What I feel Adam(the dad) is saying in these quotes (as far as I can tell) is "If my kids can't safely swim with these mermaid tails, then it isn't safe for ANYONE to use" and that seems really counterproductive, it's almost like he's blaming the product and not the use, circumstances, or lack of preparation and research on his part... You would think he'd research more on these tails after an incident so that his daughters can learn to use them safely instead of deeming them dangerous and un-usable

Have held off on getting my mermaid obsessed niece a monofin or tail until she had completed all her swimming lessons and demonstrated she understands water safety. That being said, our family would never leave her unattended in a pool while wearing a tail skin. And chose to purchase one from the company you highlighted in your video because of their extensive safety info geared for children. Thank you Courtney for being passionate, but calm and sensible about this subject.

This is a parent who's child begged him for a mermaid tail her friends have one so its fine right? Assumed it was a regular toy and left it at that. Kiddie pool or not don't leave your kids unattended near gathered water. Blaming the tail is pointing fingers and not owning up to the mistake made. Thanks for this video Courtney I feel like this needs to be brought into the spotlight. Mermaid tails are as safe as the proper habits you have while in one.

This drives me crazy. I know my kids swimming abilities. The FIRST THING I DID was teach them how to get out of the monofin... then let them swim with the mono only. Theyre still stuck on step two because they havent proven to be quite strong enough to go long periods of time with just the mono. Until they do they dont get to wear the skin. It should really really be common sense. I HATE these parents that buy these, their kids have an accident because of THEIR lack of vigilance and due diligence and blame everyone but themselves!

My good friend's daughter only had a monofin for the longest time. She only recently was proven strong enough to get a child Fantasea fin and tail skin. Now they swim together and it's adorable, but it took a long time for her to prove she could do it.

I'm not trying to be mean or suggest the father in question is a bad parent, but I feel it needs to be said: this entire situation was preventable, and it's not mermaiding that's at fault. He should have a) bought a tail from a good, safe company like FinFun, b) made sure his daughter wasn't going to act irresponsibly, because she's a child who may not know better, and c) watched his daughter. I don't care how shallow the water is, you watch your child so they don't get hurt. It is not fair to us adult mermaids and parents who keep their children safe while wearing mermaid tails to condemn it, because he was irresponsible.

Caspian Odinsson I feel that I have to add, as an unsupervised kid she could have just as easily brought a makeshift tail such as a towel into the water to pretend and gotten tangled up or run into trouble in another way. If you take a step back the tail was there but the tail wasn't the real problem here. Now if the tail had gone up her torso and fit poorly, being to tight and causing breathing distress or something? I could see blaming the tail BUT that would be a problem of that knock off specifically and parent not checking fit which would bring us back around to everything Courtney talks about in this video. I think the desire to blame the tail stems from the dread that could come from admitting this could have just happened without special any special circumstances. Its the same as conspiracy theories. There can be comfort in setting sights on something specific rather than admitting that sometimes things can just go wrong in horrible ways. Sometimes one small act like leaving one kid to watch another turns out to be the mistake that leads to the unthinkable. Its a lot easier to blame the tail you bought the kid then to worry about the fact something just as bad could easily happen again and is it safe ever leaving them alone? The worry could crush you, but if its the tails dault you have control. Just keep it away from the kid and hell you can even feel good by "helping" others to know of the danger.

Thanks Courtney for speaking out about this topic in a way that is WELL EDUCATED and as kindly as possible. I appreciate that you maintained your composure and spoke eloquently, while driving home the gravity of the situation and the huge impact that one person's negligence can have on an entire community. It is unacceptable for children (and also sometimes adults) to swim unsupervised. It really breaks my heart that pools don't allow the use of tails and even just monofins in some cases near me because it means that these people will just find somewhere else to swim, even if it means no lifeguard is watching out for them. All because someone didn't do their research and take swimming safety seriously.

I'm from new Zealand, in my city they have banned mermaid tails in all council pools since 2014 because of a vidoe that came from America of a young girl getting stuck under water in a tail. It upset me because the council explained how it was safer to use tails in home pools and not public ones, which is so incorrect, but I've basically been saying the same thing you are saying here. Mermaiding is a risk aware hobby meaning you must be aware of any and all risks involved and understand how to safely prevent them or what to do if they happen.

Are you comfortable using a monofin? Or would you be keen to take a course or get some coaching in the pool before even attempting an underwater photoshoot or video?” Most just back out and get overwhelmed after realising it takes effort, practice and investment to be safe and have fun in one

I do think he saw these little kids with them on and thought, ‘oh, this is a fun toy! It seems safe since these kids are using it!’ And didn’t think about how it could be dangerous. And then he’s saying that because his child got stuck in it, it must be super unsafe for everyone. I got my first tail when I was 9, and I had no problems. But that’s because I had supervision, I had done swimming lessons, I was responsible. And I didn’t even have a good tail. I had a fairly cheap, nockoff tail with a fin fun monofin. It is almost entirely his own fault.

So I do not have the experience of a full tail, but either way; Adam's daughter should have used the tail as it was supposed to be used. But I'm also very grateful that she survived. I am so happy that Fin Fun has all the safety rules, It's so concerning to see people using tails as toys, because they are not. Yesss preach, always be safe!!! Safe is number 1 rule, aesthetics and looks and stuff can come after. I am a 14 year old whos been doing swim for 9 ish years now and I recently got my first monofin and tailskin [I got the luna btw because u and everyone else seems to have so much praise for it I needed it] and I only got them after I did 3 years of research, yeah. 3! Whole! Years! And I still havent swum with my tailskin on yet! Even though I've swam from 9 years and I've done read all about safety I still havent swam with the tailskin in case something happens. So if someone like me didn't put their tail on immediately and just hop into the water. No little kid should, especially without an adult! Everything is dangerous if done incorrectly! Mermaiding can be super fun and safe if done correctly!

I felt bad for this guy at first, because I can absolutely see how someone could let their guard down around two feet of water, thinking it's so shallow their kid couldn't possibly drown. Then I got mad when his takeaway was 'these mermaid tails are dangerous', because that made it clear to me that for everything that happened, this guy learned absolutely nothing. No 'I should have watched them closer' or 'I should have made sure they understood basic water safety, like the fact that you should probably not completely bind your arms while in water', just 'this product that she was clearly using completely incorrectly is far too dangerous'. You could kill yourself with a string bikini if you use the top half to tie up your arms and the bottom to tie up your ankles, then jump in water, but you wouldn't say that anyone with a string bikini shouldn't get near water if such an incident were to happen, because everyone would acknowledge that the person using the product was clearly using it incorrectly.

Most of the time parents who are grieving blame anything but themselves. The child is ultimately their responsibility, and when their lack of it ended up in having their child die, they dont admit it. And instead of them trying to reflect and even consider the fact it could be their fault, they get angry at anything other than themselves. That doesnt mean that they can blame everyone else for their shortcomings and mistakes though, and it also hurts themselves in the long run, too. Even just, being AROUND water is dangerous. Anything that requires experience and practice in the water? Even more so.

They don't think of themselves in say a fin and give thought to what that might actually be like and what risks come with it. Same with situations or activities or events. The number of times Ive seen a parent but there little toddler in the cart at the store still completely bundled for the cold outside then stripe their own coat and hat while leaving the little one to bake. Half way through the store the kid starts really fussing and Im thinking no wonder while the parents acts like they are the one being difficult. Too often the reason seems to be "I didnt think" but instead of accepting that they still go on. Ot really thinking about it. But kids are "kids" and there for other and so some reason this creates a detachment. Im pretty sure if dad had thought about what it might be like to be a kid and be in a fin he would have seen problems pretty quick.

You explained that situation really well, gotta pull my hat to that! I'm just about to start mermaiding and for me, safety is the most important thing and I am thankful that you make so much content on this topic because, as always in every sport, there are some people out there, that have the security aspect not in mind (to take on of your examples in the video: horse riding, maybe even without helmet). Thank you for being such a good example and role model for how to approach this hobby safely! Btw: without your video I wouldn't even have known about this specific incident (maybe bc I live in germany and I am just getting into the mermaiding bubble at the moment)

I recently got myself a mermaid tail, and whenever I talk to my family and friends about it I make sure to mention safety and the safety features of the tail. I also always mention the fact that if somebody wants to use a tail, they must first be able to confidently swim unassisted without using any tail or monofin. I think safety is super important, but banning tails doesn't make it safe. You make things safe by creating rules and providing necessary training. Driving a car can be very dangerous but we made safety features like seatbelts, and rules about staying on a certain side of the road, as well as ensure that new drivers receive the proper training and pass a test before being able to drive. I really agree with the things you are saying in this video, safety is very important, and it is often the wrong usage of the product that is dangerous, not the product itself.

It's always like that, someone gets hurt due to low/non-existing safety precations, and it's the product that gets the blame, not the user of the product. It doesn't matter if it's a monofin/mermaid tail, fireworks, sport equipment or what have you... I have confidence in my swimmingabilities and I know my own limitations, but even I dont swim unsupervised or for extended periods of time in my Mahina and I'm 33! Yes, mistanke happen but YOU NEVER LEAVE A CHILD UNSUPERVISED NEAR WATER! He could have told the son to wait to make the guacamole until the girls were done bathing, or gotten another adult to help the son or watch the girls... I'm the mother of a 4-year old boy and I'm not a helicopter-parent by any means (he gets to experience cuts and bruices by climbing and biking and whatnot) but near water I'm like a hawk...

I do the hobby also since a longer time and I would not know how I would get my hands in my tail while correctly wearing it that I would not get them out anymore. I could only guess that the tail in question was non fitting (too large) so it could go over the chest (usually the end at the waist). I swim even in open water alone but I am very experienced in that and I would not recommend that to people who are new to the hobby. I am not doing any risky stuff without a buddy - for example maybe down to -5m. Beginners should start in a shallow pool until they are safe in floating, dolphin kick etc. and when they are ready, they should go to a deeper pool before open water. I don't care if the intermediate step just with the monofin is done or not. You can just start with how to get out of your tail and monofin. In my case the easiest way is pulling the tail down with the thumbs and then open the heel straps.

Mermaid tail or otherwise, you never, NEVER leave your children in/near water (be it a 6 inch deep kiddie pool or a 300 foot deep lake) unsupervised. That is how tragedy happens. I've lived on a lake in a tourist town for 21 years now and people are just stupid around water, whether it involves mermaid tails or not. For instance we get a lot of boat traffic in the summer and guaranteed, 99% of those boaters don't wear life jackets. I basically just sit on my dock on Saturday afternoons watching boats passing, thinking "well someone's going to die today and won't likely be me". I'm going to be honest here (and I'm not hating on anybody by saying this), but in my opinion it was entirely that father's fault for leaving the kids in the pool unsupervised. I mean they were what? 5 and 7? Who leaves kids that young unsupervised in a pool? I was raised on a lake and my parents taught us from a very young age that we DO NOT go to the dock or the beach or near the water without them, EVER. People just need to realize that water is dangerous to us air-breathers whether it involves mermaid tails or not.

I definitely wouldn't buy my 5yr old a snowboard cause it "wasn't that much snow" and then leave them unattended to "figure it out". This accident could've 100% happened WITHOUT a mermaid tail. My son is 17yrs old. I had my son when I was 19 and I managed to supervise him and keep him alive this long. Parents nowadays seem to stick their kid with something fun so they don't need to be bothered. If I can do it alone.. other parents can too. This is sporting equipment, not a toy. Just my 2 cents.

My niece wants a mermaid tail so badly. She is 11 years old as of June. And I wanted to get her a finfun tail in the worst way. But last year while swimming in my tail she stood on my fluke and almost drowned me. She only just started dipping her head under water. She cannot swim, uses floaty noodles, and is not aware of those noodles as she hits people going by. So I get to be the fuddy-duddy saying no, you can't be safe in a tail, so I'm not getting you one. And thankfully her mom and other aunt agree. Hopefully seeing us in my tails will get her discipline in line and she will learn! 💚

That parent is the one to blame. There is reasons there are instructions and warnings - there are things you MUSTN'T do when wearing a tail... sry but blaming tails is like if he bumped into a wall with his car and blames the car company for it Edit: people buy those knock offs because they're cheap- and they are actually quite often dangerous. That is what happens when parents don't take 4 minutes in their life to first research before buying their children whatever they wish for. Edit 2: I'll never forget a story my brother told me. As I wanted to start to swim in a tail I really was impatient until he sat down with me and told me a story that branded into my head. His best friend was at the beach, I don't know where exactly but it didn't matter. there was a family who broughttheir daughter to the beach and she had a mermaid tail made of fabric. She put it on, bounced over to the water and then went for a swim. She only at deep water dared to take a dive and the friend of my brother was luckily in that moment also diving again as he saw the little girl. She didn't have the strength to pull herself up and use her legs to swim upwards in the ocean. He noticed she was struggling and she began to freak out. Quickly he pulled her up and helped her to the coast since she got dragged quite a significant amount away from the coast. Turns out that was her very first swim. That girl was so lucky he was nearby or who knows how that could've ended. As I heard that I first made sure that I can actually swim and can swim in the ocean and before I even thought of getting into a tail, I'd only put on the monofin and never go without supervision.

It would kinda make sense if he blamed the product itself for not having safety instructions, being unsafe materials or not enough information being out there or something. But also all these are avoidable by looking up info and doing some research before letting your kid use something that literally binds their legs in water. It should be common knowledge to never leave a kid alone in any amount of water, because kids do stupid things. This could have been a pair of slippers or shoes that the kid got her hands stuck in! So blaming mermaiding as a whole for not doing what a responsible adult should do is just stupid. You wouldn't let your kid go rollerskate alone without safety equipment like a helmet on right?

Before even watching the whole video I'm already like... Stuff like that is the exact reason why I am currently writing a... book/blog/don't know yet how I'll publish it... in German (a language that is lacking trustworthy mermaiding content despite like... 2 books addressed mostly to children or young teens) on what people who want to become mermaids, ESPECIALLY including parents of children who want to become mermaids, should keep in mind/be aware of before even getting started with this hobby. (I actually would love to include interviews with pros at some point for this project, but since I only am doing this on my own without planning to gain loads of money, if anything, with it, therefore probably having nothing but shout-outs/recommendations to my future readers to offer in exchange, I... never knew how to properly reach out to people like you who are making their living with mermaiding... ... okay, indirectly I just did, and to be honest, it is making me really nervous, but yeah. Hahaha...! ...sweats nervously) Edit: Wow, what happened there is incredibly sad... I hope it won't affect our community in the worst kind of ways (as you mentioned: getting kicked out of pools, etc.)... :( I really appreciate how strict you are on safety matters, and how polite you are explaining all of this despite being angry. Hope many people who need to will see this. Thank you for this important video. ♥
