So far, I've only seen two of your videos. I will be watching many more! You present concepts SO well. As a beginner (at age 61), sometimes it's not easy to even see that there are mistakes. Sometimes you can tell something's wrong, but you don't know exactly what, or how to correct it. You are very helpful in explaining what's wrong; why it's wrong; and how to correct it. My personal favorite example in this video was the two buildings where the first one looks like it's going uphill. Thank you so much for sharing your insights.

First of all i just wanted to thank you for the comprehensive and well thought video! I personally often sketch outdoors and tend to forget these fundamentals, which results in not so desirable outcome. Another thing i wanted to mention is just how consistent you are in content making! You don't just focus on quantity, but also quality this i so admire. With that might i recommend making a video/s regarding your mindset while drawing, your journey that led you to drawing, drawing habits that allowed you to be so consistent. Again thanks for the amazing content.🙏

Thanks. I’m wanting to draw more outside, so maybe I’ll devise some videos around that more. Drawing is often something we have to put behind more urgent matters. Being older, I know have more time than in the past. That is probably the biggest advantage I have. Choice. I appreciate your kind comments. 😀

when i first learned how to type with ten fingers it was hard - with my two finger method i was way faster... it takes the same kind of discipline to build the habit of setting your lines deliberately on the paper. I loved that ! thank you for your videos Stephen - so inspiring!!

Yeah they took off points using the wrong pencil in drafting class. I think I failed because I did ok in art class. When I went to drafting class I thought it would also be easy. I was a legend in my own mind. It could be tough with or without the right tools.

What an excellent video! I love how clearly you explain things. It's also worth remembering that the widest points of ellipses are rounded rather than sharp and that foreshortening makes the half nearer the picture plane slightly deeper than the one further away (the same principle as the receding buildings).

Amazing video and very informative! But isn’t there a correct way of crosshatching? Because what you showed in the video is that we shouldn’t crosshatch and only use hatching. Obviously I know that the demonstration was incorrect but I would much appreciate a demonstration of correct crosshatching. Maybe you have shown it in a different video? Or is it just not a preferred way of shading for your style?

Of course you can cross hatch. I don’t use it as often as hatching, and if I do the angles the lines cross at are not very high. But in the end, we are all free to experiment and use whatever way we find creates the effect we are after best. 😀

Like you, I only started to learn late in life to learn how to draw as a way to keep my brain healthy. On point no 5: what are tips to give to someone who doesn't have access to multiple pens?

We can still get a great deal of line variability from one pen. It’s to do with the angle we hold it, the pressure we apply, and the speed of our line. Play around with these three aspects of drawing a line and be amazed! And if we use the same brand of pen repeatedly, we become really adept at creating wide variability. Have fun with it. 😀

You have a perspective error on number 6 mistake -- the windows and the spaces betweem them should get narrower and narrower due to foreshortening as you say, but the thickness of the wall should get thicker and thicker, because that's at 90 degrees to the wall. You are looking at the thickness on the closer windows at a sharp angle (so more foreshortening and thinner-looking), and more face-on on the farther windows (so less foreshortening and thichker looking). Depending on how thick the wall is, the glass itself my actually disappear from view on the farthest windows, leaving only a hole in the wall through which you see just the wall thickness.

The actual thickness of the wall does increase as it moves further away, and it should increase in width relative to the total width of its window. But because it is also further away, it may not actually be wider (on our paper) than closer ones. But perhaps I didn’t draw this well. And yes, what you say about the glass is absolutely true. 😀
