How languages are learned (with Patsy Lightbown)

In the world of language there are few people as experienced, or as respected, as Patsy Lightbown, Distinguished Professor Emerita at Concordia University in Canada.
She has been working in the field of language teaching and language learning for more than 40 years as a researcher, writer, editor, and consultant and she literally wrote the book on how languages are learned.
In this interview we talk about language acquisition, language learning, language teaching and what life has taught her about the way education works.
I hope you enjoy it!

The reason why I am learning English is that I want to understand and get information about topics I'm interested for. World and scientific news. I'm not good yet but I try to do my best. She is right. 3 month and also 3 years is not enough for this. I watched also your video where you are talking about the same. Your thoughts are the similar because you're not trying to play with our expectations. Thank you for your honesty first off all and thank you for your care.

the final answer was amazing!!! I literally cried, special with the part that she says " when you have to interrupt your language and have to use another you feel you are no longer the same person" I agree is so hard when you can`t express yourself in the same way that you do in your own language and it is a frustrating feeling.

very rich conversation. I studied French for 8 years, and I watched movies in french almost all my life and I'm not good yet, so I agree totally with her. to me knowing many languages nowadays, makes you an international person who sees in ND i mean if you know 3 languages so you see the world in 3D, but if you know just your dialect you see the world in black and white.

If she dit not simplify her way of speaking to facilitate the comprehension, then I can affirm that I understand English more than I thought so far, and it’s partly thanks to you Christian. I totally agree with her that learning a language is not a cumulative process; it is rather an interactive and cyclical process. Acquiring a language is a lifetime project, she said. Yes she is right if we consider the fact that we still have something to acquire in our own native languages. It was an enlightening and valuable interview. Thank you.🙏

Here is my short story. It was 30 years ago I was studying at school and the subject as English language was introduced to us. I remember my passion for making my own word cards, I remember my eagerness to memorize the lyrics of Freddy Mercury's masterpieces for analysing it after. My life has changed drastically since then. And the main reason was that I wanted to be different to my classmates, my course mates at the University, my colleagues at work. Yes, to gain my own identity.

The end of the interview helped me to understand why for the first time it is important for us to accommodate the Spanish needs in the many children who come to the US. I never thought before how frustrating at that critical time in learning all the things that children need to understand and to be hampered and blocked by a language they don't know. Wow. That shakes me to the bone and put tears in my eyes.

I am a beginner french learner and I got a jolt of excitement when I could write a simple french comment made of several sentences that communicated what I meant. I needed to look up several spellings and get help from google translate on a few words. Even more exciting the french podcaster responded to me with a comment that I could read. It was an amazing experience. I appreciate knowing that it really takes a lot of time to learn a language. I think this is the first time I have heard that. I was thinking there was something wrong with my ability to hear syllables. I like using Duo to learn along with Steve Kaufman's LingQ. I actually like kind of plodding my way through Duo's lessons. I guess it comes from years of being in school. But I also like going free range and using LinkQ to accumulate native content. This is a great interview. Thank you.

Christian, thanks for picking up such interesting questions. I also want to gratitude Professor Emerita. The most important information for me was said nearly at the end: language is a crucial part of our identity. When language is interrupted by some way, you suddenly find yourself feeling not like yourself. This what so many adult language learners experience, they suddenly find themselves feeling childlike and dependent and they need to build up their confidence again in the new language. I found it so true from my own experience. Christian, thanks again for such wonderful interview series.

The purpose of learning a language must to be like, to understand others and to make others understand you, that's all. About understanding grammar, conditions, structures, it will come through your speaking experiance, you won't even bat an eye when you understand all thees things. It doesn't mean that you don't need to learn the grammar and other things, but to realise, for what you need this language.

That was a really nice interview, it was an interesting point of view approach. How can I listen to your podcast offline? Can I download them? I quiet understand English as a listener but when it comes to speak or read the case change, even when I am reading children books I understand the concept but when I try to translate to my children I blocked and make me feel very frustrated, so my question is how can I teach English to my kids in a daily basis to improve my English as well I am teaching them? Should I read the book to them even if they don't understand what am I reading? Or should I read and translate to them? They always said to me " mum I don't understand what are you saying" and I can't motivate them to keep listening. Please help me up with some piece of device. Thanks.

Thank you Christian for this interesting interview. Patsy Lightbown touched on a number of key areas in my opinion (Krashen, extended reading, meaning-based teaching, non-sequential learning etc) which made me watch to the end. I was a little disappointed that the interview seemed to focus a lot on the problems associated with textbook learning and would have been fascinated to listen to Lightbown develop her views on language acquisition. Anyway it was a great video and much appreciated. I wonder if you could do a similar one with Blaine Ray? On another note, I saw you were in Turin in a recent video. Is that where you live? For some reason I thought you were based in Australia but now that I have just figured that the name of your channel is written in Italian I’m connecting the dots. The reason I ask is because I am in Pinerolo and I just feel we would have quite a lot to talk about. Take care, keep up the fantastic work, and hope to hear from you soon! Alexander

Amazing talk/ interview! Thank you so much for posting this video! I am an English teacher from Russia. I've started posting English classes for beginners on my channel (Little Angel Reader) where I use the information you're talking about without even realizing it - just from the personal experience of what works and what doesn't. :)

I totally agree, language is such a big identity factor and it should be allowed to stay with the individuals more, I wish California had more bilingual elementary schools

Hi Christian! I hope you're better , I don't know if you've already talked on previous videos about certificates of english like FCE or CAE, IELTS etc. Excuseme if you did. I'm going to study for them for I'm going to use the internet and your videos to exercise. Could you recommend any structure, steps or scheme to follow to prepare in a self-taught way to perform the first certificate of english? I'll appreciate your recomendations.

The last point she made, from 29:45 to 30:25, is so crucial. It sounds logical and therefore obvious, but instead I believe that often it is no more than a hidden sensation. Through study, I knew English quite well before moving to an English-speaking country; however the variety and depth of the ways in which you want to express yourself in your 24h/365d life just cannot be anticipated, and you find yourself as living with the handbrake on. The same applied to when I started living in Spain for a while starting from zero Spanish. Now in my case I can spot this feeling but I acknowledge it has been mild - because anyway I already knew English, and Spanish is relatively easy and intuitive to learn from Italian. But if I think of all the those who find themselves in tougher situations and start to feel like they're really not being who they are, and on top of that might also be seen as banal by the people surrounding them, I see how hard it can be.

I watched a video where children casually answers a reporter, and was so spontaneous that I felt a little I was listening some of my own language, because there are centain universalities in conversation in general. I am searching some materials with casual/normal communication, and the unique kind of content I can figure out is interview, but it also have a little strain because is shoting. So can you recommend some kind of content with real and interesting conversation?

Ciao! I just discovered you, you are super funny and your lessons are not boring. I'm Italian, I've been leaving in San Diego for 3 years but I am a hopeless English learner :-( Probably I don't have the English language gene

There is something specific I would like to know: I read a lot and listen to podcasts in Spanish. In your opinion, is it best to read/listen to something you barely understand or something where you understand most of it? I've found that I often get rather depressed about not being able to understand anything from something too difficult but then don't feel as though I'm stretching myself at all reading something too simple. Any ideas with regards to ideal difficulty levels?

No one replied, so I will. Your input needs to be comprehensible. I + 1. Just slightly beyond what you completely understand. If it is incomprehensible, you won't be able to figure out words from context and it won't be fun. So, basically go with the easier listening and reading. The exception might be if there is something you are super motivated to read yet is beyond your level. If you are super-motivated about something, you might be able to get through it and learn something from it. Also, it is possible to make harder texts comprehensible through reading it multiple times. Or by studying the vocabulary ahead of time. Or by reading it in English first. Good luck.
