Bird had an unbelievable night during that game. It was Bird's way of paying back Erving after "Dr. J operated on Larry Bird in game 7 of the 1982 Eastern Conference Finals. And then, the 1983 Philadelphia 76ers dominating the league the following year. Bird was simply letting Dr. J know at that time it was his time to shine. It was just gamesmanship that got a bit out of control between the two competitors. It was a great moment in sports. Basketball shows talked about that fight all year long.

Flat out, it wasn't Bird's trash talking that caused Dr J to attack Bird. It was the fact that Bird was embarrassing Dr J by severely outplaying him. Trash talking may have been a factor, but Dr J wouldn't have attacked Bird if Bird wasn't having such an outstanding game head-to-head against him.

My favorite NBA fight was a little known fight between Manute Bol and Muggsy Bogues. Manute was trash talking Muggsy even though they were on the same team. Muggsy got mad and punched Manute in the knee cap, and the fight was on. Muggsy punching the hell out of Manutes knee caps, and Manute swinging at air because he couldn’t reach down low enough to hit Muggsy. Well out of the blue Spud Webb jumps into the melee and wraps his arms around one of Manutes legs and holds him while Muggsy punches Manutes knee cap. Well they finally broke it up. Manute was treated for kneecap contusions, and Muggsy and Spud were seen low fiving as they were escorted off the court. Muggsy and Manute were fined $7000 a piece, and Spud was fined $5000. When Spud was asked why he held Manutes leg while Muggsy punched his knee cap Spud just shrugged his shoulders and said “ us lil fellers knees too stay together, it’s kinda like those lil fellers in the wizard of oz fighting that ole witch. I’m ain’t saying Manute is a witch, but he was fightin one of my munchkin bros”. Well, Spud was fined another $1000 for calling an NBA lil feller a munchkin. We all know it is not politically correct to call an NBA lil feller a munchkin.

I saw the fight live on TV. You have to realized that Doc was damn near his mid 30s, and Bird was in his mid 20s, when this took place. When you're in your mid 30s, bad games are going to come out of nowhere, like the shanks on the back nine after having a great front nine. Anyway, I was SHOCKED to see Julius start throwing hands. Just wasn't his style. But in the end, with other Celtic, Sixers match ups, both showed their classiness and respect when playing against each other.

Here are the accumulated stats in 80,81,82,83,84 in season Sixers vs Celtics games(30 games total). Dr J had 746 p on 28 games , 26,6 ppg on 37.9 min pg and 20,9 fg attempts pg. Bird had 685 p on 30 games , 22,8 ppg on 40.4 min pg and 20,9 fg attempts pg. Dr J had 9 x 30+ ppg as 1X45 p game, 2X37 p games, 3X36 p games, 1x35 p game less points scored 18.. Bird Had 6 X30+ ppg as 1X36 p game , less scoring 1x10 p game, 1x11 p game ,2x12 pg , 2x13 pg and 1X15 p game. in 1980 Dr J averaged 33,6 ppg vs Celtics and in 1981 29,1 ppg in 1982 25,6 ppg , in 83 22,4 ppg and in 84 23,1 ppg. Bird averaged the most 23,6 ppg in 1984 on 42,5 min pg and 24,5 fg attempts. Dr J min and fg attemts were gradually dropping in the presense of Toney and Moses while Bird's min and Fg attempts were rising.. Note that 84 stands for 83-84 season and similarly for the rest.. This is ultimate proof that Bird never dominated face to face Dr J untill Dr J turned 34/35 and that season he had that miserable game with 6 points and all this talk is echo chamber nonsense and urban fairy tales!

the stupidest myth of Nba by far , that is created and reproduced in the modern day social media comment section is that Larry Bird outplayed Julius Erving or had a greater impact on the Game in general..the whole thing doesnot consider anything that was going on real time but it is solely based in the period after Dr J became too old to lead the league as its brightest star and Larry Bird had his moment along Magic Johnson as Nba MARQUEE names till the new sherriff came in town ,namely MJ..anyone can see that in real time Dr J was the biggest star and a better scorer(25 ppg on .53 fg for 80,81,82),blocker,steals and not far behind in assists(4+ vs 5+ of Larry) on a better fg at least till 83 when Moses came along and he had to give up some offense AGAIN bringing his fg attempts to 16.5 per game..still he averaged 21.5 ppg..meanwhile Larry Bird was not a 19 year old rookie ,he came in the league in 1980 at 23 years old and the first time he exceeded Doc stat wise was 1983 but got swept by the Bucks AND accorign to modern NBA narrative and reasoning..SWEPT BY SIDNEY MONCRIEF..meanwhile Doc produced a highlight reel night in night out got in the conference finals 6 times out of 7 and 4 time in the finals and lost twice to a super loaded Lakers team with 4 allstars including 2 all time greats(Kareem 25 ppg,Magic 19 ppg,Wilkes 21 ppg,Nixon17 ppg) and a 3 time scoring champion (Bob Mcadoo), as the FIFTH option ,4 to 2 delivering some great performances and some of the best Dunks,Lay ups in the history of the game..Just see the 1983 all star mvp stats and 1984 all star stats he had when he lost the mvp to Thomas(21 pnts,15 asists) with 34 points, 8reb, 5 asts, 2 stls and 2 blocks on .64 shooting..He also lost to Blazers in 1977 just because of mega idiot coach Gene Shue asking him to tone it down offensively to 17 fga per game from 23 he had in ABA and toxic, wanna be first options, bricking really bad BELOW .4 IN 2pnts FIELD GOAL SHOTS, McGinnis and Free in 1977 finals and 78 conference finals again, getting robbed a ring and finals mvp title, instant NBA domination, from his own team, despite averaging 30 ppg on .54 shooting in those finals! The Sixers never saw any daylight ever again since Dr J left that organisation, that also burned another all time great career CB with mediocre team and unable to understand and seize the moment managment and coaching stuff! Definetely the first and top 2 all time show the game ever witnessed although he was a team player that never played for stats and personnal glory!

Bird and magic objectively propelled the sport into what it would become today, and it started with their college game, which to this day i believe still holds the record for highest watched game(maybe of all time iirc but at thr very least in collegiate history), of course people were riding that rivalry all the way into the nba, and because it was a white superstar and a black superstar(not that it should matter but lets be real: it did to the public if not the players themselves) it entranced the entire country, the good Dr. Is and was a superstar no doubt, but im speaking directly to your claim about whos had the bigger impact on the game, the bird and magic rivalry was the single greatest kickstarted for the nbas popularity, its an objective fact, more people tuned in for that than for Dr j's reign of superstardom, thats not to say he didnt have ANY impact on the game, hes on the short list of players who have had the most, but again to your claim of single greateat impact? No, he did not.

Dr. J was the most overrated over hyped player of all time, good but no where near the level of greatness of others. Bird outplayed him as did many Stars back then and as usual Doc couldn't handle it.

Everyone has an opinion about which players are rated better. I ask fans that think Dr. J was overrated, just watch game 7 of the 1982 EC Finals. Dr. J outplayed Larry Bird in that game 7.

@@john-keithrailey1424 Some basketball fans have the most overrated opinions about some players. I have no idea how and why Dr. J was considered overrated considering he helped lead the 76ers to the NBA Finals the first year he entered the league. The 76ers made the playoffs every year Erving played for the 76ers. If fans carefully watch the 1980-thru-1982 ECF between the Boston Celtics vs Phila. 76ers during that period, Erving consistently made Larry Bird have some bad shooting games. Game 7 from the 1982 ECF displayed one of Erving's best performances as the closed out the Celtics in Boston.
