How Long does it take to become FLUENT in English?: The 10,000 hour rule

In this video we look at the truth about learning English and how long it takes. We look at the 10,000 hour rule discussed in detail by Malcolm Gladwell in his book: "Outliers: The story of Success". Is it true? Does it really take 10,000 hours or are there any shortcuts. How much is hard work? How much is talent? Is there such a thing as a "natural language learner".

You completely right, and it's really honest from you saying that. They're some people who say, "10 years,no way, that's too much!!! you just have to go and live abroad in an English speaking country 1 year or 2, it will be more than enough to become FLUENT". Even though someone is gifted, there will be a lot on his/her plate, you can't get away from it ! unless you suffering from Hypermnesia? Learning a language from A to Z is a lifetime job, what I mean by that is, yes 10 years would be enough! but if someone wants to go further and go on and on learning all kind of different subjects like, The economy, Medicine, Science ... It'll be a little bit longer. I do very often Dental surgery translations and it didn't take me 1 month or 2 to get used to the niceties of this particular language. In my opinion, there's no miracle solution, the only key words are, desire, time spent, and for sure work. Really nice and professional job from you, clear and precise. I wish you all the best for your tutorials. Eddie Antonio.

Although 10k hours is arbitrary, I do believe it takes at _least_ 10k hours to learn a language to anything like a fluent level. In reality, for most people, I genuinely believe it takes closer to 30k hours to be _really_ good. If you're thinking about native level and you're an adult, you can just forget it. Your fellow adults who speak the language natively already have an minimum of 80k (maybe more) hours of immersion in the language by the time they reach adulthood, and that is in the perfect environment, often without another language getting in the way. To catch up to them is not possible. I don't care who you are or how many hours you put in, it won't happen, ever. You can get very functional/comfortable after TENS of thousands of hours though. Some people will tell you they were comfortable after a couple of thousand hours.... Don't believe them, they're either FOS or they've _grossly_ overestimated their level.

I believe that the main reason for all those promises of quick learning is to attract students to the specific language school. Deep inside we all hope that there is a "magic pill" which will make us fluent right after swallowing. In pursuing these pipe dreams we change language schools, teachers, conversation partners, study materials etc. All those language "gurus" want us to be sure that their methods can lead us to success. How do we not rise to the bait if it is so sweet? Then only after a long way of trial and error we finally become mature enough to realize that there is no Father Christmas in real life. The only way to get fluent is 10K hours of hard work. Thank you for honesty LetThemTalkTV.

  • @futurez12

    @futurez12

    3 жыл бұрын

Yep, the number of people who ask questions like: "If I complete this course, will I be fluent?" just shows you the mentality of people when it comes to languages. People want a time frame, they won't to _know_ that something will _work._ The reality is nothing like that will ever get you results. One has to live in the language for years and years to get to the kind of level they're looking for. Nobody wants to hear that, so they fool themselves into believing the 'big sell' of 'fluent in x months' that the language learning industry perpetuates. Whenever someone says something like: "When I'm 'done' learning x language, I'm going to learn 'y' language" I already know they're not going to learn _any_ language, at least not to a high level, because their mindset is completely wrong and they have a totally unrealistic expectation. Same for those who say: "I'm going to learn x language in x months." These people get to around a B1 level (which is a LONG way short of actual fluency), realise how much they don't know, then kid themselves that they've reached a 'comfortable' level, before moving onto the next language where they rinse and repeat, resulting in not really knowing any language to any kind of functional/useful level, but, instead, having a very basic, superficial knowledge of a bunch of languages where the only thing they understand _really_ well is preschool content. KZread is _full_ of these people. Trouble is, the unsuspecting language learning beginner can't tell that they're not fluent and believe the BS they peddle, only to be left completely crushed when they inevitably fail in their quest to reach their completely unrealistic expectations.

One of the first word I’ve learnt from an English textbook for beginners was „cottage”. I was very surprised when I could hardly explain the meaning of this simple word to my hosts in England. I wrote down the word, draw a picture of a house (my vocabulary was about 2000 word that time), so at the first day of my arrival they learnt an English word from me, while it struck me, that English people learn from other textbooks than we foreigners. So I think to speak fluent English is a bit more complicated that 10 000 hours learning. - According to my experience, one can learn ca. 2000 words and 400 basic expressions in 2 years with a lazy schedule of 1hour/day, 5day/week ~ 250 hours/year that is in 500 hours in 2 years. I call this level „Small insight” - One can reach „Communication level” in 4 years (1000 hours) with the same schedule. This means ca 4 000 words, 800 general, 800 special and 800 grammar expressions (typical sentences). Till this level I found bilingual textbooks with audio records the most effective sources to learn from. As I see for most of us this is the top level to reach. - I think that fluent English (not perfect) can be reached with consequent(!) learning in 8 years which means the usage of ca. 10 000 word + 3 x 1000 expression. On this level more time is needed to keep and update our acquired knowledge beside learning the knew ones- minimum 1 hour/day should be sacrificed for English. So in my opinion the total time needed for fluent English is: 8 years ~ 2500 hours (with lazy schedule). Reaching this level you must keep the min 1hour/day schedule, or else you will degrade your knowledge. Your knowledge can improve or degrade, there is no stagnation. Even so it’s a mission impossible for most of us to reach a level of a 14 year old English pupil, because they learn their language in school, during lessons like math, geographic, history, PE, music etc. while we learn from textbooks which has nothing to do with these subjects, and real English consequently. We have difficulties about how to say 3^3 or to list the parts of a bicycle or of a flower, not mentioning what to do with them. I think the publications of thematic textbooks (words + expressions) synchronized with the living English culture could help a lot to be in step with native speakers. Another fact must also be considered: since acknowledged language exams became outsourced from the higher education system, it became a business. The private institutions are interested in profit, which means more exams. One way of more exams are more fails…

to me learning a foreign language is like on-off process, not sure about the 10000 hours, but it is like you leearrrn and rrest and then click -and you suddenly find urself to be over it, it is like a growth spur, uneven pulsating process, - a quality rather than quantity acquisition, and yes, many setbacks come with unfit teachers who clog up your mind instead of clearing it of doubts. I came to see teachers as a reflection of what I actually can't rather than CAN, and subsequently, explore my own chimaeras which have invoked that teacher... Well, apparently, i got rid of the worst because dear Gideon is my dream-teacher. Respect

Yet another brilliant point made! I couldn't agree more with you on this! English, sadly, has been turned into this instant ramen thing which people become more and more stingy in investing time in learning. Guess one of the reasons is because nowadays if you are good at English, the possibility of you finding a better job is higher... I can't help feeling like English is now mostly appreciated as a tool, rather than a language with its own beauty and nuance. Then again, maybe it's just me...

Dear Gideon, as for me, I'm by no means depressed; on the contrary, I totally agree with the 10,000 hour idea, because it's 100% clear to me, a pianist by profession, what it means - working hard to achieve some realistic goal. So, I entirely agree with the people who write here in the comments that you are among those few who says true things about learning languages. After having seen this video, I may say for sure: not only are you natural as a linguist, as an actor (each teacher, I believe, should be a bit of an artist :-)), but also a specialist who can be trusted.

I'd like to share my own strategy of learning a language and to hear other opinions on the case. After you've learned basic grammer, you should take an interesting novel in the original, preferably of what's-going-to-happen-next type, and literally scan it from the beginning to the end, looking for each unknown word in the vocabulary, learning words, expressions, etc. If you get through this period of real agony, it will be much easier to read the book for the second time. Then a lazy time comes, when you are not suffering any more, but only injoying. The books you have read become your privat lexical thesaurus (and a favourite page-turner as well; for me it was Agatha Christie for a long time). Now, when I've got to refresh my vocabulary, I only need to reread something interesting I had already got through some time ago. But, perhaps, this way is possible only for pathologically avid readers :-)

I believe if you put yourself in a total English speaking enviroment (for example by moving to an English speaking country for studying purposes) it will take you much less than 10000 hours to become fluent in English. Surely you won't be sounding native either way, but your speech is gonna be rather good. I'm claiming this from my own experience in studying Turkish in Ankara. We all started from zero at a language school, studying 5 days a week, 6-7 hours a day. It took us 9 months to finish the whole course and finally we learned Turkish at C1.

Very true, but seen through a very specific window. I am in my late-50s and I prefer to think of myself as having much more than 10,000 hours to go. That 'Gladwell's treshold' of 10,000 hours is O.K. for young people who have no time to waste on their way to GREAT SUCCESS which they are bound to achieve. If you want to stay mellow (whatever it means) you have to titrate the pleasure of learning and be prepared for (at least) 50,000 hours! Learning without preset time limits is even better! Well, I for one, love discovering new things about languages. Not only foreign languages, my native one (Polish) as well.

Am i learning English while reading Novels and other Books, listening to audiobooks, watching youtube videos like this one or it is just 10000 hours learning grammar and practicing explicitly English? My English has been improving over time but i got the feeling that the progress stoped at some point maybe i need to read more novels and less blogs and learn grammar in smile bites. I make often grammar mistakes in my native language as well, it can only eliminate them by triple checking.

Hi sir, I saw your one of the videos in which you were telling that one should spend ten thousand hours to learn a language or anything else. Sir for this a lot of patience is needed, or required which today's generation doesn't have. So how?

Gladwell's 10,000 hours rule is very misleading. What Gladwell said was that it takes roughly 10,000 hours to develop a skill to **mastery**. This is important and often overlooked. The definition of fluency in a language is very personal. For many, being fluent means feeling comfortable in a specific context. Does it mean to be a master? Probably not. On the other end of the spectrum, I would recommend another book: The First 20 Hours, by learning junkie Josh Kaufman. Kaufman's take is very different, as the provocative title suggests. In medio stat virtus: it probably takes between 20 and 10,000 hours to become fluent whatever your definition. On a personal note, I've been studying and practicing the English language for about 40 years, not full time though. I consider myself reasonably fluent in most circumstances, but I'm definitely not a master. I'm 100% sure Gideon could detect I'm not just by reading this comment.

Thanks for your comment you are right about 10,000 hours to achieve "mastery" I could have explained a lot more but with only 6 minutes time was limited. Your English seems pretty good. I'll investigate the book you mentioned.

But 'mastery' in a language takes natives 18+ years of 12-16 hours/day of immersion, every single day. Nobody in history has ever put in that kind of time to reach 'mastery' in _any_ other field. Language 'mastery' is a whole other level of mastery. You can only say you're a master of something if you're at, or close to, the top of the field. Trouble is, as a 2nd language learner, your field is crammed _full_ of genuine masters who have been at it for close to 100k hours (by the time they're just 18 years of age) before (assuming you're an adult) you've even started to learn how to say: "Hi, how are you?"

Interesting thought about 10 000 hours and I tend to believe it. However I disagree about talent. If you're not good at painting or composing poems you'd hardy become a brilliant artist or poet. And the opposite - a keen hearing is really useful in the musical field. Some people say it may even help in learning laguages.
