage would be full time. Some little things I'd do like I heard putting vents int he back door will allow air to pass over a sleeping person and cool them nicely with the fan running pulling in air. I'd want a heater. I don't see that on your build. Windows that open for a breeze would be nice. An insect net for an open sliding door would be nice. I'd have to cook with a microwave or stove. I have a bread maker. Nice to be able to use. I'd want a swivel passenger seat and possibly also driver seat with a table for that. Swivel installation is more expensive. I saw a guy bought a unit for like 110 pounds. He took a lot of time to install it and needed help from mechanically inclined friend. Having that comfortable drivers seat to do my work on a laptop, that would be awesome.

Everyone definitely has a different take on their van build - all those things definitely depend on the size of your van and how often you intend to sleep in it. For my usage they just wouldn't be worth the money, however for many they are 👍

Yes absolutely, I don't think you'd need to adapt it too much for a weekend camper, as I've got means for cooking and refrigeration, but I'm sure there might be a small additions along the way. Certainly the main layout and function of the camper would accommodate weekend camping 🙂

I was guessing £3-£4k for your complete fit (not that I've any idea at all!) You made all it look so easy too. Did you buy your van empty, or did you have to strip it out, and how much would a van similar like this cost in its raw state, please? Sorry to ask, but Im a complete 'newbie wannabe a campervan owner' lol xx

Thanks, it was at pre-covid prices though, which definitely helped! When I bought the van it was ply lined, so just removed all that and started from scratch. I don't know whether the van market has become a bit more stable yet, but I should think £8000-10000 would get you a decent van. There are cheaper (and more expensive!) options out there of course 😊

An absolute bargain! You (so far) don't have any cooking stove, kettle for tea, or coffee prep? This really shows that a van can be done on a budget but still look the part.

Thanks David! I've got my stove in part 2 of the folding table video, and the kettle/gas/coffee are in my draw dividers video 🙂

@@LensOfJames Perhaps I should watch in the correct order rather than randomly jumping into videos I think interesting. Binge watching all of them this wet weekend.

@@LensOfJames . My mistake: I divided when I should have multiplied. Still, an excellent price tag. And I really enjoyed your video, too.
