South Africa has eleven "official" languages, as in these are recognized on paper, but people are forced to use English in official correspondence to an increasing degree. Essentially, we almost only have one actual official language sadly.

south Africa is basically an English speaking country all the other languages get ignored. i think you are more likely to find people who don't speak English in the usa and uk than in south Africa

Do we need Musk as clickbait to learn about South Africa? I only cared because it's on Hilbert's channel. Also it would me more interesting to argue how many different cultures a person has explored in depth (e.g. through language) than counting how many people they could technically communicate with (but wouldn't)

I grew up in SA, also from Pretoria as a native english speaker. Growing up i hated Afrikaans class with a passion. Many people (including myself) plan to emigrate eventually and since Afrikaans is only spoken here we don't see a point in learning it.

He definitely didn’t pronounce it that way but that’s fine… Granted he didn’t a full out lateral click, but that’s also an incredibly hard sound to make that requires practice if you’re coming from a very western language background. Also a certain amount of click actually gets smoothed by good noise suppression sometimes as well

I'm from SA, I have a lot of friends from Musk's old school. Here in SA, second language Afrikaans is a joke, you can pass final year Afrikaans FAL without even being able to speak the language at all. I can promise you he can't speak it.
