Hi Evelyn! I'm new to your videos; just found you. I am a maker & a woodworker with a bit of an artsy bent...My mother was a master seamstress, and passed away last year. Her last year was a fight with dementia, and we coped with it together. She and I were so close. It was simply amazing what she could do with a sewing machine and thread. In her heyday, she sewed for 3 Miss Americas, and was a model herself for JCPenny. She sewed all of my clothes while I was growing up, including my Homecoming princess promenade dress, and gown and all of my prom dresses. Long story short- she left everything; sewing machine, fabric, etc. She tried to get me interesed over the years, and I would try but just was not interested...opting for painting, woodwork, and almost everything else....Recently, (I am in my late 50's) I've begin suffering from my knees wearing out, LOL...and needed to find something kinder to my body to vent my creative urges, and I came across an old dress in an odd place that Mom made for the Navy Ball of 1950-something...it was a beautiful brocade, off-white with lime green tinsel brocade. I looked at it, it was all lined and you could see almost NO stitching..it was absolutely gorgeous (and tiny, probably an 8). I remembered I had all of her sewing stuff in storage and right away I cleaned up my SheShed and re-vamped it for sewing! I unpacked the boxes, and relived memories of my childhood...seam rippers, nippers, her wrist pincushion with the pins with colored heads that would eat me alive as she stood me on a stool and fitted my clothes. I was in tears, but it was so precious and such a treasured moment. In the bottom was an article of clothing of hers, and in the pocket was a pair of earrings I'd been searching for, for a year. It was like a gift and an a message from mom that she was happy I was finally taking the time to sew. Now, don't get me wrong- I have some experience sewing...I did a stint of quilting, apron making, sewing for the Dorcas ministry at church- walker & wheelchair organizers, and the like, but never clothes. I just wanted to do quick-and-dirty craft sewing. As I upacked her things and relived those memories, I became more excited that his is what I'm going to do. :). Thank you for your videos so I can refresh my sewing skills, and hopefully lean on to get a little help as I start sewing clothing for myself (work clothes). I see in you the same excitement, passion and love for sewing, and it's just lovely. I know you are fighting a fight right now, but I wanted to write all of this to let you know that you have a lovely way about your teaching and tutorials, and if I'm hooked after watching a couple of them, I have not doubt that you are well loved by your community, and covered in prayer and positive wishes. Sending you my own best wishes, and thanks to have discovered you in the absence of having guidance from my Mom. Cheers!🥰

Me - my first ever sewing choice - plaid flannel shirt. "This will be easy - right?!" HA!! I learned plackets, collars, cuffs, stay stitches, collar stays, interfacing, top stitching, button and button hole placement, hemming, sleeves (OMG - SLEEVES!!). And - for some unknown reason - Maybe just the sewing gods laughing at all my effort, I forgot about matching the plaids. BUT - they did manage to come out (in the front at least). 😂. I'm now about 10 months into sewing and learning just how much I DON'T know about it! THANK you Evelyn for continuing in your mission with such a bright and cheery countenance! I love watching your videos and skimming through older clips. This channel is a godsend for ladies (or men) like me that have no siblings, mothers, grandmothers, fathers, brothers or other close family members to run to with the burning questions at 5AM on a Saturday morning, or at 10PM on a Thursday night. I can't wait to learn to design my own clothes and stop playing with everyone else's work - and YES - I've already started fiddling with my serger 😁

Your "how many 'things' in this pattern are new to me" method has been an absolute GAME CHANGER for my sewing journey! Just earlier today I was looking at a new Butterick pattern listed as "easy" that included button epaulettes, an invisible zipper, an waist tie, a statement lapel, and both woven AND knit fabric including knit neckband and armbands. I've only mastered two of those - none of those skills are individually hard, but i know that for me it's too much right now. Sanity saved! You're a gem 💎 And thank your for showing an example of how you can take the same pattern and make slightly different choices that result in a completely different garment. As a newbie sewist i am still learning how to visualize pattern possibilities, this is super helpful! 🤩

I've pattern matched several garments. The key is pattern matching before cutting out the pieces (lots of pinning). And lots of pinning before beginning to sew seams... sometimes even thread basting to get some patterns to line up. ... But believe me! It's well worth the effort to get the results. Most people never notice but I know! And I stand a little taller with pride when I wear those garments. Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵😷. Ps. Hope this comment finds you strong as we are all behind you.😊

As a beginner, I'm definitely accumulating skills and am making sure I've done a pattern a few times to make sure I'm comfortable with it (say neck/armhole facings) so that I have the confidence to take on the next pattern with zips and buttonholes (haven't done those yet). Next up will be learning how to match plaids, etc. It's fun and exciting to keep making progress.

I hope you are doing well. Been a lurker for many years on and off, but lost my sewing mojo when the pandemic started. My main challenge at the moment is fit. My body has changed as I’ve aged but I’ve always struggled with pants. I have quite a few mods to make every garment and they often conflict. Will try this process there by choosing one fit issue and perfecting it before moving on to the next issue + the first issue. Might be less crazy making than trying to get everything to work all at once! Blouse first, then skirt, then dress seems like a reasonable progression. Then shorts. Then pants. Thanks for this concept! Once I get a good consistent fit, I can think about adding skills. I already know a fair bit, but a wonky fit ruins the nicest finished garment!

For a beginner like me every project still contains three or four new skills to learn. But some of them -- I did sew-in self-fabric interfacing on the skirt I'm working on these days -- are pretty easy. Others, like buttonholes, are more challenging. Still need more buttonhole practice before I can finish this skirt. But this was my third time using french seams and I think I've got them down now! Hope your treatment is going well, with the minimum of side effects ❤

The pattern matching is brilliant! I don't think I have the patients to even try that much matching! It's a stunning effect and the welt pockets are the chief kiss. I've not tried welt pockets and wouldn't with such a bold pattern but on something that wouldn't show minor problems. As long as the kids who asked me to make whatever needed them could justify it. I've found that I only ever leave my comfort zone for kids!

That is a lovely garment, it's so finely put together. I do like the building idea - I seem to think that I need to start and just know everything - it's good to rearrange ideas to the understanding of building skills slowly.

OMG!🥰 I love the welted pockets! I just added welted pockets to my list of learned skills! I've also recently learned how to make my own block pattern. The more skills I learn, the more I love to sew!

I have been sewing for a long time, has it really been 50yrs…..Anyway So I can really appreciate the skill involved to make this. You did such a beautiful job. When I go thrifting I can’t buy something if the plaid or strips don’t match. It troubles me.😚

Ha ha ha! I am like you (sewing for nearly 50 years, as well): Unmatched stripes or plaids irk me. I made a test jacket of wide block plaid and it still annoys me that I did not take the time to align the sleeves (it is okay, though, at the time the waistline was too short for my torso).
