I have to agree with most of this. The "tune up" is a scam. Horses don't forget even after years. Maybe the human needs a "tune up". Horses have great memories and never forget what they are taught if they are taught right. You attribute that to the problems people have after months off. I attribute that to the humans. Horses are seldom the real problem.

I've always told people if you can't give the horse time off without having 'issues' then he didn't really understand the work, wasn't really 'trained'

After a year of not riding my now 4 year old mare (due to her being boarded far away) she has not forgotten anything. We were able to pick up right where we left off. I don’t know if it was our training or her breeding or a combination of both. She is such a good little horse. Same with our other horses. My saddlebred who was not trained by me was a little excited but that was about it. My little mustang (trained by my husband) was perfect also. It’s definitely important to spend as much time with them as possible but I need them to be flexible too.

That horse is a hoot.

Good lessons that are learned most often improve with time off. That young one has quite tge personality! Will be fun to watch his training!!

I agree if the horse knew it before they know it months or even years later. I've never had a problem coming back to what my horse knew months or years later... COVID really showed what was still a work in progress and what was known. It's ok to still be learning as the human as long as you are willing to learn. There are SO many things I would do differently with a new horse or if my boy and I could go back I time. However in discovering this with him I have learned a lot through him that I would have missed if I had gone another way. And we are resetting right now checking what we know and what we don't plus trying to do better and fill in our holes.

The same as I put him up months prior. I do use positive reinforcement and have been teaching him to fetch!

He was saying the itchy little guy would start backing up for a scratch all the time if he scratched his butt, and there comes an age where you don't want a big adult horses butt in your face all the time

He says in the video. The horse is ok just standing there sharing space with Warwick leaning on his hindquarters. But, the horse loves getting scratched, and will likely become very enthusiastic about doing any behavior that resulted in scratching. Since he doesn't want the horse to come running butt-first at people hoping for a scratch, he's careful to not build the association between standing butt-facing-towards-person and getting scratched. I'm sure he scratches the horse other times, that's presumably how he knows the horse likes it after all!

He’s absolutely right not to scratch him, I have a mini who I took on, who will try to push you over for bum scratches, if you’re sat down anywhere nearby, he would reverse until he was sitting in your lap, it was bad enough with him being small, can you imagine a larger horse doing that. He’s much better if we ignore him and get him to refocus on something else.

Well, I have learned something new! I got an old mare out of the kill pen that used to be an Amish buggy horse. She always turns her butt to me for a scratch - and I have always scratched her!! She also does this to visitors. However, she has never pushed into me or anyone else. She just stands there and waits. 😂 I guess going forward I will ignore her.

Aren’t you afraid of him getting excited and kicking you ?
