How I Would Learn Engineering (If I Could Start Over)

If I were to start over, this is how I would relearn engineering…specifically engineering that involves hardware or mechanical work. There are two important aspects to consider here when learning engineering from scratch. First, there’s the material you need to know. Second, there’s a job-hunting strategy you can follow to actually help you get a high-paying engineering job…when you’re starting out with no experience. Timestamps are as follows:
00:00 Intro
00:20 The Engineering Flowchart
01:35 Job Hunting Strategy
03:38 MODS
05:19 Materials Science
06:58 Manufacturing Methods
08:31 Heat Transfer
09:51 GD&T
10:32 Analysis of Failure
12:09 CADing
12:36 Rapid Prototyping
12:59 Arduino & Breadboarding
13:18 Hand & Shop Tools

Got my internships revoked during college due to covid and now that I've graduated, most internships don't accept new grads nor do most entry level jobs without relevant experience. Definetely keep applying during undergrad so you don't get stuck in limbo like me. Edit: I did end up getting hired after about a year. I applied to many places within a 12 hour car ride away from where i was currently staying. Also kept working on personal projects, doing certs, practicing interviewing, etc. Unemployment being low definetely helped since less ppl looking for jobs and the cascade of higher level employees applying for lower level jobs seems to have slowed down or stopped. However, the ratio of positions being canceled was still relatively high (1/4jobs)

With Software Engineering becoming so poupular, the core engineering domains have kinda got sidelined nowadays and not that sought after by students, but I guess they are an integral part of our lives as much as Software Engg.

This is a good video; however I will be careful with the courses you suggested. I’m also a mechanical Eng., by trade and I have over 7 years of experience and I have never ever touched any of those subjects on my work. I’m a modeling and simulations Eng. so for me the most important subjects are computer science, calculus, linear algebra, PDE’s, numerical methods, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, controls. Courses you didn’t mentioned. The beauty of mechanical Eng. Is that you can work in any field; hence I don’t think that making a video only focusing on design provides a good example. I wouldn’t be surprised if most mechE work on fields other than design. Cheers

They tend to ask general questions specific to the major you are in. Electrical and chemical engineers will have very different questions

Please be aware that startups are not for everyone. Larger companies have a range of roles, there is a lot of opportunity to move around and find your niche. Startups typically have poor work life balance. As with everything else, it depends on you and what you want.

Just started my undergrad in Computer Engineering at the University of Guelph and I'm already behind. Do you think I should be understanding concepts while in the lecture because I usually learn it after. I think I'm spending too much time on note taking. Do you recommend taking fewer notes and moving on to the homework so that I can move past topics quicker while also learning them effectively? Also, I know you said marks do not really matter, but if I plan on getting my masters(maybe in the states), do I need higher marks than a 70 average?

Bro- Computer Engineering do not study these. He's talking about Mechanical engineering. I am almost graduating in my CpE degree and what you should be learning is not in this video. Learn about electronics, programming Python and C++, Networking (CCNA), and control systems.

Generally aim for a 3.0 GPA (B average or 80%) and above for graduate school and getting jobs at the bigger companies straight out of college

Just a little note about internships. Know that the internship culture is different among different countries. For example, I am studying aerospace engineering and where I live I was able to land an internship in a medium sized company who does various European projects in my first year

@@TamerShaheen I was not trying to dismiss your point. I'm sorry if it came out that way. But I just wanted to make it clear for some people that are foreigners. I did this because they might be dismissing some companies that would look better on their CV because they are in the begging of their studies.

I have a question for you Tamer, I currently have been working in Engineering for the past 16 years and have a AA degree in Mechanical Engineering. I currently am a Design Electrical Engineer for the past 11 of my 16 years experience, I want to go back into Mechanical Engineering, though, and have 5 years experience doing that. I am looking to get my full BA in Mechanical but will take me 4-5 years to do so. I struggle with finding the Mechanical Engineer position I want because of my lack of my BA but I have lots of experience in the engineering industry. What is your suggestion to get hired by some of these companies?

To be honest, most companies are looking for your experience and electrical engineering can work inversely with mechanical engineering for many job positions. Simply reach out to them because a lot of the time, even the employers don't know what they are looking for. By the way why do you want to get back into Mechanical Engineering when you have a seemingly strong amount of experience in Electrical?
