How is Splatoon's SQUID singing created?

Ойындар

In Splatoon, the Inkling (and Octoling) idol groups have a really distinctive, squid-like sound to their singing! But how was that Squid sound created? In this video, I'll show how Nintendo created this unique, squid-like style of singing in Splatoon!

Funfact: inkling and octoling are considered different languages in the splatoon universe, and i believe inkling is usually written in kanji while octoling was in katakana (two different japanese "alphabets") i'm not too knowledgeable but something like that! I've been working on a Splatoon inspired album myself this year, and my approach to squidifying vocals were mainly a low pass & high pass filter, a rapidly automated sweeping EQ, tons of compression, a touch of ring modulation and some slight bitcrush, and a little more. Lots of fun experimenting with these kinds of sounds, there's probably dozens of approaches to achieve similar results! =D

I would recommend trying out pitch shifting the formants in your voice. Keep the same fundamental frequency but change the placement of the harmonics. It helps to give it a more fun character and will allow you to do different voices. One good technique for squid voices is to pitch it up to get a bit of chipmunk. Another thing you can do is shift up with one formant algorithm and then shift it back down with a different one. Just be sure to use a plug-in that is only touching the harmonics while preserving the time parameters of the file. Most DAWs have a tool for that.

I feel like mentioning that the majority of vocaloids are NOT fully synthesized, they take sounds from singing from recordings of the voice actors which can then be rearranged, like a digital piano, the end product ends up sounding robotic but it’s still using recordings from real humans. I get the point you were making however

I actually did this to voice Futaba when me and the lads were playing through Persona 5 and my throat somehow survived. Another cool thing is that the Inklings and Octoling have different voices, likely because of the accents required for Octarian language! I've seen others comment on scruffy's squid voices video that trying to "undo" the squidification process would be impossible using only the processed audio files. It'd be like trying to piece together a complicatied equation when you only have the answer. But, I'm not an audio engineer, hobby or otherwise so 🤷‍♀️

Good job uncovering how the voices of the inklings and octolings were made. When I listened to the soundtrack of Splatoon, I truly loved the vocals of some of the songs. So much that I felt like singing what felt like cephalopod gibberish, and enjoyed doing so. Given Shiho Fuji's strategy of wanting songs like these to get hooked onto people's minds, all things considered, I'd say it actually worked! Thanks to you, Tom, I got to know how the undulating tones of the voices (which is perhaps the part of the vocals that got me hooked in the first place) through the use of a pass-noise filter that changes back and forth rapidly, making human voices sound like they're underwater. And it felt surreal to see all this gibberish written down to read. I can just hear what the songs sound like by reading them. I'd say that all the work done by the singers/voice actors was brilliant, but we mustn't forget Yuki Tsuji, Splatoon's sound designer who provided the voice of all the playable common inklings and octolings. Also, fun fact: the devs at nintendo also used this strategy of undulating tones in a previous game; you might not have even realized it. And that game is the Zelda title Majora's Mask on the N64. In this game, protagonist Link can use masks to transform into various creatures-- one of them being the Zora. This is where undulating tones are actually used-- Zora Link's yells are just regular Link's yells, but edited to sound underwater. Given what you said about how the main cast of Splatoon's voices were made, it is most likely that nintendo used this same trick for Zora Link in Majora's MASK.

Very interesting video. I'm a big fan of the music in Splatoon, in fact I think it's actually one of the core elements of what makes the series so likable. A lot of stuff here I didn't know about. It's clear the composers of the game put a lot of thought and hard work into creating the unique world of music in these games. I wish more games had contextual music like this. Especially the final boss fights where you can actually see the idols performing the music in the background. Can't wait until Splatoon 3 (in one day as of this comment).
