How JNCO Jeans Made Absurd Fashion History
JNCO jeans (JNCOs, if you're nasty) epitomized a brief, strange moment in fashion history. They were "countercultural" jeans marketed towards suburban tweens. JNCOs made adults angry, but what might be odder is that they made so many young people happy.
Erin dives into the history of JNCO jeans, from their iconic logo to their fall from wide-legged grace. She hits on the comfortability of JNCOs, the different meanings ascribed to the acronym (?) JNCO, and attempts to fit an entire JNCO leg over her head (OK, not that last one ... though she did request that we make that a part of the video).

Man, takes me back. My middle school instituted a dress code stating we couldn't have "more than 3 inches of excess leg room" because of JNCOs. I used to be able to carry textbooks in my back pocket

I remember my parents wouldn't buy me them. But I DID have baggy cargo shorts. So what I'd do is stand in front of a mirror in the bathroom, then pull them down to my knees so the bottom of the shorts completely covered my skate shoes. I still remember how cool I felt. Until I had to pull my shorts back up and leave the bathroom.
For anyone curious, JNCO jeans are still around...

I had a few pairs of wide-legged Jncos and one downside that wasn't mentioned is the way they would stir up dirt and sand from the road. Some summer days, I would take off my pants and be able to see a layer of dirt and sand all up my legs to my knees!

In 2000 I was a skater/goth in high school and the only girl in my school to wear them. There were only like 10 kids total that wore them at all. It wasn’t very popular in Chicago inner city schools.
it was also a popular brand because you could fit a ton of stollen stuff in the pockets, and about 8 cans of spray paint
I used to love my JNCOs. They were super comfortable. They fit over my skates and kept me from ripping up my knees when I fell. I still remember them fondly 🙂

You missed some of the appeal to this style of Jean. In the 90s we had to buy pants 2-5 sizes too big to get a sag going. This left the pants below the butt and held on by a belt and a prayer and constantly being adjusted. When this style came along the pant could be worn at the waist comfortably but the feeling in the legs was about the same as with sagged pants and the pocket placement was the same as sagged pants. It was incredibly comfortable! Though, heaven help you if it rained and all that denim got wet. Cuff them. Pin them. Hit a rave for 12 hours. The Jean cargo style naturally gave way to the khaki cargo style. The draw string was practical in theory. It let you have the large leg and cinch down to not pass around the shoe (though, personally, I never really tightened mine and I found the draw string itself was always in the way). All of the jeans I had were of this style from about 1997 when I first found a niche shop that carried them to about 2002 or so and it became hard to find them. Once you had them, you didn’t really need to buy more and more just because more were out. I mean, that’s not how anyone I knew bought clothes. I transitioned away from them when what I had wore out and I couldn’t get replacements. I would have kept buying them if they were available. The skinny jeans of the 2010’s were disgusting and most modern pants are just too narrow for my preferences. I’m not going to go back to buying extra large clothing, but I do prefer a very relaxed fit.

I unironically miss Jnco jeans and would still wear them if I could, but I suspect the reason why I liked them was for decidedly anti-trendy reasons... to me, they were just a pair of incredibly comfortable pants with big pockets.

There’s been a noticeable improvement in content I’ve been really enjoying all the recent videos and learning a lot. You’re doing really good I really think that once more folks give your videos another chance they’ll tune back in. In the meantime I’m trying to do my part in liking and commenting and rating your videos whenever KZread asks me about it(which has happened twice now so hopefully that means that KZread’s algorithm’s is reevaluating something) You are doing really good and your super fun to watch and seeing you break for a second was really fun. I don’t want to come in and say be positive or anything but I do think that the more you can do to psyche yourself up the more it’ll come off in your delivery and jazz. People still try to buy mine, right off my arse, every time I wear them out to the club...not that I can go out anymore. I also have a home-made pair, that a friend cobbled together out of 3-4 pair or vintage Levis, with patchwork from a kimono for flair.
I used to love these jeans for extreme rollerblading between clubs in downtown Orlando during the late 90's...

Break Stuff is the best Limp Bizkit song hands down. I wasn't allowed to wear jncos but I stole my stepbrother's pair once and wore them to school and it was the best day of my life. I had never felt cooler and haven't felt as cool ever since.

Honestly, they looked pretty ridiculous in the 90s too, and we still wore them. I once saw a schoolmate trip on his Jncos while going down the stairs at school he flew through the air and his butt popped out. Right in front of a bunch of girls. I guess there was a price to pay to look so cool 😂
I recall in the 60s in San Francisco, when some trendy guys wore Elephant Bells. Standing still, they looked like regular bell bottom pants. But when you moved, the extreme pleats would flare out and become huge.
fun fact, JNCO really stood for Jeans Compnany.... because they sold jeans

I think it was JC Penny. I remember looking at their ads in the Sunday paper and telling my family that I wanted a pair. I never did get them back then.
I didn't wear JNCOs as a kid because they were expensive compared to the off-brand baggies that were becoming increasingly available. But I have purchased a few pairs (mainly shorts) since their relaunch. As a dad, I'm quite unconcerned with looking cool and appreciate the comfort and utility of loose fitting shorts with deep pockets.
Break Stuff is by far the best LB song. Always gets cranked when it pops up.
I remember my old Kik 69s... Those were interesting jeans.
I got a pair on right now
Jnco was only cool in skateboarding with kids. I would know i desperately wanted a pair when i started skating at 10. Turns out actually seeing your feet is better for skateboarding. Subsequently skateboarders were trend setters once again going the opposite way with slim fitting jeans, and more specifically stretch denim for men. Skate jeans had that in 06'. Skateboarding doesnt get the credit it deserves in fasion
jnco shorts are where its at! as baggy shorts are still very much in and prolly will be forever.
Man do you know how much weed and ish you could carry in them jeans. Shout out to my late 30s early 40s people who love JNCO. The 90s was awesome! Man I miss the 90s
