Shortly before Nelson became president, he gave a conference talk about keeping the sabbath day holy. He summarized it by saying "Make the sabbath day a delight." That's when I stopped going to church on Sunday.

I just got into an argument with an active member about whether or not the church requires tithing for worship. She was like, the church doesn’t force you to pay. I was like did they change the temple recommend interviews? You have to pay tithing to go to the temple. She was like, not if you lie to the bishop during your interview. I was floored. I never even considered lying to the bishop to fake being worthy for temple attendance.

doesn't that defeat the whole worthy/holiness requirement. Lie to the Bishop, really?

This seems like a very common tactic among people who are currently in and refuse to see how the church harms people with it's never-ending demand for perfectly following all the rules. Afterall the church isn't harmful if you just ignore the rules and lie about it to your fellow mormons.

People are not perfect, bishops might not know if they’re lying. Also paying a tithing is completely up to you. Attending to the temple is something sacred that requires sacrifice and a deep understanding of what it means. And tithings are used to build temples and help members. That is why they ask about it

  • @HomestarJr

@@arielacalderon2105 this was a story about a believing member of the church who claimed you don’t have to pay tithing to go to the temple because you could lie to the bishop in a temple recommend interview. Temple attendance is not free for honest members of the church because it requires a full tithe. If you have a job, and you want to attend the temple, it is required to pay a full tithe. I paid a full tithe for 42 years and attended the temple religiously hoping for light and knowledge that never came. How dare you imply I haven’t sacrificed enough for a deep understanding of either tithing or the temple.

As someone who recently left the church (5 months ago)(pimo, currently in laurels/young womens) and was born into/grew up in the church, on the girls' side of things they absolutely still push the multiply and replenish the earth commandment, but in a more subtle way. They're not as up front about it as they used to be, but you'll hear phrases in young women's like "When you have kids" or "Once you're a mom" and of course there are people who talk about how much they love their kids and being a parent in sacrament meeting. I have ~28 first cousins on my mom's side (my grandparents converted during their early marriage) because my grandparents had 9 kids and 7 of them have children of their own - and there are plenty of jokes about how many great-grandchildren there will be.

i think the thing that i got stressed about the most was "read the scriptures daily" because my parents specifically were always emphasizing it. Like, it's one of the biggest things that I'd feel like a 'sinner' about, just because I struggle so much to keep a daily habit, including, y'know, reading a book that was comparatively really boring (I've prefered fantasy my whole life lmao)

This really opened my eyes to how my family was more Mormon then most. and my parents still are. To this day they never swear, never drink tea/coffee and hardly drink caffeine, NEVER watch rated R movies. Never work/ shop/ go out on Sunday. Always wear garments. that isn't even an option. my dad was excommunicated during my childhood and him wearing regular boxers were so degrading for him. once he got rebaptized they probably burned the devils undies. There has not been a single time my parents didn't pay tithing. Even when they had nothing tithing and fast offerings was top priority. it's crazy how many were 10 for me. that now have no hold on my life.

I absolutely find being a "Utah Mormon" is so different than living elsewhere. I absolutely knew about all of these teachings. Anyway: it's great that teenagers aren't being told it's selfish to not get married and begin having children immediately out of high school as much as they used to be. In curious if the recent news attention on how rich the church is has influenced members' answers on how important tithing is. I don't know if you or your followers would go for it, but an anonymous Google poll where you could break down the answers by age or by those who have and haven't yet gone through the temple would be very interesting.

What fun to hear more pronouncements by Cree-L Kofford. He was our regional rep when we lived in Riverside, CA-- a VERY colorful guy. I loved him because he was so entertaining. He proclaimed that mothers should not work outside the home. Even if the couple had to live in a tent, and even if their parents had to support them, the wives should NOT be leaving their homes to get jobs. Incidentally, my in-laws apparently bought this doctrine and subsidized our marriage until we were 40.

I was told by a seminary teacher that Stairway to Heaven played backwards contains satanic messages. He went as far to say that Robert Plant purposefully sang the words off just enough to make them convey the evil message when played backwards. He insisted "There's still time to change the road you're on" was sang as "There's still time to change the road you're awww". Yet I could never figure out how that little change would have helped. He never explained it any further. He felt evil spirits when listening to the song, and that's all he needed to know. He was 100% cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs, and looking back, I wish somebody would've changed the road he was awww.

In the 2010s I was taking the lessons from missionaries. For the sake of transparency I told them that I was going to an Indian casino in a nearby state. One guy said that the church may not endorse that, the other guy looked at him and asked, "Is that command of the prophet?" and laughed. We never talked about it again, and I went to the casino. And yes, I played Blackjack.

I love your videos, very similar experience. I’m not sure if you’ll see this, but I was wondering: Has anyone ever messaged you and said that your videos made them ask difficult questions? Not people who were already questioning, but directly started to ask questions because of your content. I think you do an amazing job of being very articulate and fair. I am biased of course haha. I want people to question! Haha.

@@timnewman1172 We should know soon. Martin Luther didn’t like the pay to play policy of the Catholic Church. Now that some of the Saints know that they starve to tithe to be worthy while the church is full of greed (a deadly sin), it should cause a split. I know I’m only being hopeful. So many religions preach about helping those in need while hoarding at the top.

I had never heard the term "Face Cards" until I was in the MTC in 2003. I didn't know what it meant. My mom played solitaire for hours with a full deck of cards, we played spoons, even some poker with the penny jar. It blew my non Utah-mormon mind that people thought these things were banned.

When I was a BYU student in the early 1970s, S. Kimball came out in General Conference against hunting for sport. Famous Mormon (ex-Mormon?) political cartoonist, Pat Bagley, at the time was also a BYU student, and did the political cartoons in the campus newspaper, the Daily Universe. His cartoons were the rage on campus, and every day we all couldn't wait to see what he would have next. After the above-mentioned conference, Bagley did a cartoon in the Daily Universe which depicted a deer hunter (with his hunting cap, rifle, and plaid coat) standing there with a deer, and both had the "Conference Report" open and were both reading it. The deer says to the hunter, "Now let me show you my favorite part here . . . " The hunter was depicted as having a disappointed look on his face. We all gaffawed. But I still went hunting.. If you look up Kimball's anti-hunting conferecne talk, this Bagley cartoon shouldn't be too hard to find in the Daily Universe archives.

I remember meeting with the missionaries and they kept hating that I was asking about them believing in multiple gods(God head), becoming your own God, and no alcohol. I was shocked with them saying that wine in the Bible was grape juice and their book of mormon saying wine. They have also heavily been focusing on them believing the same things as Christians. They also try to say Catholics and Mormons are the same. Sorry for the rant, but I feel bad for the missionaries because they have to look happy, but knowing that they are struggling. It is hard to see them because I know they are just young adults and have not really experienced the world and are told to move far away from everything they know. Anyways I hope that all members wake up. I love your channel exmolex. I also thank you for not showing your kids. My parents have the same beliefs and I appreciated it. So I am sure your kids will appreciate you protecting them. Thank you for your channel.

to give context to the prophets speaking out against hunting for sport: market hunting used to be a huge thing in the 1800s united states and western territories with white men going out and shooting hundreds and thousands of whatever moved, sending animals like the passenger pigeon and the great auk right into extinction and critically endangering others like bison that indigenous groups had safeguarded before their forcible expulsion, all in the name of manifest destiny and god providing a land of plenty for them to use as they saw fit. joseph f smith probably was being more descriptive than dramatic in his depiction of sport hunting of the day

I'd love to see a breakdown of ratings by age group if there was a way you could do that. Also, considering how some LDS youth seem to have become more supportive of LGBTQ+ recently, I'd love to see polls with specific questions about LDS views of queerness. It's crazy because most of them I was taught that they were really bad.. Gambling and R rated movies might have been lower on my list though.. I play gatcha games which is basically child-legal gambling and my grandparents always would say how they wished to find the lottery card on the street. R rated movies I was always taught they were horrible and bad and we would listen to John Bytheway talks on how bad R rated movies were but... When the first demon slayer movie came out as rated R my uncle convinced my dad that there was no reason for it being rated that way and we were allowed to watch it. As for TV shows me and my mom watch supernatural together. The first few seasons were rated tv-14 and when the rating switched to M we just kept watching. (I also would watch M rated anime without batting an eye... In secret but still.) Eating meat sparingly and playing cards were never talked about it's crazy.

I've always loved playing cards. A lot of Christian churches are scared of playing cards. Playing cards are simplified tarot cards, which is why many people are nervous of cards. Many people have been harmed by the misuse of tarot. In learning the tarot, I'm becoming able to read using playing cards. As a kid in the mormon church, I was taught about the things which would make you likely to become possessed by an evil spirit. These include, playing cards, tarot, taking drugs, mixing with sinners, you name it.
