Nauru is best known on KZread for all the poor investments it made in the 1980s, but did you know that the entire history of the island is just as wacky?

If you look at pictures of the island's interior there is just desolate stacks of coral, somewhat reminiscent of a grave yard. Very sad story of human greed, at the islands peak the citizens were one of the richest nations on earth per capita, on an island with no running water many owned swimming pools, now they are one of the poorest nations and rising sea levels will render the island uninhabitable.

Damn. That is the exact fate that happened to their hotel in Susupe, Saipan called the Nauru Building. After the phosphate depleted, they couldn’t pay for the building anymore (just like their other ones). That hotel shut down and is now the Marianas Business Plaza.
Why am I just seeing this? Yeah alot of the stuff you mentioned was was true, and as Nauruan myself I can say this was pretty accurate. We had little choice in regards to our actions in the international community. We had so little money that the dead in our morgues were starting to rot because we couldn't afford to buy diesel to keep our utilities going with power. And more people who were ill were stacking up in the hopsital. Our elders who endured the horrors WW2 said it was better when they were exiled to the other island as slaves, because at least they had something to eat. Nauru is now but a shadow of its former self, and may never recover fully. But despite the absnece of wealth and the growing challanges we face, the Nauruan people remain. All we can do is to keep going and hope for the best. Best wishes to you and your channel.

Outcast Panda Nah, it’s about the money. That’s one of the reasons why they agreed to host the detention camp for Australia there. The small island nations of the South Pacific often relies on other countries, especially richer countries like Australia or the US, for aid because they don’t have much of a sustainable economy there. Tourism sometimes isn’t enough. So they trade their UN memberships and diplomatic support for money. Many such countries are often knee-deep debating Asia-Pacific issues in the UN. The most famous is probably calling Taiwan as China and support for an independent West Papua. Though tiny, they still have equal votes in the UN as other countries save for the veto powers of the 5 permanent members.

Nauru went from one of the richest nations from selling bird poop to Australia’s prison island, and now into 2020 they are now Australia’s quarantine island.
There is a Nauru Tower on Ala Moana boulevard in town. A good investment? There were other phosphate islands, and the commissioners were obligated to invest and help islanders when the phosphate was gone. I think there is more to this story and other similar ones. Sir Arthur Grimble's A Pattern of Islands tells the story of his post on Tarawa, 1914-30 as a British Colonial officer. He left for the Carribbean in 1931
"Wow europeans are so brutal" *Japanese* "Allows us to introduce ourselves."

Wow I heard about that camp I didn’t know it was Nauru
Why's the name of the song you played during the sponsorship? Sounds like a real banger
Historically it is beleived that Nauruans are descendents of Micronesians and Polynesians that settled and mixed on the island. Thus why there genetics and language are a mystery.

Why don't they just pour sand and dirt and stuff over the old mines to make the land habitable again?
