I have problems with 'pitas' dropping dead weeks after weaning and this makes total sense; I'm going to try it ....now I just have to remember to do it in my lambing stupor. Also, it's probably just not in the video, but I've found when I'm trying to get a lamb on the nipple it really helps to rub their bum (like mom does). Thanks for sharing everything you do! Sheep farming is better when we share knowledge!

When we had sheep, we’d tickle the base of the tail of bottle lambs when teaching them to suckle on a bottle, it seems to encourage sucking. Your nursing ewes do the same on new lambs. I’m envious of your barn. Great vlogs

I know your system with lambs has changed a lot since this video but it gave me a different perspective & an idea. You should milk the mamas with only one lamb & plenty of milk to feed your multiples at first. You already bottle feed every lamb & this way you know every lamb is starting off with that important immunity from the natural colostrum. It shouldn’t take longer to use that hand pump on a few ewes than it does to mix up powdered colostrum for dozens of bottles. Even if it does longer, it’s peace of mind & I think it would really help with your survivability of multiples.

I take them off the machine when the youngest of the group is around 35-40 days old.

Good info as always! How many lambs do you allow on one nipple before you add a second one. Would it work better to delay adding the tail/nut rings on bottle lambs until 2 days after they’ve been on the machine. They may be more inclined to move around more and not concentrate on their discomfort thus looking for the tit more frequently. For those cold days you can get a thermostatically controlled electric water bucket since you have power right there at the machine. Think you’ll find the lambs will drink more water cuz it’s warm like their milk. Good to know you can wean them earlier than 60 days. That will save a lot of money on milk replacer for sure :)

I do that also... But try to see if they will go straight on it first... less nipple confusion.

You wean them at 30 days? I thought you were supposed to wean them at 60 to 90 days; 60 being the least time. As always, great information.

I wean the ones on the machine at 30 days... the lambs still on mom we wean closer to 60 days.

Sandi would you ever consider keeping a bottle lamb as a replacement ewe lamb for your flock? Or do you only ever sell those ones for meat? In other words do you consider lambs that became a bottle baby as a weak animal? just curious.
