Honestly ready player one nailed how the metaverse starts. A large public mmo becoming the gateway to other ips while still standing on its own. Fortnite's not much of an rpg, but neither ffxvi or wow developed a fortnite tie-in either. XD

When fortnite goes VR, IT will be the metaverse! I had the same thought at the big bang event. Zuck missed out and Epic is the metaverse king as of now.

Facebook’s meta is focusing on becoming the “Metaverse” not everyone's Metaverse. We need to see big companies being open to collaborating to create everyone's Metaverse, not their own (otherwise it will have the same fate as horizon worlds) for “Ready player one”s vision to comes true (which I believe is what everyone wants to come true, except the part where one corporation controls everything) we need to see big companies seeing each other as partners not competitors (there will still obviously be competition between them as that's how the world works) just enough to work together to transfer avatars from one world to the next. Big Companies need to work together to create the foundation of the metaverse and not their own, if this is done right we can’t comprehend how big it can become. The next stage of the internet can only be made together, not by a single corporation. Great video, I’m glad you brought up that the metaverse isn’t just a VR space. 4:38 A video at this level of editing and research needs more views.

Open source foundation with each company making their own custom worlds. But we still can't figure out open source "hosting" of servers. Who will pay for them? The closest we've come to open source hardware is the blockchain, but it is expensive, sluggish and inefficient for everyone involved. >Is it even possible or do we need one company to own the foundation and share it at will?

I feel like "Bitcoin", "Blockchain" and similar words have nothing to do with Metaverse. I feel like it is easy to make one wrong (Like SL), and i feel like a lot of people and companies are missing the point. The thing you need is a place to be with friends where you can do stuff with them, that is accessible and as little restrictions as possible. Only the ones that meet all thee are successful. Also everyone keeps forgetting about this but, Club Penguin from all games, had this same premise

Yes, Club Penguin too had the same premise, you’re right. And blockchain’s decentralized nature could find its application in the metaverse since the idea of the metaverse is not to have one single governing body owning the metaverse but to have everyone - and thus no one - “owning” it. Trust without needing to trust anyone. That’s how blockchain transactions work. Btw, I’ll mention Club Penguin in my next upcoming video but in a entirely different context :) Stay tuned and thank you for your comment. 🙏

So the examples of Roblox, Fortnite, and Minecraft, they all create their own expansive world where players interact, play, create, socialize etc. These game worlds have their own ecosystems, economies, experiences and so on. In this sense, they each represent a separate “metaverse”. but right now all these game worlds are not interconnected. These games only make sense on their own. But the broader vision of the metaverse, there’s this expectation of a more unified virtual world, where assets, skins, avatars can move between these different virtual worlds. Right now platforms like Fortnite, Minecraft, Roblox all operate independently, without such interoperability. But nevertheless, we are making steps towards this grand unified “universe” idea. Hope that makes sense.

Minecraft is not a metaverse its a video game with fan hosted servers most of the servers are not hosted and owned my Mojang and a single player game
