How I WON the first kayak tournament of the season! Florida Kayak Bass Trail

I went into this kayak bass tournament with a lot of confidence because I found some really good areas during prefishing. Everything changed on me though. The wind during the week blew the grass around and I lost some water which made the fishing a little different than I was set up for. I made the necessary changes on the fly and got back in the grove on how the fish were set up. A good way to start the Florida Kayak Bass Trail!

That's what makes Headwaters so tough to fish now, the look changes every day.

They wouldn't sniff top water. I made like 5 casts and decided that was enough.

I fish headwaters 3-5 days a week… topwater this year has been the slowest since the impoundment was made. If you know where the clean water is and read the bite conditions of the day you can still catch more than 50 fish in a day but it’s definitely a struggle!

Congrats on the win. It's crazy how much that place has changed in a couple years. Used to easily catch 50-100 fish a trip with multiple 5+ pounders now ita a struggle to catch 10 fish a trip and any over 3 pounds unless using live bait. The pressure and poor lake management by whoever is supposed to do the management there has completely changed that lake. The hydrilla is beyond out of control and consumes half of the fishable water. Maybe not to bad for you guys with kayaks and mud motors but regular outboards are now a nightmare.

Thank you! I agree. It’s changed A LOT. I can only imagine how it’s going to be after they put in that rumored RV resort.

Great video! We will be moving to the Melbourne area soon, and it seems like the Hobie drive does better in hydrilla than the prop drives. What kind of anchor system are you using on your lynx, and why a lynx over a pro-angler?

Thank you! The Hobie drive does do better in hydrilla than prop drives but it can still get hung up in the thick stuff. I use the power pole micro for anchoring. I went with the lynx in this tournament because it’s so much easier to get across the grass to get to my area. With how light and effortless the lynx is, it glides across the thick grass when I take out the drive. With the pro angler, I’d be struggling big time. Hope that answers your questions well!

@@ChrisMitchellFishing it sure does. Thank you. If there was one kayak you’d get to handle all the water you fish in Florida, what would it be?

Definitely the hobie pro angler for every situation. I like the pa14. More room and a tad bit faster.
