How MADAME DE POMPADOUR looked in Real Life (Louis XV's Mistress)- With Animations- Mortal Faces

Welcome to Mortal Faces! Today we look at Madame de Pompadour. In this video I explain about how her confidence took her to the top of French society and beyond. She was the famous mistress to Louis XV in the 18th century before Madame du Barry.
In this video, I show you my artistic interpretation of Madame de Pompadour in real life. I used my technology (cinema 4d and after effects) and photoshop skills to show how I think she might have looked. Of course all the renderings are just my own opinion. And I also talk about her life.
On my channel I try to make it easier to understand the lives of famous historic figures. I know how difficult it can be to connect with text book renderings and bland biographies. So here I use my technology and photoshop skills to transform them to real life so it is easier to connect with them. Then I talk through and explain my interpretation of their lives and who they were.
I hope you enjoy this video

Even more so when you remember that the great fashion designers (e.g. Chanel, Dior, Givenchy etc) did not exist back then, and women more or less designed their own clothing. Madame de Pompadour knew what styles flattered her, and was never seen in anything else.

That's the thing - almost all of these paintings of supposedly beautiful women (or handsome men) in history don't make them look all that beautiful (or handsome). Obviously, what constitutes attractiveness is subjective, but still ... I don't know if the perception of that was different back in the day or the artists just didn't capture their supposed attractive qualities properly.

Madame de Pompadour's looks seem to have been of the sort that relied on dazzle and expression rather than facial features. Her brother said once that not one of her many portraits really looked like her, as her charms were of the sort that are not easily captured by mere paint and watercolours. She was very intelligent, well educated, articulate, charismatic and also very funny, so people tended to find her attractive even though she was really just moderately pretty.

I think it’s hilarious how older folks long for the “back in time” days because people “valued and respected” marriage. Back in Time: side chick is a profession. Bottom line: humans haven’t changed only technology 🙂 thanks for this!!!

The weird thing is, the queen didn't mind that much, and actually got along very well with her. Unlike modern day side chicks, Madame de Pompadour had no desire to boot the queen off her throne - in fact, she was always deeply respectful to Queen Marie, and actually seems to have had a genuine desire to be accepted by the queen as "one of the family." She made a point of patronising the Queen's pet charities, and even went out of her way to perform little acts of thoughtfulness like arranging for the Queen's bedroom to be redecorated in a style that Madame de Pompadour knew the Queen admired. Queen Marie, in her turn, seems to have been relieved to be spared from childbearing - she once complained she was forever "in bed, or pregnant, or brought to bed." Mind you, she had 17 pregnancies, so no wonder she was happy to let the side chick take over some of the work of servicing the king, as it were 🙂 It was a weird relationship but it seemed to work well for all parties involved.

Side chick was a profession, when marriages were arranged for political reasons. Mind you, Louis XV's mariage was a real joke: he was wed to the daughter of a recently deposed king of Poland, so queen Mary brought absolutely nothing in terms of foreign alliance or wealth. All she had going for her was her rank as a princess. It would have been wiser to marry the king to a French duchess, to at least strengthen the power of the monarch domestically.

  • @chooseyourpoison5105

    @chooseyourpoison5105

    2 жыл бұрын

@@princevesperal It was precisely because she had little power or wealth that Marie was chosen. Marrying a French noblewoman would have destabilized the throne as the various powerful families fought for influence over the King. Marie had no powerful relations and was therefore a threat to no one. She was not a great beauty but she was sensible, kind and well educated. She also had the advantage of being Catholic, and of the right age to marry and start producing babies as fast as possible. As the 15 year old Louis had recently been seriously ill, his father feared that he would die before an heir to the throne had been born, and so he was married off as soon as possible to Marie, who proved her worth by promptly giving birth to twins within months of the wedding. Louis was very fond of Marie in the initial years of their marriage although their relationship dwindled over the years.

Ikr? Just reading about her daily routine exhausts me. Up at dawn for mass, then her court duties all day, then after dinner an entertainment for the king such as a play, a supper with friends or a gambling party, usually lasting till two or three in the morning. Then snatch a few hours sleep and start all over again. Day after day, year after year. The lifestyle would have staggered the hardiest constitution, let alone a delicate one like that of Madame de Pompadour.

@YAMATO Ironically enough, that probably contributed to killing her. She was expected to dress like a queen but the heavy fabrics, corsets, hoops and panniers were a torture for her. She also disliked the rich food served at Versailles and said to her physician Dr Quesnay that she only ever felt really well in her country houses where she could eat a simple diet. The drains at Versailles were also notoriously bad and were probably responsible for her continual chest infections and bouts of tonsilitis.

Iron in velvet glove. 🌟 The difference between de Pompadour and du Barry imo was temperament because they were both ambitious and successful. Du Barry had escaped the Terror of the French Revolution but her arrogant foolish belief in her exceptional position and looks caused her to return and be relieved of that lovely head! She thought no way would her former adoring public (she was a popular stage actress) hurt her. She thought wrong.

Her and the King: I had a suspicion she was Louis XV's favorite because of her acting abilities very often on the converted Ambassador's Staircase. An actress usually is very heavily made up with body paint and costumes which could easily conceal substances of poison. Not a good chapter after evaluating the king's reign combined with wars and the parlament of Paris. He was a very happy child at first, I think, in Paris where there was a more varied part of the population to be seen day by day.

Not gonna lie, I´m not a fan of history at all. But getting more of a connection to those people through your videos is very fascinating to me

Not that impressed with her. Dumped her husband because she wanted “better.”

She didn't dump him for "better" but for the "best". And she even told her husband.

Well, her husband LeNormant d'Etoiles actually did pretty well out of the divorce. He remained great friends with her brother Abel, and Reinette herself remained on good terms with all her former husband's family, including taking some of them with her to Versailles as ladies-in-waiting, and arranging prestigious marriages for the younger d'Etoiles relatives. LeNormant's court connections enabled him to become a successful financier. He also took up with a mistress of his own, Marie-Aimee Maltha, and was reportedly very happy with her. He even wrote Reinette a letter some years later saying that he bore no ill will and wished her all the best. All divorces should be so amicable.

To be fair, it was an arranged marriage. It's not as if she freely chose him. Her mother and his uncle (who was rumored to be Pompadour's biological father) chose him for her.
