How Lifelike FX Creature Masks are Made
Ғылым және технология
Halloween's coming up, and we're looking for the best ways to transform into a terrifying creature of the night. Monster masks have been a longstanding horror effects tradition, and today's masks are more lifelike than ever. We visit the workshop of Immortal Masks to learn how the artists there sculpt, mold, cast, and paint amazing silicone masks that look and move realistically.

As soon as I heard the company name I knew this was gonna be good. Their stuff is expensive but this video shows exactly why. Some great insight into what it takes, and it's nice to see them not shy about showing the whole process.
You dont see the other mask companys letting cameras in well done immortal masks for letting us in this is fantastic seeing the magic happen :-)

Immortal masks is a phenomenal company! I own 5 silicone masks from them! They are all so realistic! I just ordered 2 from them for Christmas 2022! I cannot wait to receive them because they look so terrifying and look so creepy!
There’s so much flexibility in these silicone masks that you could glue air bladders inside them and the effect reads really well
0:23 nice Bebop and Rocksteady! (from TMNT)
nice. i guess the best mask for people with glasses would be an alien. would be fun to se a stop-motion-picture of a mask being made from scratch to final painting.
Always great to see people passionate and knowledgeable about what they are doing. You can see the guy really know his stuff. Awesome video,

Agree I was thinking up to 2000, and I think 600 is fair, and if you do it right I'm sure you can win at clubs prices for best costumes, but think about it can you put out 600$ right now to buy it? It's a lot
@AlphasysNl

Michael Grinshtat It is a lot, yeah. For the quality of the products, I would gladly pay it though.
@mellodge
9 жыл бұрын
Alphasys I've toyed with the idea of mask making and doing it for a living. I have the skill to do it. But it's which way to go - pile 'em high and sell 'em cheap to the casual halloween party goer, or make outstanding custom peices and sell a few to hardcore collectors for a high price. I'd find the latter un-fullfilling though. It's deciding which route is more lucrative.
@thedon008
9 жыл бұрын
mellodge I'm doing sculpts, busts and figures, and I really haven't figured out what would be the best way to do it. I can either make 1 cast, paint it and sell it for 2 grand (if I find a buyer) or make 15-30 casts, and maybe sell them as resin kits for 150 bucks each. The cost of the resin, shipping and all that stuff then comes into play.

Profit margin is extremely high as far as cost goes, but there's so much labor involved!! The silicone costs 10x as much as the latex pour does. If not more. My silicone mask I made, rock mold, no core (I roll cast after brushing in detail coat) and my cost in silicone was $120. Now, I used a different silicone than they did, one more for appliances but it worked. So add that to the labor and you've got a $500+ retail piece.
@mellodge
9 жыл бұрын
yup. First off silicone is crazy expensive, but it is the labor mainly. I make predator masks which are very expensive even for latex, because of the dreads especially, and the teeth. A good one will easily sell for £500 (about $700). I've had people who claim I should charge less because "your doing something you enjoy" which is rubbish. Why should they get my time and skill for nothing.
That last bit of the interview is surprisingly creepy and awesome! I expected it to look good, but it looks SPECTACULAR!
