How Kipo Did What Steven Universe Couldn't! (Or Any Other Cartoon.)

Фильм және анимация

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts is one of the most well-written cartoons out right now, it draws inspiration from many shows before it, but there is one thing that Kipo did that even other great shows like Steven Universe couldn't pull off.

In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Firelord Ozai was not redeemed, but instead had his bending taken away and was imprisoned for what is to be assumed the rest of his life. Initially, Aang thought he could reason with him, then was nearly convinced the only way to stop him was to take his life. Aang couldn't accept this, and ended up discovering a way to take someone's bending away permanently.

Yeah but his solution was just given to him. If based solely off his actions and efforts without the Deus Ex Machina of the lion turtle coming out of nowhere with a type of bending not even hinted at and the fact that a random rock pushed Aang into the avatar state he wouldn't have stopped the fire lord and his stubbornness to hold on to desire not to kill would have lead to much more suffering and destruction.

@@claytongriffith8323 Energy Bending was not a Deus Ex Machina. There where actually several points that foreshadowed it. First, the swamp episode where Aang traces Appa's energy through the tree to find him. Second, Guru Patik helping him clear his chakras. In doing so he was controlling the energy flow through his body. Both of these were lessons in Energy Bending, though we didn't know that at the time. Nor was the rock sending him into the Avatar State as nonsensical as it seems. It was akin to acupressure, which is very much in line worh the show's eastern influence. By pushing hard enough in just the right spot, it released all the knotted up energy, allowing it to flow freely.

The way you said that the message of not everyone could be redeemed really got me thinking on other shows that have done something like that. It might be weird but this reminded me of a speech in Samurai Jack season 5. Jack is remembering a moment of his past when he saw his father kill some assassins. His father then sits him down and tells him: "The decisions you make and the actions that follow are a reflection of who you are." This small sentence means a lot even when it's too short. It emphasizes on free will and the consequences that come from making choices with that free will. He doesn't sugarcoat it or make it sound like killing is bad. He tells his son how it is. He had a choice, fight to protect his wife and son or not. He gave the assassins a choice, to leave or to fight. Trying to see the good in others is a good thing and try to redeem them, but when they choose to hurt others you have to stop them.

But I think that the show highlights something that this video doesn't express right... Kipo wasn't wrong entirely, there was a way to bring him back, and had she met him earlier she might have succeeded. She was just too late. And that's different from being just plain wrong. I do admit this each children cartoon shows repeat, they just some main characters you never change they way. Longest and maybe the oldest one is The Joker and The batman. How Batman wants to change joker into Reformed better person than clown prince of Gotham yet The killer joke told back story and the effects of his experience drove him to be joker. Now we got Batman who laughs character is more deadly than The joker but I digress. You can never change someone only them can change they self. That how Steven Universe drop the ball on. Good show but I prefer Adventure time and Regular Show because heavy hit in about people cannot change who they are. G1 transformers and cgi beast wars did touch on it as well. So there are really lot of shows made episodes like The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air with will father just being a deadbeat. I don't think kipo was the first nor it going to be the last to touch about changing people subject especially part of you never going to change someone and what they have become.

Instead they are all on this redditesk-hate-bandwagon just because CN hiatus basically ruined their zeitgeist, so some flaws take down everything the show did right somehow. It's like if the Lion turtle thing not being that much foreshadowed makes Avatar TLAB bad, which is bullshit. I call bullshit. The message of STF is good at its core, however the execution was poor, the timing was rushed, they pulled stuff from out of their asses and it was generally very unsatisfying to watch. The struggle of declining mental health is a very sensitive topic, and everything was forced and rushed to the barebones. I know what it feels like to slowly go insane and having a huge mental breakdown, and that just didn't fit it. Of course everyone's experience is different, however they handled it horribly. A good message doesn't necessarily make a show good.

Aang in last airbender realized that zuko was not a friend, but when zuko rescues him as the blue spirit and then Aang rescues him, he thinks they could have been in another timeline. Then zuko goes through a lot of changes and further betrayal by the fire kingdom, seemingly abandoning it. But hes still lost and angry, and when he has the opportunity to protect and help Aang at the end of season 2, he chooses Azula and what he believes is his honor instead. This comes just after a moment where he talked with katara, and it seemed his redemption was at hand. After choosing the fire nation and what he believed was honor, he went through realization as well. Zuko found he wasn't happy there, angrier and more confused than ever, finally and truly turning his back on his father and sister to try to do what was right. But he still had to earn and prove his redemption to the team. He didnt just get accepted open arms, having to pay time and time again over the course of the show for his own wrongdoings. Zuko's redemption arcs is one of the best in existence because he messes up. He chooses wrong. He suffers and learns and discovers new things about himself as he searches for the truth. When he finally finds it, it isnt just handed to him. It shows all the pain and work he's gone through. Ozai gets no such chance. He is beyond redemption, but what's more, he shows no desire to change. He is fully convinced of his righteousness, just as the doctor is in Kipo. I love steven universe, and I love that every single gem and person is given a chance for redemption. For many it happens quickly, but all of them still go through similar processes of messing up, learning, and redeeming themselves, even if we dont always see it. It's a bit more simplified in some ways, but it still shows the characters trying to learn and be better. Except for Kevin. Because Kevin gets a chance to be redeemed, and he stays the same pompous loser despite multiple chances to learn. He, like Ozai and the doctor, is unwilling to change or learn. Even steven cant help everyone.

There is also another thing Kipo did that SU kinda failed at. Connecting a somewhat politically charged plotline with a interpersonal family conflict. We get to know Scarelamane as this tyrannical maniac who is building a army in season 1. Kipo showed us all of his disspicable actions upfront and then put in things that humanized him. Giving us context to his actions and how they directly are linked to the family dynamic he shared with Kipo without said even knowing. What they *didn't* do is spent *5* seasons establishing him as a genocidal dictator who were part of a intricate political conflict between the ruling class and a civil rights movement only to suddenly shift that dynamic into a interpersonal family conflict where the villains are forgiven for their disspicable actions, which were never given a motive other then 'they were made to behave that way', because 'They aren't so bad. See? They are sad about their dead sister. Humanizing them is all we have to do to justify a redemption.' (Yes I am still bitter) Kipo didn't waste it's viewers time by needlessly drawing the plot out or suddenly drastically shifting the focus of the conflict at hand. Instead the vowed another layer into the conflict, making Hugo more compelling character then the Diamonds could have ever been.

You know that never really establish the Diamonds as "genocidal" dictators either. We never actually see any aliens in the show beyond the Gems and Gems dont even know what grass is, so who knows they killed? Also, the 'they were made to behave that way' motivation works fine since it's very much consistent to what we saw with other Gems like Pearl and Peridot. They don't change their behavior because Gems literally have never heard of 'change' before. I don't see why the Diamonds would be exempt from this rule Also, they were never actually forgiven for their actions. The Crystal Gems clearly don't really want them around and we saw Steven contemplate killing White Diamond in one episode. They just settle with the Diamonds not causing trouble. Also, the fact that Scarlamnage is still saved by Lio does imply he will be given redemption next season

@@ShinobiPXO The show made it quite clear through multiple characters on multiple occasions that the Diamonds were genocidal. In "It Could have been Great" Peridot lays out the plan of colonization for earth. Garnet states outright that all of earth's indigenous life would have been destroyed. In "Jungle Moon" we see Yellow Diamond order her forces to destroy the organic life on the Jungle Moon planet. The Diamonds released the shattering robonoids beneath Homeworld to hunt down and exterminate the Off Colors. We see Blue Diamond chastise Pink for her lame excuses as to why she couldn't complete her colony. Pink complained that there were too many organics and human cities were too hard to dismantle. Considering that this was around 3,000 BCE Pink's excuses were lame indeed. Yellow Diamond sends Peridot to earth to check on the Cluster. The Cluster is a mass grave/geoweapon built and deployed with the expressed purpose of destroying the earth and every living thing on it. Yellow Diamond explicitly tells Peridot that she wants earth to die and that she will take immense pleasure in erasing earth from their star maps. Blue Diamond told us that the corrupting attack was intended to obliterate every gem on the surface of the planet. Homeworld maintains as part of its inventory injectors containing poison capable of killing all organic life on a planet. If these behaviors don't constitute genocide I'd really like to know what behaviors do.

In Jungle Moon we only see a planet filled with alien animals, which the Diamonds chose not to kill. Also, Jasper does not know the difference between people and grass, so what "organics" do you think they killed? You have noticed that Gems are stupid right? They don't what names are and they don't know what a 'My Dad' is. They don't even know plants from people, since Peridot thought corn could talk. If they saw a forest of trees, they likely would call that a city. Sorry, but it's seem clear they don't really know much about organics full stop We Yellow wants the Earth gone for closure and again, she doesn't even know that organics are still living on it because she that stupid. However, everything that happened from then on were the actions of Scarlemagne and Scarlemagne alone. HE was the tyrant. HE was the murderer. HE pushed Kipo into what he thought was a vat of gold. HE wanted HER to push their father into the gold. At the end of the day, he wasn’t redeemed BECAUSE of those actions. But, I think there’s a small chance he might help or in season three. What is genius about the antagonist in this season is that you know maybe there is little hope left for Hugo, but at the same time you can't help but to feel bad for him. There are human qualities to him, his feelings of abandonment and resentment broke him, and his only purpose was just to be a test subject. Even if this is the beginning of a redemption arc, I truly love how they didn't try to make him turn good immediately, and made him do something terrible without reversing his development. This is why he really is a compelling antagonist. Whether he gets redeemed or not, the show managed to make a great villain without butchering the stakes unlike Steven Universe.

He’s not portrayed as being right, but you can see where his anger and resentment comes from When Kipo turns from him, its not because she’s rejecting him but because his actions and the fact he’s forcing others to accept him or else, is wrong. Hugo/Scarlamagne interprets this as being rejected, again and the idea that no one chooses him unless he controls them. so he acts out in anger. What i do like is that you can see something change in him when he’s lead away by the Timber cats, as he noticed that Kipo could have run and saved herself, but chose to stay behind to save all the mutes himself included.

That's where the issue is. The Lich is extinction incarnate. He's not a creature with reason or compassion, he wants nothing but oblivion for all life. For cases like that, you cannot use reasoning or defusing the situation. The only way is to kill him... or turn him into a giant baby. But even then that didn't stop him.

I think that's kind of the thing there, like...they literally CAN'T be reasoned with, on any level. They are primal. Forces. It's one thing to pose this about a literal world ending event, it's another about another sentient being, one with more complex drives and motivations.

  • @Joseph_Drew_III

    @Joseph_Drew_III

@OmegaGuess I think there’s a sliding scale when it comes to that: Golb has very little (if any) cognitive function, so yes, you are correct. The Lich IS capable of higher thought, but doesn’t have his own will, being a scholar of Golb. Again, you’re completely correct. But it gets a lot trickier with Orgalorg. He’s a cosmic entity like the other two, but he has not only higher thought, but also his own plans and motivations. Granted, he doesn’t get these from a tragic past like any of the villains mentioned (or alluded to) in the video, but he checks all the other boxes for someone you could hold an interesting conversation with in which you discuss (and potentially alter) eachothers views. The main reason this isn’t an option is Orgalorg’s megalomania, rather than some cosmic role to play out.

No matter how hard Finn tried to build a relationship with him, Martin would never understand and respect Finn, much less treat him like family. No matter how much Finn tried to love him, he eventually realized that Martin was an unredeemable, toxic person and that chosen family can be much more important than blood ties.

You're also forgetting reboot She-ra erased Horde Prime, Hordak wasn't exactly redeemed. He's not a villain any more, but he's not redeemed. He did turn against Horde Prime, but he did it because he wanted to protect Entrapta. Not because it was the right thing to do. Though he also wasn't leading the Horde on Etheria because of some villainous plot, he wanted to prove his worth to Horde Prime. I think there’s a lot of kids shows now that show this type of character like someone who disagrees with the main character but doesn’t mean their redeemed with friendship like a simple version would be Tangled the series - rapunzel wants to be liked by everyone but the guy who likes everyone doesn’t like her and she tries to “persuade” him to like her but by the end of the episode they both realize that they just aren’t gonna like each other. It’s not because one is good and the other is evil but because their people that disagree in their views that doesn’t mean they hate each other but also doesn’t mean they like each other their neutral and I think that’s a good point to show rather than a villain and a hero they showed both characters as smart, nice, reasonable and good but their views aren’t all the same making for a MILD conflict that doesn’t need to be resolved it gives the message that “not everyone likes you it’s not because either of you did something it’s just how the world works” which is a GREAT message to give to kids that don’t deal with heroic ideals and it’s simple to understand but complex in thought Another one that gets a little deeper is she-ra - shadow weaver dies in the end but doesn’t mean she is redeemed because she still at the end of the day abused the children under her care she dies heroically to an outside perspective “protecting her children” but to me it was very obvious that she died not to gain forgiveness because she saw nothing wrong with her abusive nature her last line was “your welcome” not I’m sorry which is very true for her character she isn’t redeemed when she dies and catra and adora cries for her but doesn’t dwell to much on her passing showing they do care about her but they can’t fully understand her intentions (I think that shows through out the series for both of them trust her to an extent but knows she isn’t a great person overall) another one is catra cause she wanted to die to be redeemed but when she lives it’s obvious that it isn’t easy for her to say sorry instead shows it through her actions- which I think is a much better sorry but lots of people disagree- catra was willing to die for someone else and to be forgiven for her past actions but DEATH isn’t the answer to “become a hero” you need to act like one. (Like adora she maybe called the hero but her purpose as she-ra for the first ones was a colonizer (which idk if I have to state this ISN’T HEROIC AT ALL) not to save etheria but she CHOOSES to leave her life behind and make herself a hero) Another story is avatar aang doesn’t forgive ozai and no one does not even zuko cause he is a messed up person not only to his colony but to his children ,friend and sibling too no one “redeems” him heck by the end we don’t care about him he is just the villain defeated not the redeemed character (that spot goes to zuko OF COURSE) Our animated kids shows are getting better and better and I stan an industry that can evolve

sasamichan THIS. Kipo is good in it’s own right, but I dont see the nuance that everyone else see. It’s a story that has been told several times over, its just packaged differently and executed a hip way for a new, younger audience. I see no issue with this, it preps the groundwork and is told in a manner that is digestible for kids. But as an adult, I think to best execution these themes is when you really explore the darkness in people, because its in those moments where you have to wade through the horrors of the world, look past triggered emotional reactions, and really grapple with this idea of redemption. And Monster does this in a way that is deeply uncomfortable and complex, which to me, makes it much more impactful. There’s no colorful animation style, no soundtracks, no friendship songs, no lovable protagonist. It’s people being terrible. And awareness of backstory or not, its up to the viewer to decide on morality.

A lot of people are mentioning Avatar and how Azula and Ozai were not redeemed and that is a great point. I think another great thing avatar does though is that it teaches you that you do not need to forgive people who have wronged you. A lot of if not most kids shows always preach that everyone can be redeemed and forgiven but Avatar doesn't. Its realistic. Like when Katara confronted the man who murdered her mother. She said she would never forgive him, but that didn't stop her from moving on with her life. What is great about avatar is that it teaches you that not everyone can be redeemed or forgiven but that doesn't mean everyone can't move foward because of that. That is something everyone needs to know. I hate the narrative that bad people/people who hurt others can always be redeemed and forgiven because its not realistic. A murderer won't suddenly become nice because you're nice to them. I hate when kids shows romaticize that idea because that is dangerous. Avatar shows that some people like Zuko and Iroh who have done horrible things are not always horrible people, but it also shows that people who have done horrible things like Azula and Ozai are horrible people. Not all people who do horrible things are horrible people, but horrible people who do horrible things are horrible.

I’m really glad you pointed this out. A lot of shows now will do what Steven Universe does to an extent- be able to get through to the antagonist through words and reasoning. On the other side of the spectrum, you see some action cartoons use fighting to win over the character, and once the antagonist is beat they then side with the protagonist (this is seen in a lot of shounen anime at least). I like how Kipo creates a sort of combination of the two, where though she initially wants to change Scarlamagnes mind through reasoning and love, she finds herself in a situation where she has to fight in order to save the people she loves. I also like that Scarlamagne doesn’t get redeemed at the end of this season. I think there is a chance he will be redeemed, especially after his remark on Kipo putting the mutes first, but I’m glad they’re giving his character time to maybe reflect on his decisions rather than him being fine with just tagging along with the group after fighting them five minutes ago.

This guy: "This is the first show that shows that some people are beyond redemption." Me (an intellectual): What about Azula she had a way more tragic backstory with layers deep enough it took Hellofutureme a good 45 minutes to analyse and deconstruct, she had no redemption. she was way beyond that. They all got a chance at redemption and only Zuko took it, even Ozai got a chance at redemption only to attack and scold Aang. The problem with clickbait BS like "somthing this did what "insert" or any other thing for that matter didn't." is that you're bound to be proven wrong.

It’s actually the Cell saga, android 16 imparts to Gohan that while not wanting to fight because you don’t like fighting is admirable...Those like cell cannot be reached or swayed by words alone, and that they will go on hurting people if you don’t stand up against them.

The problem I had with Steven Universe was the redemption of the diamonds. They did some truly horrible things and still we redeemed. I’m kinda annoyed about that. We can sympathize with Scarlamagne but he isn’t redeemed. Kipo tries. She wanted to believe in him. And in the end he didn’t have much of a redemption. And as terrible as what happened to him is, he did some terrible things.

@@sparxstreak02 yeah, this; if you're going to do a redemption, it shouldn't be something like "oh and the only way he can redeem himself is by dying" like it's both a copout and a kind of shitty message, both on "the only way you can become better is through sacrificing yourself" angle and the "by dying he doesn't ever need to actually face the consequences of his actions" angle

This make me think about John Silver in the movie Treasure Planet. He teaches Jim some important things and becomes a father figure to him, but when Jim finally found his place and knows who exactly he is, Silver decides to take his own path. Silver could be with Jim and have a life with him, but he decides to let him go. Jim has grown, Jim already knows the lessons that Silver could teach him, so Silver now doesn't fit in Jim's life. It's time for these two characters to take their own paths, even if they're not connected.

I think the "winning villains over with their heart" thing is a bit of an overcorrection from past shows where they always had to beat up the bad guy and there was no moral ambiguity.
