Rivals Reunited | McHale & Dr. J

Спорт

During the early 1980s no NBA rivalry was more heated than the Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers. Yahoo Sports got Hall of Famers Kevin McHale and Julius "Dr. J" Erving to sit down and rewatch and relive some of the greatest battles between these historic franchises.

The first I time I saw Julius Erving was 1970 when UMass played Penn. The Quakers had Corky Calhoun, a 6-7 big guard who was a defensive specialist, who Julius just ate up and spit out even though Penn won at the Palestra. Then, in college at Philadelphia Textile a fellow gym rat told me he had seen Julius from playing at the Rucker playground in Harlem and called him best ever. We would take road trips while in college to see him in Virginia as a Squire or in New York as a Net. The most exciting day of my life as a basketball fan was the day the Sixers signed him. I named a dog I rescued “Dr. J.” because he jumped up and down 2-3 feet whenever he saw me. Class, all the way.

@@Ryan2022 Most of them are aholes. When asked why the 1991 Pistons walked off the court after getting swept by the Bulls, Isaiah Thomas and Laimbeer responded that’s what the Celtics had done to them in 1988. We all know that’s bs. The reason the 1988 Celtics walked off was bc the Pistons were dirty. The Pistons were dirty mofos and sore losers.

1982 was the when Andrew Toney became the Boston Strangler. 20 years after Elgin Baylor hung 61 on the Celtics in a game 5.

The competion was so intense,,, there was nothing like it... but the level of respect was undeniable. Nobody was a loser. U compete... amd play to win. May the best team win. That what it all about.

For some reason people don't put Dr. in there with Bird and Magic. It was those 3 that carried the NBA for a long time.

And frankly, Moses too. Though maybe not media-wise. While Moses won 3 mvps, he probably easily could have had five.

In ’87 while visiting Boston I was sitting in a small local tap room looking at a picture of Larry Bird, and the bar tender leaned over and said ….. “da gratest basketball playa’ that eva lived!” I just looked up at him and said “The Doc!” He looked back at me and said …..”um, okay!……you must be from Philly!” Then he asked me about Marvin Hagler. I told him I saw him get beat by a Philly fighter named Bobby Boogaloo Watts. Then the guy sitting next to me turns and says he fought Bobby Watts! Then all three of us said we had seen Julius in college too! Well, he was the owner, so the bar tender, the old boxer and I drank all night talking about basketball and Julius Erving……in Boston! It was one of the best nights in my life, talking basketball to other fans of the Doc…… free beer too! Philly fans are a lot like Boston fans; we have one thing in common, a hatred for New York sports teams

awesome Doc was a class dude. Bird tortured him at the end but 81 and 82 Doc was great. So fun to watch. Had a sweet finger roll. I'm a Boston fan so McHale is in the rafters, enough said.
