Dafaq ?!?!?!? 🤨 Jordan is such a long winded & boring arse, arrogant Fuck you can even see Alan falling asleep when he talks !!!!!! 😤 I get why Jordan & Austin (who isn’t half as bad as Jordan) want to be all buddy buddy with Alan.... he is well respected, has a pre-existing KZread audience & is fairly easily swayed by a logical argument (his ‘this is why Starting Strength sux’ Video is less than two years old... and now he’s certified to teach?!? 😓)....... but I don’t get why Alan keeps slobbering all over their balls.... they are boring, arrogant, talk down to everyone while also saying nothing new (they’re basically “KZread Fitness Fakes” with Medical Degrees & an ‘entitled Rich White Male’ attitude). The quicker Barbell Medicine fails, the better. 🖕

I’m really glad you “infidels” spoke out with clear science and math, to help people plan sanely. No one needs to reconcile themselves to the advice in Starting Strength (the Holy scripture) and fear going against “Uncle Rip” (Moses). The nutritional advice there seems mostly tailored to 15 year olds with the metabolism of a hamster. If you’re 40 you can gain strength and will increase in weight and mass, but it doesn’t take 4000 calories a day to sustain it. Since he also looks down on excessive cardio, many of his “disciples” may be on the road to diabetes or at least chronic insulin insensitivity. Once you eat the protein and carbs you need to maintain a slight surplus, your body will do what several million years evolved it to always do in the face of a surplus- store the rest as fat.

I try to keep my carbs around 45-50% of daily caloric intake, fats and protein between 25-30%. This seems to strike a good balance. I've done 33/33/33 but that's too hard to maintain and I didn't give me the results I wanted.

If you’re in your LP but nearing the end (doing fives around 400 for BS and DL and 275 BP, 175 OHP), and carrying more fat than you’d like can you do “off-day” workouts to minimize the excess calories on those days you don’t train the main lifts?

So you can get stronger while losing weight. Can you get stronger and lose muscle at the same time? Or getting stronger is always an indicator of gaining muscle or at least not losing it?

  • @MrCmon113

The maximum amount of weight you can move in a certain way also depends on the composition of your muscles and nervous system. So, yes, you can have less muscle and be stronger in a lift that requires the muscle.

A huge problem jumping into this, is if you eat completely wild style with zero consistency and you want to change that habit keeping a food journal with the idea of starting while continuing on that path is not good. I mean like, zero consistency, one day eat way too much horrible shit, another day eat real food in sensible portions, another day no food just booze, another day maybe just one candy bar, then jumble that up in any order in any number of times. All I can say is I feel either minutes from deaths door or full of energy, no consistent sleep pattern, in fact working out makes it impossible to sleep. So what I'm getting at it, there should be a journal or channel or something of someone whose shit is totally fucked up trying to get it straight, maybe I could do that.

@Alan Thrall. Question. And this may sound dumb, I'm not sure. But twice in the video its mentioned that a 'decent starting point of Protein amount' is 1 Gram per pound. But the first time, he said Kilogram, and later in the video he said per pound. Can you clarify? Should I really be eating 185g of Protein? (185 lb guy). Or should I be eating 75g of protein (Since I probably weight like...75KG). I know this might be a novice question, but its truly something I've never had clarified. Thank you so much in advance.

It depends on many factors, but it tends to be more effective, yes. Strength can be improved by different pathways, and while "skill" doesnt depend much on calorie conditions, "hypertrophy", which provides the potential for more strength, does. Training level, BF%, training play a large role, though: The novice overweight lifter can probably gain a good portion of the strength in a slight deficit of what he could in a surplus, while its very much different in an advanced ripped lifter.

felipe esquivel You might either want to give it some time and see or shift your intake to make sure you have energy for training. If you are just cutting a little you might consider just adding more conditioning. I love hate doing giant sets Alsruhe style, but you will improve far faster in many ways and improve your work capacity. If it has just been less than a few weeks you probably are being a little preemptive and you should see if your strength levels balance out. It often does after a little while and if you can improve your health you will be a step ahead. Better work capacity usually leads to improved strength gains long term. You can use this as an opportunity for more than just shedding a few pounds of excess.

Thanks I did only try it one day and I couldn't do my squats I normally do and felt just drained. I will give it a few weeks to adjust to it. I appreciate the response

Some of it is physical, some of it is mental. You aren't used to it yet for the physical part, but for the mental part... for me it was that I didn't think I'd have the energy for it, so I didn't. Once I got past that, it wasn't so bad. I also go to the gym (generally) in a fasted state, because intermittent fasting and I usually go right after work. I'm also a fatty, so I might have more reserves to work from, lol :D

Have you read the book? If not, read it. If you're stalling, then you probably are done with your LP, or you started too heavy.

Is it 1gm per kilo body weight of protein or 1gm per pound? I am 180lbs 1gm/lb would put me at 180gms of protein a day... Seems unsustainable. However, I am approximately 80kg so 80gm of protein seems reasonable.

The answer is in the video. 1g/lb or 2-3g/kg.

Yep, and both are correct. 1 g/lb is 180g for your weight and 2-3g/kg is 160-240g. But personally I think it's a little overkill, something like 1,6g/kg should work just fine during bulk (130g for your weight).

The boys are back in town! I’ve got a more specific question. What 3 days should we be logging for our journal/log (training or non-training days)? Should these days be the same every week? By the way, you guys are outstanding. Keep it going!
