The drivers of the Kamaz Master Dakar Rally truck must be prepared to get their hands dirty, you never know what mechanical issues will raise their ugly heads at a rally raid. One of the most common hiccups is a flat tire or a damaged wheel. So, this is why they practice changing the wheel.

    I want to see the Red Bull F1 guys change the tyre on a Kamaz. That would be interesting. Why no small magnetic bowl for the wheel nuts. In a hurry they go everywhere.

    Seems like there’s a better way to do it better impact, larger amp hour battery to avoid charging, container for lug nuts so they can’t get lost etc

    Ya, and dropping the jack when none of the bolts were done up made me cringe as well as the circular tightening method being made worse by the said weight being dropped... It's like nobody trained them...

    Clearly there is onboard air. I can't imagine having a little 10gal tank onboard to run an air gun would be a problem. Would certainly speed things up. They could also use a stronger electric impact, upping it to a 3/4 would also be faster.

    Running a hose to the front tyre and then putting it back will be a problem. They have been racing and winning for more than 30 years, they have thought about it.

    @@MrPaukann i mean, they gotta do that to run the air jack they are using. Upping it to a 1/2" hose to run a 3/4" gun would be harder to move than the little 1/4" hose but still easy, especially if you use a hose reel. I guess I just don't see the issue with it.

    @@MrPaukann I don't watch Dakar rallies so this is a motorsport that is fairly foreign to me. I didn't realize the field can get so spread out. I'm used to rallies where the field may only have a spread of a few minutes to maybe a half hour or so.

    Exactly. Though speed is obviously good, I think ensuring the wheel is on securely and that all your stuff is back where it should go is way more important in something like Dakkar.

    for redbull (mostly because of under 2 seocnd f1 pitstops i was expecting slightly quicker but its still amazing how so little people can change the tires of a massive dakar truck

    The important thing is that they're fast enough. If 4 minutes and 30 or so seconds is fast enough for them to win, then it's fast enough.

    The way to speed up the nut removal and keep the fluid in everyone's eyes is to use an impact socket!!!!!! The thicker walls are part of the socket for strength and inertia. I seriously can't believe the engineer of the team (middle seat guy) let there be a chrome socket attached to that gun, or with all the different safety checks the truck goes through, like do you have a way to remove the lug nuts it passed.

    2 impact wrenches, keep the jack connected the airline and get a steel plate with some bolts through it for grip to sit it on rather than a random bit of wood.

    I was expecting the truck to have its own hydraulic jacking system to be honest. Pneumatic powered bottle jacks are a thing of the past, so many better options now.

    I would recommend em to use a eletric tire gun. Milwaukee has em and they are pretty damn good. Much faster and stronger than tiny gun they using here.

    Why not thread next nut while you tighten the previous one? I've done this working in auto garages. No star pattern? No jack stand? If that bottle jack had slipped in a high pressure race situation that guy could have been crushed under that axle when I came swinging down. Having a second impact would have been much faster. In a race you don't need to put gloves on if you're already wearing them. Magnetic tray Velcro'd to the impact might save your ass in the dunes. There's probably 30 seconds to gain here.

    You need a small shelf/box on the front of the fender to hold the wheel nuts rather than dropping them in the dirt.

    If I was running that team I'd try to have frame mounted hydraulic rams with an 18x18" pad on on each side of the rear of the truck. That way all you ha e to do is flip a switch to lift the back of the truck

    Strange how they don't tighten them by torque, I'd assume that's a safety critical component but I guess they know better

    Это в полигонных условиях, а если колесо пробил и машина набок завалилась или в песке стравили и провернуло до спуска давления пока откопаешь или выставишь ровно , больше времени уйдет

    To be honest, I could do that. In fact, most people who have no problem changing a car's tire could. I was truly expecting a lot more. Or maybe it's just not as easy as it seems.
