How I Split Firewood without Back Pain
Ойын-сауық
There's one thing in life that I find myself gravitating to as I get older and that is equipment that makes my life easier. This Eastonmade Ultra is one such piece that saves my back and body from too much wear and tear by helping me split firewood in a comfortable and efficient position. Splitting firewood used to be a chore at times with my old wood splitter in which I had to spend a great deal more time hunched over the wood splitter due to it's lower height and slower cycle time. Factor in the lack of a 4 way wedge on my old hydraulic wood splitter and this new Eastonmade Ultra seems like a colossal leap forward. The truth is, it is! I'm having a great time out here today watching this splitter do it's thing as I try to keep it fed. That's turning out to be the hardest part about owning this wood splitter, keeping it fed. It splits rounds into firewood so fast that it has time to take a breathe while I regroup and wonder what just happened. I better round up some help around here to keep this machine fed as it's going to start to laugh at me if it keeps outworking me. Glad you're all along for the tour today, should be a good one .
For anyone who is interested....the IBC cage holds approximately 1/6th of a cord of firewood or if you were to cut the pieces 16" long that would make a single pile that is about 4 feet long by 4 feet high.

Turns out the IBC cage holds about 1/6 of a cord of firewood give or take. Here's the video I made a while back testing that out kzread.info/dash/bejne/rKxkm8Zscpy6e8Y.html

Do you loose stack mostly into the totes? I have found that stacking into them yields closer to 1/3 cord, sometimes a 1/4 if you have the smaller 250/275 gallon totes.

Hey Sandy! A great Saturday morning video for the morning coffee :). It’s always great stopping by and seeing what your up to! Great to see the Eastonmade Ultra back out in the woodyard, an good selection of wood that day! Good thinking with putting the 4 way wedge out of the way while you were using the single wedge. Nice to see the DK out giving a hand as well, and yes 💯 agree on the tire chains needing those right now! That pickaroon is definitely a back saver! Something about getting outside and enjoying the colder weather and splitting wood is definitely 💯 for sure! Thanks for taking us along Sandy! Take care and be well :). Cheers! Andrew from NB :)

The advantage to your system, over a conveyor- is that the splitter debris gets pushed off the end and onto the ground. NOT dumped in the totes with the wood. You'd need a cleaning system of some sort to get around that- even if that system is just you tossing pieces onto the conveyor, lol.

Hi Sandy, What about making a spot where the IBC tote is slightly lower than your splitter platform so you can just slide in the wood rather than throwing? like a loading dock you could also make a gap between the tote and put a foot or so of grate for debris to fall through?

I love my Ultra. It's been a huge game changer in my little firewood operation. It's so much faster than my old splitter and much more ergonomic. I bring rounds out of the woods in my bush burrro trailer and split them right out of there into my tractor bucket for stacking in the wood shed or stacked right into IBC totes. Do yourself a favour Sandy and sharpen your wedges. It only takes a couple of minutes and makes a noticeable difference. Dave

Nice splitter. That is a fast cycle time and I also like how the pull start is away from the rod end of the hydraulic cylinder. The closest I have come to seriously injuring my hands or possibly losing a finger was when my splitter ran out of gas while the auto return was still engaged in the control valve. I filled it with gas and pulled the pull start and it fired up and the wedge started returning right away. My hand was resting on the end of the tube because I had leaned over to start the engine and nearly pinched my fingers. Lucky there was several inches of clearance between the wedge and the end of the cylinder tube otherwise fingers would have surely been crushed. Anyhow another great video. Keep'em coming.

@@sawingwithsandy It didn't actually pinch my fingers, thankfully. I was fast enough to get my hand out of the way. Still when you are dealing with 25 ton hydraulics that is close enough for me. Anyhow great video. I have a little shed roof extension project that a friend is helping me with and then I can put the mill in under the roof and still have 24x30 of space for bundles of lumber and slab wood out of the weather. Going to put a solar panel on the roof and have a couple batteries with some lights and stuff. You have some great videos, keep up the good work.

Best splitter ever I've seen. If possible I would have the splitter lower than the wood supply and maybe some wide belting from the other side to a lower bin, which would keep the bin from contacting the splitter. You have areas with banks where that would work better than all flat area.

I know all about firewood and back pain! I tilt my splitter into the vertical position. When I can, when the terrain allows it, I roll a number of rounds within reach of the splitter with my feet, and either kneel or sit on a round and roll the rounds into the splitter. I have a 5x10' trailer hooked to my ATV and jockey the trailer into position next to the splitter on the other side of my rounds. No lifting other than tossing the split pieces onto the trailer parked as close to the splitter as I can get it.
