Everybody knows that France has had a thing with revolutions for a while, but how many exactly have they had? Today, we answer that question by taking an incredibly subjective look on the instances of French history that I consider to be revolutions.

Don't forget the franks who kicked the Romans out. The carrolingian dynasty fell apart in the late 900s to create actual France out of West Francia. The king of England was a duke of two major French dutchies during the hundred years war so that probably counts. The Duke of Burgundy also turned on France during the same war because the king killed the previous Duke to stop him from revolting. Brittany fought for independence from France several times once under a pirate Queen. I'm beginning to think France has never been that stable of a coujtry.

@taniths 1st and only sgt iron on duty sort of. The Normans were Vikings that the French had invited to live on their land to keep other Vikings from invading. While they were vassals of France they swore loyalty on the understanding that the French king would never actually give them any orders. Official declarations of war weren't a thing back then, so most nobles were free to attack their neighbors and expand the kingdom so long as they didn't attack someone allied to the king or who had an official peace treaty or something. The Normans had every right to expand into Belgium, England, or Italy as their own interests directed them so long as they still followed the king while they were actually in France. There was nothing wrong with being a nobleman loyal to several different countries at once. There was also no legal reason why a man who was a duke in one land couldn't be a king in another. The English kings had actually lost their holdings in Normandy by the time the hundred years war got going if I'm not mistaken. By that point most of their holdings were in Aquitaine, as the dutchess Eleanor had gotten bord of being queen of France so she and her husband got divorced and she married the king of England instead, becoming the mother of Richard the Lionhearted. It's this kind of convoluted bullshit that makes Feudalism a bad form of government. And allowed Prussia to become a thing.

Year: People of France: *sick and tired*
Funny enough Louis XVI wanted to rule France with enlightenment values in mind. But the nobles blocked him and opposed him. The French Parlement which was dominated by nobles who opposed any form of tax and financial reform. Louis XV was a terrible monarch who made France's financial situation worse and put off reform too late. Louis XVI made an earnest effort but he faced so much opposition that he gave up. Had Louis XVI been more forceful and kept Parlement abolished and not gutted the army, he could have forced the nobles in line with his enlightenment reforms. France though militarily dominated Europe since the late middle ages, it was hampered by its archaic feudal system and inefficient tax system. But then Napoleon came and modernized everything balancing France's budget for the first time in decades and rebuilt its administrative and military structure. Napoleonic France nearly conquered all of Europe even with the devastation and loss of life from the French Revolution. Now imagine how all powerful France would be had it managed to reform without the devastation and loss of life in the French Revolution. Louis XIV with the old system in place nearly created a united Franco-Spanish Superstate that would've utterly wiped the floor with the rest of Europe.

America: So a revolution every 300 years? Doctor:Yes America today: REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!
I just want to give 3 precisions : - it is not the Constitutionnal Assembly that took over Paris but the people, the Assembly didn't support it at first - most of the people were not upset with the actions of the Comity of Public Safety because it introduced taxation so everyone was able to afford food, whereas the Directory reestablished liberalism which made people angry - as a consequence, it is not the people who stopped Robespierre and his lads but their political ennemies, the Girondins, by a coup Nevertheless, great video ! :)

France could have remained a constitutional monarchy had either Louis Phillippe been more compromising on voting rights or if the monarchists had been united in the 1870s. After Napoleon III fell the rural parts of France elected a Monarchist Assembly but they were divided on who should be King, the descendent of Charles or the descendent of Louis Philippe and as such France stayed a Republic long enough for Monarchism to decline sealing the deal.
