How Kung Fu Panda Tricked An Entire Generation

Ойын-сауық

Does anyone remember Fung Fu Panda (2008)? This animated movie is known today as a cult classic. From DreamWorks Animation with memorable performances by Jack Black, Seth Rogan, and Angelina Jolie, this film stars characters such as Po, Master Shifu, Tai Lung, and Oogway.
ALSO, THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME I WATCHED THIS MOVIE IN AGES. IT'S HIGHLY RATED AND ACTUALLY KINDA DEEP. IT'S METAPHORICAL AND SURPRISINGLY ADULT WITH ITS THEMES... BUT IF YOU'RE A KID, YOU'D STILL LIKE IT.

very solid film but you should definatly give the sequil a chance its main villain shen is very effective, id say easily equil to tai lung if not more impactful getting more time throughout the film to share his views and his past and failings. and the message that comes with all that.

Shifu's mistake with Tai Lung was raising him telling him that he WOULD be destined for greatness and WILL be the dragon warrior, and therefore using that as a reason to overtrain him. It became his dream to be the dragon warrior. Its really hard to be promised something your whole life and not get it, it makes you feel like it was all for nothing. So thats how Tai Lung felt. He has low self esteem because he spent his whole life following the scroll, thinking the he could only be something with the scroll and without it he's nothing, ignoring all the amazing things he could already do. When Po first sees his reflection in the scroll: "It's blank." When Tai Lung first sees his reflection in the scroll: "It's nothing!" There's a reason they said those two different things. Po see's himself as a blank slate with everything ahead of him, and Tai Lung see's himself as nothing cause he felt that thats what he was without the scroll. Also the whole "those often meet their destiny on the road they take to avoid it" thing is referenced with the fact that Tai Lung wouldn't have escaped if Shifu hadn't sent that messenger, if the guards hadn't shot the spear that broke the chain in attempt to stop Tai Lung escaping. Also these quotes from Ooway are explored and references a lot in the 2nd one, especially the one about living in the present, that one is very prominent with the villian. Id love for you to watch it, its a real tearjerker with just how broken you realise these characters really are. Edit: Also the reason why Tai Lung couldn't use his fancy attack on Po at the end was because it was a nerve attack, a character said so earlier on. Po is too large to be affected by nerve stuff, foreshadowed by them struggling to give him accupuncture.

The whole thing with Po constantly eating or yknow po doing the splits for monkey's cookies is as oogway mentions earlier in the movie directed towards po "You eat when you are upset" his way of coping is to eat and when shifu learns that his way of coping can also be turned into a way to help him train. Its why when po says he's not hungry when he finally beats shifu in his training means, he's more happy and confident

The kung fu panda movies ended up being my directions in growth too so I know what you mean. From the first movie: having to believe in what I do and how it’s special because I think it’s special, and also believe in myself. To the second movie: dealing with a traumatic event that I had long forgotten until something triggered flashes of memories and struggling now with ptsd and then later letting it be that it happened and then healing and finding strength in the fact that despite what happened it doesn’t make me who I am and that it is “the rest of my story.. who I choose to be”. And then the third movie I connect with in that I know myself more than ever, not as any labels, archetypes or characters but as a well rounded individual. I know now what meaning I own because I give that to myself, and therefore I know what it means to be me and to do what I do how I do it. My favourite trilogy since childhood.

The thing is, Kung Fu Panda isn't a movie for adults nor is it a movie for kids. It's the classic family movie, a movie ment to be approachable for both adults and children in a way that both are able to enjoy it together but for different reasons. Those are increadibly rare now-a-days as most movies aim for only one of those among their target audiences, but they used to be more common, especially in the late 90s - early 2000s. That's part of what makes it such an excellent and long lasting movie. It doesn't really time gate itself, it's premise is simple with the art instead focused in the execution, and through that along with its visuals and humor it is easily digested for kids who can then draw from it as they grow up, while the depth and concepts are deep enough while also relatable enough that both adults and teens can find something to enjoy in it. And honestly, this kind of goes for the whole trilogy. The second has less for the adults, but there is still enough there to not be bored, while the third has less in the department of story premise for the kids but make up for it with more spectacle and humor, while the themes and messages are more aimed towards late teens and parents. The family movie formula is hard to get right, especially to get great, and it's remarkably impressive that Dreamworks didn't just do it once, but three times in a row. In fact, Dreamworks used to be the king of family movies for a while. But now people mostly remember the visuals and humor, missing the depth, and if you only go for the visuals and humor you end up making a kids film, not a family film.

7:40 I have to point out here that you missed a key detail, and it will likely be something you will look upon in later viewings: that paradox is in itself the entire point of the scene. Master Oogway didn't tell them that they had to send the messenger to prevent the escape from occurring - that was Master Shifu's take-away from the exchange, and his taken decision alone. What Oogway said was that that was going to happen. Shifu tried to prevent it, and his actions were what enabled it to happen. It could be that Tai Lung would had been able to escape in some other manner, but the point is that, in his effort to prevent the predicted outcome, Shifu rushed headlong into it.

Fun fact: the scene in 4:29 is a direct reference to a chinese emperor (which i dont remenber the name) who wanted to go to the moon, so he told his worker guys to tie fireworks to his chair, then he sat in it and told them to light the fireworks, he died unfortunately but his body was never found, although Po didnt die in this scene Correct me if im wrong, i typed this from memory

Whadya MEAN Remember??? KFP has been in the public eye constantly ever since with Legends of Awesomeness running between 2011-2016, The Paws of Destiny running from 2018-2019, and most recently (And VERY awesomely) The Dragon Knight between 2022-2023. And that's in addition to the two other films. While the series' might not be canon to the movies (as is often the case), unlike many others of it's kind, the film star Jack Black would ALWAYS voice Po throughout movies, AND the TV/Netflix series. A rare treat for fans of animation as the Hollywood stars that made the movie rarely reprise their role, such as was the case with the two seasons of Monsters vs. Aliens, or MVA for short.

Yeah the whole Po eating a lot and then giving food back to Shifu when his training was finished wasn’t only fat jokes but more based on what Oogway told Po earlier in the film ‘You eat when you are upset.’ Po is a panda and he was very upset the next day after his and Shifu’s confrontation so he began eating a lot. His training finished and Shifu finally recognized him so Po gave the dumpling back because he wasn’t ‘hungry’ anymore. (Actuality, he wasn’t upset anymore)

Yeah, that was a good movie. Never really focused on the depth of movies, but back then was pretty much the golden age of insightful cartoon that tackled deep subjects in a way you could only appreciate when you looked back, whether it be the old sonic satam, Gargoyles, or even Zoids: CC.
