You can also learn to "read" your plants as you get to "know" them more. If you just keep experimenting (within reason, and allowing for the fact that plants don't give instant reactions to changes), and paying attention, you will find what works, even without a meter.

Nora my dear plant friend, I ❤ your guidance and knowledge that you share. I have been baby stepping into Leca for a year or so, and now I need more. Could you please recommend brand names to me? I prefer the brown irregular ball, the red rounds work but roots love cracks so if you can make a recommendation I would be grateful. Thank you again for opening my eyes to what can be possible in the plant world.

Love the start of your video 😂😂 Thanks Miss Nora, for your amazing video. There definitely should be a more consistent way of telling people where to put the plants 😒. Miss Nora, I'm just wondering if my calathea orbifolia is not looking like it's best it's in soil. Would you use the long method if it's been in soil for a year or straight to leca? Thank you always for your content.. 😊

Also remember, plant labels when you buy only tell you what they will tolerate, a snake plant for example can tolerarate low light, it will not however thrive in low light, so it depends on what you want. If you want huge leaves and fast growth then all plants need bright indirect light, if you are happy for the plant to stay the same as when you bought it just follow the label

Great advice, as always, Nora. My home gets almost no natural light, so I use grow lights everywhere I have plants. Do you have any go to grow lights you use? (I already know about Mother, but they are outside of my budget).

Ive said it many times but the plant tags need rewritten esp for houseplants. Like instead of "bright Indirect light" they should put "as close to the window as possible without touching the glass! Indoor Full sun loved but acclimate over a few days!" Or "place me directly under a grow light! I'll be happy!" Or "while buying me buy a light meter! I need 800 FC to make you happy!" Changing the care tags would help to make growers actually be either a neutral impact on the environment or even an asset! Right now, the plant hobby is actually a negative on the environment bc of all the energy/water/transportation used to grow plants that will be repeatedly bought by the same people who then kill them and repurchase. As a plant parent, whose very much into caring for my plants and working for them to not die, i feel like my personal plant investments are less bad for the environment bc they have the chance and years to give back on oxygen and removing toxins etc but if i was buying a replacement every few weeks i know that i would be very much adding to the environmental grossness. If the tags were accurate this problem would be far less!

No truer words have been said. We really need to change the whole conversation about lighting indoor plants.

@@TheLecaQueen we really do! It wasn't until Daryl had created his lightmeter App for android that I realized how dead wrong I was about how well lit spaces were!! Don't get me wrong. I never needed to use lights during the day, I could read, cook, clean, etc and rarely needed to turn on an extra light until the evening started, but his light meter app was like "girrrrrl AT THE WINDOW you barely have enough to keep these plants happy!!!" and that's when I started to buy Sansi bulbs! I didn't want my plants to die as soon as winter came and the light went from 14 hours of "meh" a day to 7 hours of "ultra meh" a day. I went with Sansi because of affordability and I have stuck with them because I get migraines and they are THE FIRST light bulb to not trigger my migraines. I do occasionally shut them off when my head is feeling sensitive just to prevent things, but they are not actually a CAUSE of the migraine. This was a big reason why in the first place I didn't use lights hardly ever!! Now I am sure my dark spots are brighter than what I thought my brightest spots were and that's all because of watching Daryl and how he pressed that home and then created the free app! Recently I bought an inexpensive light meter simply bc I don't know if checking lights with my phone can do damage to the light sensors over time, and while it is very inexpensive, it is sooo interesting to see how even moving a plant over a a few cm can be a big change in the light it is seeing!!! As you know, I am in Canada, winter is cold here (we already have snow in my area) I can't even keep plants on my window sills in winter because of how cool the glass gets. In fact, I am using the window as a spot for venus flytrap dormancy! LOL I fully understand WHY tags are written with such little care. They WANT to resell plants and be able to boost their prices and it's a decent business model, but SO MANY PEOPLE think they have a black thumb when in reality, they just have a house they don't realize isn't lit in a way for their plants to be fuelled! These nurseries and greenhouses etc would actually be able to cut their costs if more of their plants that go to market survived as they wouldn't need so many square feet to heat and water and humidity and buy sunshade for etc. They could and would still make their money because more people would enter this as a hobby and be successful all while nurseries use less space and become more eco-friendly! It would also allow for more space to create hybrids and try new method like TC! Hopefully we will see these changes soon!!!! Living, breathing things shouldn't be bad for the environment when they are necessary to the wellbeing of the planet!!!

I can't lie, I have never used an app, I have read about them and some reviews were not the best so I decided to get an actual light meter.
