From Forensic Photography to Fine Art Portraits: The Versatility of the Ring Flash 📸 😮

The Ring Flash is an integrated lighting modifier that is attached over the camera lens. It creates a unique lighting effect with frontal illumination and shadowy backgrounds.
It was popular in the '80s and '90s for fashion and macro photography, as well as in forensic photography. The ring flash can be used to fill in shadows and reduce lighting density in animal portraits. It produces high contrast and a halo-like glow around the subject.

Lighting is very personal. There is no bad light, just different light. Ring lighting is a valid light source like any other. I actually love it.

I’ve used a ring flash off-axis and on-camera many times for fashion and beauty shoots, the images are always captivating. But then again, I’m an 80’s fashion photographer.

Ring flash is really interesting! We see loads of it in the “influencer” space these days for video but I didn’t realize it was more popular in the past. Great video as always!

The most striking difference for me is the lack fo shadow on the neck with the ring- very appealing!

Always nice to see when you have a new video. You're one of the few true professionals on KZread. I have a ton of modifiers but never owned a ring flash because, like you, I never liked the look. I think they make people look like those paper doll cut-outs little girls play with. Thanks for the video.

Personally these only kind of work if used really close to the subject so the ring cast is more the size of the eye pupil and has that unique reflection. Same principle with macro where it becomes a much bigger light source relative the tiny subject. It's just a big hard light in any other instance.

Ringflash such as the one show in the video can be used at a distance, as I’ve done many times.

Working a lot with ring flashes (Godox AR400 and Wallimex model) in photogrammetry. We are working in cross polarisation to avoid reflexion and work at 1/200 sec (more rapid than just with a ligh on a tripod at 1/30). Does it exists at your knowledge ringflash speedlight (more than 1/200) able to carry easily a polarising filter ? Many thks Karl for all your videos, they are inspiring our team in some good maner in our work and a tons of informations about equipment.

Hi, thank you but to answer your question first of all I need to understand why you think the shutter speed is important here? When using flash a shutter speeds only real importance is to remove any existing ambient light such as daylight or interior lighting, we only use slow shutter speeds such as 1/30th with flash if we deliberately want to blend some of the existing ambient light with the flash light.

@@VisualEducationStudio thks Karl. As I said we are using it in photogrammetry to have an eaven light on object and the possibility to make cross polarisation to avoid réflexions. WE ARE working in manual mode at 1/200 f11 (with 35mm) because we are shooting walking around the object or are using continuons tuntable, so its a gain in shooting Time and a way to have pictures without motion Blur and also a easier way to détour the object.

  • @VisualEducationStudio

Hi, it's not super glue it's just hot glue guns which set hard but peel off relatively easy.
