Something else needed is a foam elevation "triangle" that goes on your bed...you rest your leg on the foam triangle so that your operative knee is above your head at a 45 degree angle...having one's leg on the recliner footrest may be restful during the day, but does not elevate the operated leg high enough to have the excess fluid buildup around the knee joint to move up and out of the surgical site. Some people are able to sleep in their bed with one leg on the elevation device; many use it during the day and then rest/sleep at night in the bed as directed by their surgeon. Hope this helps future viewers...

I had my left knee replaced 13 days ago. I enjoyed watching your video. I didn't start PT until 7dpo. I was at 63 degrees flexion and -3degrees extension at my evaluation visit (June 6). Yesterday, I was at 89% flexion and still working on extension. I have to keep reminding myself that my recovery is unique to me...all that matters is my trajectory. Bless you!

No pain no gain. I'm one week out and agree with everything you just said. The ice machine is my savior both at night and during the day. Also moving my leg helps too. I also wear my knee high compression socks for 12 hours during the day. They have me take them off at night. They also like me to get up and walk around with my walker every hour during the day. At night I get up every 3 to 4 hours and walk, along with taking my pain medication. I also pump/flex my ankles every to our. Also, keep your leg elevated.

I'm so glad I found your video today is April 9th I had my surgery April 5th the day after in the evening my leg swelled up so bad I've been icing it and trying to raise it above my heart and doing the small exercises I was sent home to do till I start physiotherapy. The swelling is so much more painful than I thought it would be. I could show them I could walk with my walker when I left the hospital but after the swelling started I could barely walk on it to the bathroom and back it is so painful I'm so glad that I could hear your story that I don't feel so alone. Knowing that it will get better and that it's normal makes me have hope❤😊

Hello! I had knee replacement on May 7th. I am 77 and had my other knee done almost 21 years ago..I can say there has been a lot of improvements in the last 21 years. Last time I was in the hospital about a week, this time I came home the next day. Last time I was back at work in 6 weeks doing my job, which I was on my feet almost the whole time, but I only worked 4 hours a day. It went fine. This time it's little slower, but going well. I had surgery on a Tuesday and had my first PT on that same week on Friday, at the facility, not home. I am still using a walker, but I hope to graduate to a cane in a day or two. I hope your continued recovery goes well.

I’m 8th post TKR. Pain has been pretty bad but regular codeine and oramorph as/when required has controlled the pain. My leg is hardly swollen at all and not discoloured. I am using ice every hour for 20 minutes. Top tip - write down the times you take your meds every day. It’s tough to remember when you’re in pain and feeling a bit spaced out!

Thank you for your video. Day # 7 post op left knee replacement. @ 90 degrees flexion. 2 to 3 degrees extension. What really helped me was consistent pre op exercises. Also as you said walking every hour along with flexing and extension exercises 3 to 4 times daily. Don’t forget pain meds. Hydration, nutrition and your bowels! Struggling with constipation today!

I’m day #8 post TKR right knee. Swelling is not bad at all, no signs of bruising yet. Constipation was really bad (7 days). Wow - 90° flexion is amazing at day 7 👏👏👏. I’m only about 30° but the pain this afternoon has been horrendous. Had to take oramorph for the first time in the last 48 hours. I can’t get up and down the 13 stairs at my house so mobility isn’t an issue but I’m worried about the poor flexion. I still can’t lift my operated leg without a strap.

I had the new robotic knee replacement surgery 24 days ago. My first four days were a breeze and I did all my therapy daily plus more. Then day 5 was a painful doozy and it swelled. Scared me. Then found out that it was normal. The nerve block wore off. I used the ice machine and elevation and it totally worked. I can already bend 122 degree angle. Yes there is some pain and it’s ok to take what the Doctor gives you. Be positive and determined and you will do fine. You have to do the exercises though. No since in having surgery if you don’t want it to be right again. My goal is to be 100% with in 8 months instead of over a year. 😊 Hope this helps you. P. S. Take your pain medicine 30 minutes before therapy and your first exercise’s of the day ❤

Thank you for the post, still looking for what more can be done.. The swelling is huge and stops the bending and the pain of it. To stop the pain at times I needed both a Narco and Iced. And to reduce the swelling it needs to rest above the heart! Then you can bend it some after rest , which makes it painful and swell, repeat, now for 7 days, ahhh. And repeat . Wish us all the best ❤

Physical therapist came out finally on 3 visit we were able to do heal slides with his help . He just kept telling me rest and get control of the pain first . My knee actually feels better after doing it 20 times . Going to try to work up to 4-5 times a day starting today. He pushed my in person physical therapy back a week . I see little micro improvements. I was told by week 3 you turn a big corner so looking forward to that . Not to much swelling so thankful for that. How are you doing now?

Yes this has been a real test for sure. My ROM at this point is about 113, but that is after 2 full months of work. Dr. Said dont worry after xrays he said my problem is not scarring, but more swelling and it will come but I just dont know. Like you I am trying so hard, but think this may be all I get so I need to be thankful. I am sorry you are having such a hard time. Keep up the good work and I wish you lots of luck as well. Shoot. You were extremely lucky. The first two weeks were excruciatingly painful. And it’s by far not my first surgery. It was terrible. I’m 2 months out now and while it’s better it’s been a bear. I would never start therapy the next time until after the pain subsides. Therapy is however extremely worthwhile even when you don’t feel like going. I have an ice machine that the hospital gave me and the dr said a recliner was an absolute no. God Bless - glad you are doing well

I think the biggest thing that helped me with the pain were the Iovera Injections I did the week before surgery. I also had a nerve block and a spinal, but they wore off quickly. I thought the injections really helped for several weeks after surgery. glad you are doing better, hope you continue to improve!!!!

At 3:00pm CT. I watched your video. I am scheduled for Total Knee Replacement surgery on July 9th 2024. I fell & broke my knee & tibia in 2000 & I had to have a plate & lots of pins in my left leg to hold everything together at that time. Now my knee is rubbing bone to bone along with arthritis now showing too. My main concern is the pain. I know that I have a low pain tolerance & I truly am scared to death. I will be 75 thirteen days after surgery. My twin sister thinks that I am going to be just fine to celebrate 3/4’s a century old 10 days after my surgery. She says, she has talked to people & watched videos of Total Knee Replacement & people who have had total knee replacement & at 10 days there isn’t much if any pain. OMG, that would be wonderful but, I just can’t imagine that. I also am worried that after a week Tylenol is the only pain medication I will need which is what my sister is telling me from the videos she’s watched. That would be nice but, for me when I take Tylenol for a serious headache Tylenol doesn’t touch it. This is Post-op after major surgery. I know everyone has a different pain tolerance. I wish there was a graft which showed 1000 people’s pain after 10 days. from 0 to 10 with 0 being no pain & 10 being the worst pain. I then, would be able to figure out the average pain at 10 days & where I might be. I truly believe that those who haven’t been through it have no idea of what it’s really like. I also believe that the longer it’s been since you had this surgery you probably have forgotten the true facts. I am looking forward to this being done & over with because, right now I am super stressed. I did have a reverse shoulder replacement & it too was painful but, I didn’t have to walk on it either.

yes this surgery is for sure daunting, and I would be lying if I said it wasnt painful. It is painful, but in my case they gave me oxycontin to help with the pain when it was really bad. I dont know about celebrating 10 days after surgery. I actually went to Disneyland about a month after and even with a scooter it was too much. Just take it easy and do lots of icing. That really helped me alot. Take care and I pray all goes well and you recover very soon.

I have had three different sets of knee replacements on each leg with each doctor saying the last doctor measured wrong. This has transpired in fourteen years. I was thirty-eight when the first surgery and for nine years it was pure hell with the buckling of the knee at any given time. The second set of total knee replacements was in 2019 so those did not last long with the new doctor telling me the last doctor measured wrong so here we go again with the third set in November of 2023 and six months later the other leg which I am recovering from right now which was replaced in June of 2024. I am not doing this again I have done it so many times my range comes back on its own without therapy and my legs were naturally strong so I didn't even do therapy because all they came to do was milk the insurance company. I never used a walker or a cane I just muscled through it. I know time is the only healer for me at this point. I am only fifty-two I am not trying to do this again ever after six times.

They kick you out in 12 hours, and there’s no way to manage the pain of the first few days at home on P..O. Oxycodone and an NSAID. A few years ago they gave you three to five days in the hospital with IV narcotics, PCA narcotics, epidural pain management and continuous nerve blocks. This. same-day total knee replacement is a crime, I guess they don’t hear the screams and the insurance companies are happy.😢

I had a total knee replacement three weeks ago. The first two weeks were definitely the hardest. I came home same day of surgery and started physical therapy at home via an app the next day. I feel like my mobility and range of motion is pretty good now and pain diminished significantly after two weeks. I’m still on 800 mg ibuprofen, Tylenol and a nerve medication. I’m using a cane now for stability. I’m hoping this is like childbirth and you quickly forget the pain before you have the next child (knee replacement)!

After dealing with several doctors over a period of a year i found out I had severe arthritis as my patella had moved forward from the injury. I was using a walker as the pain was unbearable and when i met with the surgeon 10/23 he measured my flexion at just about 90 so i was having trouble with everything at that point. It was a good decision for me i feel like i am getting my old life back

I have severe osteoarthritis in my knees and back. The last year I’ve gone from walking painfully on my own to using crutches, then a cane, and now a rollator walker. I have bone on bone in both my back and my left knee. I’ve done just about everything to avoid surgery. I’ve had physical therapy, steroid injections, gel injections, an ablation, not to mention pain meds. I’m afraid of surgery/rehab. I’m worried that my back will not allow me to do rehab. I don’t want to go through more pain. I can only sleep for more than 2-3 hrs at a time. I am in bed most of the time now. Is the surgery really worth it?
