How It Works: Hagrid's Motorbike Adventure

Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure is a multi launch coaster located at Universal's Islands of Adventure that opened June 13th, 2019. It replaced a pair of Bolliger & Mabillard dueling inverted coasters named Dueling Dragons. The ride costed a staggering $300M (likely inclusive of Dueling Dragons demo) and features a plethora of technology whilst straying from the norm of screen based rides. But how does Hagrid's magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure work? Let's find out!

More info about Hagrid's: -The preshow with Hagrid and Arthur Weasley actually has 2 projections; one on the transparent screen and another on the back wall for added depth -the vehicles do not keep track of which RFID tag is used to dispatch a vehicle. The platform is monitored by HD cameras and if an incident were to occur, those cameras would be used to determine who dispatched a vehicle. -The speed of the moving walkway and the vehicles in the station can be slowed to allow guests with limited mobility to board safely. This does not affect the rest of the ride unless the platform is kept at the slower speed for an extended period of time, at which point vehicles will back up to the final launch. -In addition to the bus bars in the station, there is also a short section on each drop track to charge the vehicles while they're parked there. -The blast ended skrewt and Hagrid figures were built by a company called Animax Designs. The unicorns were made by Life Formations -The drop tracks are hydraulic, not pneumatic, and do not need to actively home into position at the bottom of the drop. They are slowed at the bottom of their descent by induction currents between permanent magnets and copper plates on the track and its supports. There are pneumatic shock absorbers that slow the track down the last few feet, and when these shocks bottom out, the track is already lined up and ready to dispatch. -If a vehicle is approaching the end of its block and the next block is not clear yet, the vehicle will actually slow down to give the next block more time to clear. It will only stop if it gets to the very end of its current block and the next block still hasn't cleared yet. Source: I worked at Hagrid's during construction and opening

13:35 For those of you who are unfamiliar, a block zone is a section of ride that only one train may occupy. At the end of the block zone is a method to stop the train in case the block zone ahead is still occupied. This is the safety system that prevents roller coaster trains from colliding with one another.

Rode this ride several times while there in early March 2021. When we arrived in Devil's Snare and the train dropped, the ride shut down for about 30 seconds which freaked everyone out because we could hear a train moving close to the area we were in and we were all very hopeful that master control was operating like it should; and thankfully, it was! I got to ride it 3 times on the day I went due to a handicap pass. It was still slow with the pass but unbelievably worth it. Hands down the best ride I have ever ridden. I also felt like sections of the ride queue were worryingly claustrophobic. It would be difficult to get out during an emergency as the tunnel sections without emergency exits was long. The only other thing I didn't like was the sound in the preshow room being insanely loud. May gusts had their hands over their ears. After a long time in that room, it can get a bit redundant hearing the same preshow over and over. This was during the 3rd week after it opened so, I would like to say they were still working some stuff out. People were watching entire 2hr movies on their phones in the regular queue which is insane.

I hope to return to Universal Studios someday soon so I can experience this ride first hand. Block sections can be freaky. I've never been a huge coaster person since I'm never great with higher G-forces. But I tried the Mummy ride at Universal and was white-knuckling it most of the time. At the scene with the fire, we stayed there a rather long time, enough so that the scene completely reset for the next car. We could hear the screaming and track noise of the car behind us, and it sounded super close. I was in the back of the car, and I had that feeling of adrenaline so hard that your hearing is weaker and you feel lighter. We made it out, but for the next hour or so I was still crazy on edge

The MOST BRILLIANT addition these parks EVER made was to include ADDITIONAL forms of 'entertainment' for the customers while they wait in line! Just the simple inclusion of a few video monitors showing actors performing cheap skits related to the attraction can make the wait in line an enjoyable event itself ;)

The first time I rode this, I was with a group of people and we were celebrating my friend’s aunt who was visiting for her birthday. One of the people in our group had an assistance pass (like Disney’s DAS) and booked it for us, then after we rode it he decided we definitely needed to ride again and booked it a second time. While we were in line the second time, my friend’s aunt was chatting with some of the team members and generally charming the pants off of them, and they noticed her birthday button and said we could ride twice if we wanted. So we got off the second time and were brought back around to ride a third time. Basically, I went from never having ridden this ride to riding it three times in one day. And it has the potential to be very different each time depending on where you sit (front or back, bike or sidecar). It was so fun. I get why it pulls such insane wait times!

I remember watching this video after doing the ride for the first time last year and being blown away, and I've just come back to watch this after doing the ride a year later, after feeling disappointed in Universal for not keeping everything working that makes this ride so unique and amazing. It's so frustrating and makes me sad for people who haven't had chance to experience it in the full glory! I've been doing it on and off for the past few weeks, and not once has the Skrewt farted smoke for example. Surely it can't be that hard to fix this! Really annoys me that people don't care for the finer details. It should be kept to be at the standard the original creators intended. It's a slippery slope if you start to let these details go (as shown on other, older Universal rides!)
