02:30 5 simple rules to have a fluent conversation: 1. A signal that you want to speak 2. Recognize the right moment to speak 3. Use the appropriate structure to take control 4. Recognize other people desire to speak 5. Give up control The simple rule in English: 05:48 One-Second Rule Silence more than one second is signal of one of the following: - you don't understand what the other person is saying - you don't like what the other person is saying - you are about to say something NEGATIVE 06:30 If you want to eliminate pauses - there are 4 essential things to learn: 1. Take control (get your turn) 2. Hold control (continue speaking) 3. Pass control (finish your turn) 4. Support control (help the other person to continue speaking) 07:18 Ways to Taking control: - buffers (you know, well, umm) - interruption (competetive) - reinforcers (yeah, really, wow) 08:09 Ways to Holding control: - Buffers (like, or something, uh) - Simultaneous talking 09:06 Ways to Passing control: - intonation/pitch/loudness - buffers (you get the idea, so on, anyway) - asking questions (elevate to next) - SILENCE is the WORST way - do not do it! 10:22 Ways to Supporting control: - reinforcers (omg, amazing, umm-hm) - asking for clarification (really, is it right) - interruption (cooperative) it's super important Few ways to Practice: 14:18 alone - using video/radio/podcast interview (no films, no TV series) 16:31 the best way - using another person (counting, telling a story by story cube) 19:20 worksheet game from the TOEFLtastic

Thank u Christian for such useful videos. I am a professional language coach and I know 6 languages, three of them like a native speaker. I can say all these languages I have learned on my own thanks to my own language learning method that I have developed during my education at the university. I agree almost with all what Christian explain in his videos. U can learn languages just by using them not by analyzing or memorizing words... Go grab all your grammar and useless textbooks and burn them. Read just real short stories and listen their audio from a native speaker. But not just one time. Read and listen 10 at least until u can use all phrases and words in real time and with real people. just it will provide and give you fluency and confidence in speaking. I am learning English just for a year and 3 months by using only my method and for that time I could achieve the almost upper intermediate level and I relatively confidently teach riding motorbike abroad for English native speakers. Fluence much more important than grammar. Grammar themselves comes to you over a period of time little by little if you are really listening to native curiously and carefully. if you already got higher then intermediate level and have fluency then u can sit and learn grammar yourself in order to speak more correctly. But don't do it NEVER at the beginning because it just will hesitate you and destroyed all your mindset and motivation. Enjoying speaking and using language even u know just 10 words!!

Just pause it :) I was writing down all your speech as a dictation to complicate task with listening every single detail and typing to the file and kill even more rabbits with one shoot when at the 15:19 moment I heard the moto of the work - just pause it :) then I realized that I am killing one more rabbit - I have been heard your sentence, made pause when I thought you are going to stop speaking and pause with the space button for writing the sentence thus I had been doing exactly the practice that worth doing to practice conversation skills. This comment also just as a part of the class you gave. Thank you for the class!

I'm an English teacher here in Brazil and I can clearly see what Christian meant in this video. I have troubles expressing myself with begginer students, I mean I lost my spontaneity because there's no taking turns. Course I know they're still learning but for so many times I questioned how fluent I really am. Now I have this great explanation on something that I instinctly kinda noticed already. Thanks so much, teacher.

It's unbelievable the amount of topics a language can have. But the most unbelieveble thing is that it is a piece of cake for any child to learn as many languages as they are exposed to, even an "alien language" they would probably learn it without any problem.
