old school 90's glamour

I like that Mark features his videos on KZread, but lighting is never a fixed configuration for portraits. Some of the greatest work happens with a single light source and good chemistry with a subject. The great equipment also helps.

Why would you use a beauty dish, grid and then the diffuser. That would negate the grid. You would need to use the grid after the diffuser if you want to control the light direction wouldn't you?

That was probably just a mistake in the order of the diagram. I'm sure he used the grid over the diffuser.

The way the softlight/ beauty dish is made, you can't use the grid over the diffuser; the grid sits inside the lip of the dish, while the diffusion sock fits over the outside edge.

Ll G it works with the diffuser on the inside. The pressure you apply to make it all fit will vary depending on the size of the sock, but it works.

People also use the grid inside then the diffuser over it, though. It does take away some of the concentration of light but not all of it. But if you want very focused light but still soft you’d need to put the sock on first then the grid.

The 5 light set up you can get it done with three lights. Two side light you can use 7" reflectors or softboxes and the beauty dish or a silver reflective umbrella in front. To control the background lighting use the front light further from subject to increase background lighting.

Only if you know how to use said camera. Doesn't matter how fancy or expensive a piece of gear is, if you can't shoot worth shit, your pictures will STILL most certainly look like shit.

You know shit. I can get shots like this with my fuji GFX and off camera flash. You don't need a phase one.

When you are shooting this type of work, the faster you can move from look to look, set to set is important. You may only have minutes to do the job, and while you may be experienced, you won’t do the job faster than four experienced people.

googo151 Trust me, I do photography and at least one assistant maybe 2 works. I’ve done a lot of shoots alone but changing backdrops if I’m in studio or if I’m on location... an assistance comes in handy.

step one, get the light equipment. step two, get a hassleblad.. unless you're totally awesome cuz in that case you can just do it with your iphone and some free camera app right..

Anyway, doing things like using fills/bounces and ring flashes are going to be around for (young) photographers to use for a long time to come...

You're missing my point (duh): You complain that the old dudes need to make way for the young guns (fair enough, as new voices in the arts are usually accomplished by younger artists who break the rules established before them), yet you use as your example two (now) old dudes to make your point...which is contradictory...if you're so keen on seeing the younger photogs who don't have "50 thousand dollar Hasselblads" to play with, then cite some cogent examples...you could start by digging into the new generation of fine art photogs breaking all sorts of rules (who graduated from UCLA Arts, or Bard, or a ton of other places), and are truly radicalizing the metaphysics of photography...but, to just sit there and b****h that the old cats need to step aside without any justification other than it annoys you that you are made to watch videos of "old dudes" sharing their professional knowledge makes you sound like laughable fool.

Lol. First off, being an MFA graduate of UCLA Arts myself, I can assure you that all of the students are not "rich", and we all got a ton of financial support because of this fact...But, all of this is irrelevant to the topic at hand: which is, give some examples of young guns whose videos we should be watching (or you'd like to see), if you are going to complain about the "old dudes" who are already established and seem to have first dibs on eyeballs on KZread. It doesn't make any sense to complain about the changing of the guard when you use examples that are culled from the very "old guard" that you wish to see move aside.

The images are just average. The reason they seem to be better is because of the icon in the image. Remove Lenny and it’s an uninteresting studio shoot.
