How Indians Handle Millions Of Tons Of Temple Offerings | World Wide Waste

Worshippers in India buy thousands of tons of flowers every day to give as offerings in temples. The rituals leave behind mountains of flower waste that often end up contaminating already troubled rivers with pesticides and harmful chemicals. One business is taking that waste and turning it into products like natural dyes used in garments that have been sold by Anthropologie; others are making fragrances and incense sticks.

The incense is readily available, but the clothing has been adopted by Western up-market sellers, which is a shame as it limits the number of potential buyers. Edit: the flowers are important to the economy as large numbers of people would, otherwise, be jobless.

Coming from a perspective from growing up in religion, reusing and recycling these offerings seems more respectful to the planet that the gods watch over. Why pollute the nature that the gods carefully created? These people are caring about nature and, in the process, are respecting the gifts given to them by the gods. And the way they're reusing the flowers and everything really feels so much better from a god's point of view than just throwing it in the river. I mean, the flowers into incense? That's perfect and still goes to the gods. I love it.

@vander9678 Good clothing used to be in that price range. Sweatshops and fast fashion have ruined our world's appreciation for well-made garments. It takes money to pay for the time and effort contributed by artisans, as well as better supplies for them to work with. For example, a $35 Wal-Mart purse worn daily would fall apart in as little as a few months. A $300 Coach purse will last at least a decade, and has a lifetime repair warranty. The price may seem steep to us, but over time, it actually costs MORE money to buy the cheap and easy stuff instead.

It's the lack of knowledge. Ganga has the fastest cleaning rate and has medicinal qualities to it's water. The water from Ganga river can remain clean for decades if you put it in a bottle. So all these qualities has led to it gaining the title of holy river. But there is a limit to how much a river can self clean. For thousands of years there was only limited pollution so Ganga was able to clean itself. In 2018, Clean Ganga movement was started since then Ganga has become clean again. It's so insane. The Harappan people who created Indian as a culture had sewers, baths, and plumbing four thousand years ago. They based their society on cleanliness and are known for having well-built thoughtfully planned out cities and homes. Their urban planning was literally thousands of years ahead of most of the world. They were already trading goods that would make it to what would be Europe eventually. And now this is what India has become. The most overpopulated and polluted country in the world. The top three most polluted countries are India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Which were all one country until the British decided to destroy a country out of spite.

This is what Colonialism and "Industrialization" have done. Destroyed native industries and skills in order to introduce machines to extract work from people like it's a resource. India and China used to produce high quality fabric at the cheapest prices as their default exports. Now we have the cheapest fabrics made for synthetic trash at low to high prices with higher quality fabrics being exclusive to the wealthy. Is it really such a bad thing if China and India are working together to regain their lost status? America seems to think so. But then again, America and Britain have shoehorned us into capitalism where we can no longer survive without being slaves to an exploitative organization and work 9-5 while they also attempt to control their brand image through you by censoring every aspect of your life and what you can post, wear or say.

Not just funerals. On wesak day, at the temple I used to go to, people use and reuse the flowers. They're collected by temple staff from the altars and placed back on the flower tables. You don't actually purchase the flowers, just give what you can into the donation box. It's a balanced cycle and helps reduce waste. Even food offerings are collected and distributed among the homeless. It's considered a kind of blessing to eat food that's been offered to Buddha.

(Money is also energy). Some people have blood money. And use these rituals to gain some good credit to their soul's account. You may not understand energies, so I'll leave it at that. I can go on and on 😊 Buddha was a Hindu. So theirs will be similar to us, with their unique distinction. Buddha doesn't believe in god, but we do. Hence you cannot compare us. If you respect Buddhism kindly stick to it. This is the Hindu practice for eons. We fared fine till now. If you still wish to show concern for pollution, do so at the notorious industrial effluents which started to suffocate our rivers in the past few decades (before which the rivers were fine) . One positive aspect of all the flowers is there is a slow rise in native flowers being sold and attracting more bees (solitary and hive) to pollinate in front of the store directly. @@iitn8437 you're not wrong about the higher concentration. But you can't ignore the irony of deeming a river holy while polluting it to high hell. And you can't just blame the government. The people use the river as a dump.

Other countries have adapted their customs and traditions to better fit the environment. Why India isn't adapting/changing to today's world needs? Maybe lack of education? Great video!

By other countries you mean the developed West, which already contributed enough to global pollution with rampant usage of vehicles and technology?? Indians have just started to prosper. With a population likely 10x your country, whatever that might be. Next time why don't you try understand the ground realities instead of jumping to conclusions that make you feel superior? 😊

@@blobofconsciousness Lack of education and Awareness is a Ground reality. I am sure if People of India are Explained about these hazardous effects and how to avoid them, they will surely Understand it. West during their Growth phase made mistakes too but with awareness and Education people's mindset became more Environment friendly.

@@squidikka none of them have our population. It is easy to squarely blame "lack of development" without deep diving into the factors that cause. If by other countries you mean south east asian ones...look at them! They are culturally homogenous. Almost all countries in the world are culturally, ethnically homogenous. Being homogenous means the values of the people are similar. It facilitates easy implementation of rules and its following. India since forever has a unique population which speak different languages. Thanks to other political factors and other separations. This country had to develop both its urban and rural populations. By the time we were crawling industrialization wanted us to run. Some states in india are more developed, others not so much. Hence it is difficult to maintain a standard, when the "standard" itself is flexible.

Can you also please crack down and show where huge quantities of edibles like milk, rice, fruits, coconuts, various condiments, etc. end up after getting used as offerings. The stuff in this video is just a fraction. There are tons of other stuff used by a bunch of religions in India, the names of which I cannot comment in public.

Nah they usually aren't wasted, as they are consumed by the devotees or taken by the priests or used in temple kitchens to cook prasad for the deity and later distributed amidst devotees. So food/articles aren't usually wasted😊
