06:29 That old styled manual chisel work sure takes me back. My Dad was a carpenter and his chisel and planing work was legendary. He told me he loved making boxes and cabinets to put stuff in, just so he could do that sort of work. I'd like to think if my Dad was still around he'd be watching your videos Scott.... You mix new tech with old tech quite well....

That's the thing I noticed coming back to NZ from the UK - you can either get cheap or expensive, but it's very hard to get stuff that's mid-priced. And that's across the board: clothing, furniture, homewares, hardware etc. Plus, the expensive is really expensive - we're paying much more that we need to for quality / fancy stuff. Still got great beaches, though, so it's not all bad 😁

Hi, Scott. I really cannot recommend those solid brass door handles, especially if they are not clear coated. The brass gets discolored or all over of spots from skin touches over time. Personally, I would prefer handles of other metal with some coating, imitating brass or nickel. They are good looking, lasting and way cheaper.

My advice for getting back into it as an adult - you're never too cool for a helmet, crash pads, and crash shorts. I could have avoided a broken arm if I'd consistently worn my wrist guards. Don't let the fall discourage you though! It's still sooo much fun!

That is the thing with New Zealand, expensive, everything is so expensive. Well that is if you want descent quality. We are installing a new kitchen with new appliances, the kitchen is from mitre 10 and that wasn't bad but it's when buying the new fridge, oven etc it adds up quickly even the bench top is not cheap. I'm not as confident as you Scott in building it from scratch, but I am installing it. Factor in new Gib board, plastering, coving, paint, plumbing, gas pipe, luckily the only thing I can't do is the gas but just buying all the other stuff wow the price adds up pretty quick.

Hi, I know exactly how you feel about your kitchen knobs. We decided to update our 20 year old kitchen to make it more practical. No worries, right? Well, thanks to some German technology, meticulous planing and a dedicated team we got nearly what we wanted and could afford. Now six years later I have noticed that the chrome plated handles of the doors under the sink and the ovens the chrome is peeling of! Well, no worries, contact the installer, no reply. So change six bad ones for six good ones out of the 32 handles installed, I can do that. Checked on line, visited six Auckland supplier’s, no trace of this type of handle! The thought of replacing 32 handles at $10.80 + GST each is an area of expenditure I don’t want to go down. Result? Do nothing, still thinking about it as doing nothing is cheaper but more stressful! Oh, the old handles never sold on TradeMe, the hinges and runners were nearly given away! When you add up the expense you wonder why you even bothered! Cheers mate. Harera

@@korycoster3586if a machinist had made them it would be a fair enough price, but I bet its round bar bent and polished and only touched by humans between being bent and the polishing machine

Keep in mind that a New Zealand Dollar is $0.59 USD. While it’s still a touch expensive, they also have to import/ship everything as well. Although, I think they mentioned that was pre-shipping.

Don’t put on those handles! Just add a push to open mechanism so it can stay clean and beautiful.

That intro though. The 411 graphic hit the nostalgia button hard. The memories.

I noticed that little homage straight away, that was very clever. You guys should have come to Melbourne, it's much better than Sydney. The coffee and and little alley ways you can go and eat at are next level.

Scott, when you flipped that header to glue it up my first thought was “don’t put that in upside down now!” - ask me how I know 🤦‍♂️

Scott, on your open “pantry” cabinet, I once built a unit that was 24”deep x36” wide x 80” tall. It was built with 4ea. 80” piano hinges. Both the 16” wide doors incorporated 4” deep adjustable shelving , there was a center full height verticle partition with a beefy face edging (1 1/2”x1 1/2” face with the partition let in 1/2”). The two swing out center shelving units were double, back to back units that were 10” deep (two 5” units back to back) consisting of a 1/4” fixed center divider and all adjustable shelving, both hung on piano hinges. The center 180 degree swinging units open to reveal a backset of 36” wide floor to ceiling adjustable shelves about 8”-10” deep. I’m sorry, this may be confusing. I could send a sketch, or discuss further, if you ‘re interested. This unit is very accessible, versatile and can store a whole lot !
